It's hilarious.

That massive framed picture on top of the funeral car. The OTT speeches. Kim-Jong Un's hairdo.

It's like something off Monty Python.

crumpet · 28/12/2011 21:25

Bollocks. Monty

bemybebe · 28/12/2011 21:29

Totally crumpet.

I did not see anything about the grandson yet. All I heard he went to super-duper posh school in Switzerland, did not learn any languages there, failed all his exams (not a single gsce equivalent) but enjoyed numerous computer games. Charming!

StickAForkInMeImDone · 28/12/2011 21:30

Crumpet Didn't he also claim to have invented the hamburger!

Of all the things to make up, the invention of the hamburger was on his list Grin

crumpet · 28/12/2011 21:37

Yes, and particularly odd given that so many N Koreans were forced to dig up grass to eat

EmmaBemma · 28/12/2011 21:47

Barbara Demick's "Nothing To Envy" and Kang Chol-Hwan's "Aquariums of Pyongyang" make excellent reading for anyone who would like to learn a bit more about the lives of North Koreans. Otherwise knock yourselves out, yukking it up at weirdy foreigners on the telly.

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 21:50

Ha ha, I'm racist now too.

Seriously, I did war studies as part of my degree. I know plenty about North Korea.

What "ist" was I when I was laughing at Diana's OTT funeral? Ladywithsadeyesist? Dianaist?

Bemybabe, I don't think anyone said the North Korean army couldn't possibly beat anyone. But the assessment of their military prowess was made in response to a suggestion that they could be some kind of military force in a WW3- they couldn't. They also, thankfully, lack many of the advantages the Soviets had. The USSR had a much larger population than Nazi Germany and more extensive natural resources. They also had shitloads of land that was well out of the way of the Nazi army that they could move things to. Which is why, for example, a lot of armanent and factory production was moved to the Urals, where the invaders were never going to reach. And they had allies. North Korea have none of these advantages, which is why they aren't a military threat to anyone except their neighbours. Not that I'm trying to minimise that.

As for the brainwashing, are you really suggesting that a slew of sycophantic newspaper articles are even remotely comparable to what goes in in North Korea? Because if you are, you don't get it. There aren't any alternative viewpoints publicly available to North Koreans. None at all. There are here, and there were in 1997. Oh, you can brainwash someone here if you lock them in a room, and allow them to access nothing but information that promotes a particular viewpoint. But that didn't happen in the Diana aftermath, whereas it's exactly what happens in North Korea- just in a very big room. That is why there is no comparison.

crumpet · 28/12/2011 22:02

Bet Kim Jong wished he had a hat and gloves on.

FreudianSlipper · 28/12/2011 22:13

really what is funny about a whole nation being so controlled that they live in fear of everyone including their own family

HowlingBitch · 28/12/2011 22:17

I can understand how the huge framed picture of his ugly bake on top of the car was funny though.

Ugly git.

Ripeberry · 28/12/2011 22:18

Be glad you are not N.Korea, poor people Sad

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 22:18

"I can understand how the huge framed picture of his ugly bake on top of the car was funny though.

Ugly git."

Thank you.

I think this bandwagon is breaking under the weight of everybody now. OP clearly didn't mean it the way we all are taking it.

He was if anything funny looking. Again, Ugly git.

FreudianSlipper · 28/12/2011 22:25

i thought god that is a bad wig he was wearing but at this point i am just not finding it that funny when in the same news report and only seconds later you see people getting hysterical and knowing why they are

HowlingBitch · 28/12/2011 22:33

Now this made me wet myself.

melika · 28/12/2011 22:37

I just thought they were brain washed to adore him. But now I know they are shit scared I really feel sorry for them.

Very sad, indeed.

nomoreheels · 28/12/2011 22:38

Judging by this one & some other threads I've read, it appears that MN has lost its sense of humour today. The footage I saw was definitely humourous, in a dark way. The presenters nearly sobbing, the ridiculous procession. Does it mean I have no compassion for the plight of the north Koreans? Does it feck.

He was a ridiculous character, especially in Team America. Grin

AmberLeaf · 28/12/2011 22:53

YANBU OP, I got your point and I agree.

I was watching early this morning and despite knowing that the mourning was forced I did laugh in a WTF?! sort of way.

I was laughing at the farsical [sp] nature of it not the plight of the N Korean people.

A1980 · 28/12/2011 23:22

I felt that way about princess Diana's death and funeral. How many people actually knew her? All that pathetic faked outpouring of grief over an utter stranger.

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 23:27

Well, the North Koreans don't really have a choice about whether they mourn or not, unless they have a death wish.

It really was more the actual funeral that I thought was amusing, not the mourners.

OP posts:
BehindLockNumberNine · 28/12/2011 23:29

I am sooo glad I am not North Korean... I can't cry on command. And even worse, when faced with a terrible situation and sombreness is required I get the nervous giggles...

I would not have lasted long in NK would I??

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 23:36

You have to find your sad trigger (to be able to cry on command) Mine is when Bouncer died in Neighbours :(

I imagine the North Koreans have their triggers, like being shot if they don't cry. :(

OP posts:
KittyFane · 28/12/2011 23:39

I am probably being very thick.
Yes you are OP.
The whole thing is dangerous, oppressive and tragic fir the people who live under this regime.
Not a bit :o more Shock

KittyFane · 28/12/2011 23:39

for

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 23:42

Hahahahahahahhahahah! Concentration camps! Hahahahahahahahaha! Brainwashing! Hahahahahahahahahah! Corporal punishment for non-conformity!

I may as well laugh about those things because I'm getting bollocked for it regardless of the fact that I haven't.
