Obviously this doesn't apply to people trying to conceive or those going through te adoption process.

Infact....have a Biscuit

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 01/01/2012 18:12

yousankmybattleship - I really, really don't think non-parents are going into Sleep and Potty Training and pontificating on various methods and theories, so you can probably relax and unclench over any dud advice you're getting. Grin

I suspect that like most people with children who have better things to discuss for the vast bulk of their MN-time, they're just enjoying the bunfights in AIBU and the general chat. :)

Cinderfella · 01/01/2012 18:12

I am a nanny who works 24/6 yousank

I have spent the last 2 years living with a young child and in equal measure know how fantastic it is when they do something new and how much you love them but also get exasperated at having to say something for the nth time in so many minutes. Yes the child is not mine and I definitely don't rate on the scale next to his mother but.... when I spend 24hours a day 6 days a week with the child I feel like I can offer some guidance and advice and have a little understanding of how hard it can be to be a stay at home carer to a young child, who you are responsible for and can't just leave at 5pm.

OneHandWavingFree · 01/01/2012 18:20

OP is NBU to ask the question, when the tagline is "By Parents For Parents."

MNHQ is possibly BU to keep a tagline that so explicitly excludes non-parents, though, for all the reasons outlined above.

OP is being treated harshly and unfairly in my opinion. All she actually did is ask a question. How exactly does "I don't understand why people without kids want to be on Mumsnet" become, in the minds of the enthusiastically aggrieved, "People who aren't parents should not be allowed access to children" or "People with children are superior to people who don't have children"?

Confused

I don't have children, nor am likely to (shrivelling hag emoticon). I come here for a chat; written in English not bleeding txtspk, and the excellent quality of swearing

I can't see what business it is of anybody's why anyone comes here. Anyone explain that one to me?

999HELPMYPUDDINGSONFIRE · 01/01/2012 18:22

Wow, calm down.
Was just a question, not an opinion!
I wondered as its called "mums net" for parents by parents.
Therefore, I'm unsure how someone without children/wanting to conceive etc would come accross the site and want to join.

One hand : thanks :-)
Seen people just want a row

OP posts:
SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 18:24

Actually, it wasn't a question. Trills will be along to deal with that.Wink

Are you still unsure? Have you read ^^^^^?

lenfercest · 01/01/2012 18:24

They like swearing.

yellowraincoat · 01/01/2012 18:29

I don't have kids and I never intend to have any.

This is the only forum made up almost exclusively of women. It's nice to have a man-free space, there are loads of hilarious posters here and I've learnt a lot from reading posts.

Mumsnet is in the papers all the time, it's a really famous site, so why wouldn't non-parents have heard of it? I came on one time just to see what the fuss is about and got hooked on AIBU and the feminist section.

The vast majority of the posts are nothing to do with kids.

ExcuuuuuuuUUUse me if I'm not welcome though.*

*Joke, I'm just being passive aggressive hungover.

Trills · 01/01/2012 18:33

She did ask a question Sue - and we have answered it.

The OP is not being unreasonable to not understand, but she is perhaps being rather small-minded and/or lacking in imagination.

If she was actually not asking AIBU at all but asking "why do people without children come on MN?" then that has been answered too.

Mumof2littlebubbas · 01/01/2012 18:37

Not sure why people think this Is a rude question.
She sounds like she's just asking due to the name of the site.

Scuttlebutter · 01/01/2012 18:37

999, Hmm not sure what rock you've been living under but you might have noticed a few events in recent years, like, for instance the General Election, or campaigns in the media about the sexualisation of children? MN has been impossible to avoid in any mainstream media - remember the fuss about Gordon Brown's favourite biscuit? "The Mumsnet Election" ring any bells? Google searches on topics will often throw up things on MN. It's mentioned constantly in broadsheets like the Telegraph, and on Radio 4.

Do share with us what terrible advice has been given you here by a non parent - do you want your money back?

I think the only person wanting a row is you.

Personally, I FUCKING love the CUNTING swearing.

Tigerstripes · 01/01/2012 18:37

I found the site when I was googling a school I was thinking of applying to (am teacher), realised I could get a lot of 'parent insider' info about schools from the education boards. Then one day stumbled across AIBU and never left! I also am constantly in two minds about whether or not to have children so I like reading the good times/bad times child related posts to give me some idea of what to expect.

lenfercest · 01/01/2012 18:38

It's very far from man-free, Yellowraincoat.

Confused
SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 18:38

It was, you're right. This is why you are better at this than me.
In my tiny mind it made sense - of course YANBU to not understand something. But that wasn't really the point of the OP, was it?

Pandemoniaa · 01/01/2012 18:40

Me too, Scuttlebutter. It's cunting brilliant.

Oh, and not that your choice of alter ego is any of my business, I suppose if you insist on going by the name of *Mumof2littlebubbas" you are going to get defensive about those of us that you see as imposters. But that's just fucking tough.

Hogmanayhoneyblossom · 01/01/2012 18:43

Milk- but if you gave advice As if you were a parent, and weren't honest about it, I'd feel cheated and mislead.

SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 18:43

Mumof2littlebubbas - excellent Grin. The lil' doesn't work in names, of course. Good effort.

Trills · 01/01/2012 18:43

No, it wasn't the point of the OP.

If people phrase a question as AIBU but actually mean something else I take passive aggressive joy in answering what they have asked, not what they actually wanted.

See all and any "AIBU to dislike this book/film.TV show/celebrity?" threads for examples.

SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 18:45

No Trills, I know, I'm not explaining myself well. I meant that it didn't read as if the OP genuinely wanted to be enlightened. So not a question.
And I've not even been drinking Grin

NotTheBlinkingGruffaloAgain · 01/01/2012 18:50

I use it because it's full of intelligent wise women and I'm scrambling through life hoping one day to have children.
I'm a nanny I love my profession but it's quite lonely at times its nice to get advice from women .

SarahStratton · 01/01/2012 18:51

I have prosecco, want some?

PeanutButterCupCake · 01/01/2012 18:57

stratters I want wine! Hand it over....u have ryvita to share damn January diets

Excuse my ignorance but is OP asking a question or just trying to start a bun fight? prepares rock bun

SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 18:58

It all makes sense to me you know

To be fair, the OP came back 100 odd posts later and 'asked' it again as if nobody had answered. That was kind of my point.

It's the new year diet addling my brain.
