To not really understand why people without kids use sites like this?

Obviously this doesn't apply to people trying to conceive or those going through te adoption process.

I must say it hadn't occured to me that non parents would use this site. Isn't it clearly aimed at parents? I suppose there is no reason why people without children can't enjoy lots of the topics, I just can't see why they would even be on a parenting forum in the first place. It would certainly worry me if they were contributing to any of the parenting threads.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 01/01/2012 17:51

but I would be a bit miffed if I posted in parenting then had a non parent giving advice. Same goes for men, actually.

Why in gods name would you be miffed?!? I've given advice in parenting, and will continue to do so....I'm a nanny, not a parent....so sue me

I use this site because it's marvellous :o and I'm very grateful to the fantastic support and help I've had whilst onhere I even have a thread about it :o

JustHecate · 01/01/2012 17:52

worry you? why worry you? not snarky, genuinely don't know what there is to worry about.

There are loads of people without children who can make invaluable contributions.

There are people who don't have children themselves but who are far more experienced in child care than I am, with only 2 children. - nannies, childminders, teachers etc. Maybe people who had 10 younger siblings. You don't have to be a parent to know about children.

SarahStratton · 01/01/2012 17:53

I have never ever been in any of the parenting sections of MN. None of them.

I live quite literally on Chat and AIBU. With a fair amount of foraging in Relationships. I have been to Good Housekeeping once or twice, and scared myself over in Feminism. But I have never used this site as a parenting forum.

So what counts as parents in the minds of the more judgemental?

Only I don't have what could be described as children any longer - although I do have a baby granddaughter.

But I do like lively discussions with people who don't faint away at the sight of the word "fuck". I don't use the sections of the site where my experience is probably wildly out of date but equally, I don't want to shuffle off to a granny forum when I fit absolutely none of the stereotypes.

In conclusion, who gives a fuck? Aren't there more pressing things in life to worry about?

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 01/01/2012 17:56

Do people actually come on here to talk about their children?! God, how dull.

I suspect most parents go into the parenting bits when they need specific advice, but other than that it's very much the non-parenting forums - AIBU, chat, S&B, news, politics, feminism, etc - which get the most traffic.

I genuinely don't understand why this question needs to be asked quite so often. Surely it's obvious. This is a massively busy forum with loads of very busy sub-forums that have zero to do with actual parenting.

Proudnscary · 01/01/2012 17:56

Please can people without children stop posting on this thread - it's for parents who want to feel superior/paranoid about...those people.

yousankmybattleship · 01/01/2012 17:57

Sorry, worry was probably the wrong word. I just mean that if you haven't got your own children you don't know what it is like to be a parent. I know there are a great mean professionals who know the theory but they don't know what it is like to live with your own children, to worry about them every day of your life, to love them so much it makes you heart nearly explode and at the same time be so frustrated by them that you'd sriously consider putting them in the wheelie bin (not that I have ever done that!). If I want advice from a teacher/childminder etc etc I'm sure there are plenty of places I can go for that advice. I genuinely though the advice on here was from fellow parents who really understand what it is like.

SuePurblybilt · 01/01/2012 17:57

Why does everyone join MN, wait a week, then start questioning everything about it? Grin. Any views on Like buttons? Tickers?

As for being miffed at getting advice from non-parents - so someone with a phd in child psychology would be no use to you but you'd listen to someone saying 'you know ur bubz hun' because they've exercised their uterus more?

Gah.

PaintedToenails · 01/01/2012 17:57

Ah, stuff this. I vote that all the Child-Free contributors on this thread head on over to the Child-Rearing boards and spew out advice in all directions!

yousankmybattleship · 01/01/2012 17:58

Many professionals - not mean professionals by the way!!

ariadneoliver · 01/01/2012 18:00

I think I'll change my name to mumof3babbies first :o

Ifancyashandy · 01/01/2012 18:01

Because I heard about the coven of witches intelligent conversations and knew I'd fit right in.

Because I'm a daughter, aunt, sister, cousin, granddaughter, friend and generally the people here are welcoming to all sorts. I repeat, generally.

Hmm
PaintedToenails · 01/01/2012 18:03

Or maybe we come here because there is no decent swearing on barrencronesnet

RealityNeedsANameChange.....would you like to bring your DRs round for a playdate with my DGP?

YonderRevoltingPeasantWhoIsHe · 01/01/2012 18:03

reality I'm also a peeeedo, but I've got chinchillas instead. Do you think there are lots of us on this site?

Pekka · 01/01/2012 18:04

We have no kids yet, I am 30 weeks pregnant. I signed up to MN when I was 5 weeks pregnant. I have found MN very addictive, much more so than Facebook!
I realise I don't have valid opinions on child rearing, but I have enjoyed the threads about politics, AIBUs etc. There are plenty of threads for childfree people.

Haziedoll · 01/01/2012 18:06

They may have accidentally stumbled upon the site and got drawn in. I used to post on a forum for solicitors/law students and The Student Room forum. I'm not a lawyer or a student I just discovered them by chance and got sucked in.

BsshBossh · 01/01/2012 18:06

I had no idea this website existed before I had DC and even if I had any idea I would not have been bothered to visit it, thinking it to be just for parents. But now I've perused most of the Talk sections I can see this is a fabulous forum site with topics that have nothing or little to do with parenting.

PaintedToenails · 01/01/2012 18:07

Yonder.....your DChinchilla will make an excellent addition to the DRabbit and DGuineapig play date! I do hope, however, that my DGP is not picked on by the others because I do, on occasion, shop at Asda. Although I have got some v. naice hay......

PeanutButterCupCake · 01/01/2012 18:07

Can some one lend me a child, so that my contribution to any threads is valid.

Is every thread about children?

Irrationally annoyed by Title unsure why

GoingForGoalWeight · 01/01/2012 18:08

I have no problem with non-parents using Mumsnet. Mumsnet is the place to be :)

YonderRevoltingPeasantWhoIsHe · 01/01/2012 18:09

Now, I don't understand why people who shop at Asda use this site. I only use organic farmers' markets and Waitrose at a push.

My PFR is pedigree ...

YorkshireTeacake · 01/01/2012 18:09

I came for advice when I was sick and wanted my Mum. Now I just enjoy popping in and reading about people's weird and wonderful lives (particularly on AIBU) ... it's a bit like reading one of those 'real life' magazines, I suppose!
