To be wetting myself laughing at Kim Jong Il's funeral coverage?

It's hilarious.

That massive framed picture on top of the funeral car. The OTT speeches. Kim-Jong Un's hairdo.

It's like something off Monty Python.

The parallel between Diana and KJI funeral is the popular brainwash that the world somehow will never be the same. In NK it is also peppered by the geniune fear that now the enemy is likely to strike and people should unite even more.

limitedperiodonly · 28/12/2011 20:02

You implied you were laughing at them. But I obviously misunderstood.

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 20:05

How did I imply I was laughing at them? No mention of mourners in my OP or any post after that.

Agree with most of what has been said above

NK is an incredibly repressive regime and there is nothing to suggest that Kim Jong's son is going to be any more pleasant than he was.

Satellite images show that there are huge prison camps where people are kept in appalling conditions, forced into slave labour and have starvation rations and this is backed up by reports from refugees. There are also suggestions that some prisoners are used in experiments developing biochemical weapons. Some of the people there are being punished not because they have done anything but because their relations upset the regime - NK will punish up to 3 generations for a crime. the press is not free, you are not free to associate with who you wish, food is scarce, secret police are everywhere, the cult of personality is all around you from your earliest days.

In such circumstances you too would stand on the streets and pretend to mourn whatever you may feel in your heart.

FlangelinaBallerina · 28/12/2011 20:19

Fergoose, thanks.

Bemybabe, yes they could certainly inflict a lot of damage with their weapons, but not enough, thankfully, to bring on world war 3. This is a good thing! The Nazi-Soviet front in WW2 was, whilst hideous, not in itself sufficient to qualify as a world war. World War 2 is so called because there were participant nations from every continent, and fighting in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas (sort of) and the prospect of it in Australia. The North Koreans would no doubt fight fiercely, and perhaps there would be comparable carnage and bloodshed to the Eastern Front in WW2, but it isn't going global. They don't have any real allies- China don't want war. They have too much savvy and self interest for that.

Also, I'm sorry but there wasn't brainwashing when Diana died. There wasn't a whole oppressive state apparatus imposing that view on pain of death, and there were dissenting voices both in the media and the general public. I said how ridiculous it was at the time (and since) and have yet to be sent to a gulag. What you're describing was near hysteria and canonisation- distasteful and stupid, but not the same at all.

bemybebe · 28/12/2011 20:21

Look at . Frozen fish distribution in Pyongyang to mark the funeral.

According to the US state dept average NK food intake is 1500 kkal. KJU should take note.

OhTheConfusion · 28/12/2011 20:21

YABVVVVVVVU!

Have not read whole thread but if you find the terror, fear and opression these people live in funny then I hope for your simple minded sake you never have to go through such things.

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 20:23

Well, perhaps you should read the entire thread or maybe even just the OP before posting.

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 28/12/2011 20:24

I inferred that you were laughing at them. But your subsequent posts, especially after other people posted in distaste, convinced me that I was mistaken.

moondog · 28/12/2011 20:25

I went t the SK/NK border last year.
Truly the most sureal experience of my life.

One could see and hear the people in NK.
There is a hut with a table in it with a line down the middle to show exactly where each half start and ends.

Lines of soldies face each other in combat stance, motionless fror hours and impassive behind nmirrored sunglasses.
The lives those peopel lead are the stuff of one's worse nightmare.

bemybebe · 28/12/2011 20:26

Flangelina I brought up WWII Eastern front as an illustration that underequipped and undertrained army is capable of defeating an army as efficient as German pre1941. As for brainwashing - one just needs to be watching trashy TV and read tabloid newspaper and switch the part of the brain that is given for analytical thinking to be brainwashed. No gulag necessarily required.

southeastastra · 28/12/2011 20:29

think the majority of people do not know or understand what is happening and the weeping and wailing, without knowing the reasons why are pretty weird images surely

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 20:30

"Thanks for the explanation OP. At first I thought you were laughing at the mourners which would be deplorable. But now I realise you are laughing with them that makes it okay."

Was the bit in bold not an attempt at sarcasm, then? Confused

And I disagree with you Lying re comedians and satirists in this country.
Many of them are very good indeed, and do through black humour what it would take governments years to get through to people.
Ds16 watches HIGNFU and all that type of thing, and has a very good perspective on events in the world.

Kayano · 28/12/2011 20:30

FFS

There is a difference between having a laugh at a RIDICULOUS OTT funeral full of irony because we all know deep down ever NK citizen is not mourning, it's a forced charade

To laughing at people being oppressed. Op is not laughing at the oppressed NK citizens Hmm she is laughing at the ludicrous situation creates by an equally ludicrous regime.

So I don't get people lecturing and saying 'oppression is not funny how dare you' because OP never said it was!

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 28/12/2011 20:32

I can remember watching a programme about North Korea a few years ago.

They filmed at an orphanage, where the staff were digging up grass roots to boil up and feed the children and yet they were still saying how grateful they were.

If they'd said otherwise i'm in no doubt they'd have paid with their freedom at the very least.

Hilarious.

bemybebe · 28/12/2011 20:32

"we all know deep down ever NK citizen is not mourning, it's a forced charade"

I actually disagree.

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 20:33

Thank you, Kayano. I can't see where I've even vaguely hinted that I regularly roll around in mirth at violent oppression. Hmm

If the funeral procession (you know, the bit that I am finding amusing) isn't ripped apart on HIGNFY, then I will lick my toilet bowl.

OP posts:
BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 20:34

Oh orphanages now. I'm laughing at orphanages.

OP posts:
bemybebe · 28/12/2011 20:34

Sorry, posted too early.
I actually think that a large chunk of population is genuine in their emotions (mourning mixed with fear for future) as they trully know no better and only a small minority has to act not to rise suspicions of the thought police.

southeastastra · 28/12/2011 20:35

this thread will now go on for about 600 posts any bets?

moondog · 28/12/2011 20:36

If you have been told all your life that the rest of the worls are evil bastards out to kill oyu, you'd probably believe it.

I remember a Russian telling me how shocked she had been when her mother sighted one night and said something like 'I'm sick of hearing about bloody Lenin'.

Kayano · 28/12/2011 20:36

Op Wine

Those orphanage fuckers Hmm what the hell people jumping all over the bash op bandwagon

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 28/12/2011 20:39

I am probably being very thick. I am clearly laughing at every inhumanity ever done to a human in the history of the world because I found a massive, massive picture on top of a car/theatrical speeches/a hairstyle a bit funny.

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 28/12/2011 20:44

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, or so I'm told, OP
