To feel so guilty? Found out I am pregnant this morning...

Er, name change. I am actually quite embarrassed. I found out I am pregnant this morning (couple of days before period due, so 3-4 weeks). We are thrilled.
BUT yesterday I had about 3 or 4 glasses of wine across the course of the day - with mountains for food - and - eek - a cigarette. I don't usually smoke. It took ages to concieve DS and this was our first month trying, rubbish timing, no symptoms etc. I really didn't think I was preg.
I feel SO guilty! Like a terrible mother. Did anyone else do this before finding out they were preg? I feel foolish - I didn't drink at ALL when trying for or pregnant with DS.

yes! we went to our friends wedding and I'd had a miscarriage and nothing seemed to be happening so I had a good time - lots of alcohol - lots of headache tablets the next day and oops I was already pregnant didn't know - he was a 9lb whopper and is 14 now! try not to worry!

Crabapple99 · 26/12/2011 11:39

Don't feel guilty, the vast majority of motheres theroughout histry haven't known they were preganant until at least 6-8 weeks, if then and the human race seems to bhave survived.

I hope you are right, before your period id due is an extrememly unreliable time to test.

TwelveGaysOfChristmas · 26/12/2011 11:39

I think everyone does this before figuring it out. You can't instantly know from the time the sperm invades the egg! Honestly - don't sweat it. I found out I was pregnant just after Bonfire night and not only was it my best friends 21st but we had our traditional Fireworks party too! I probably had enough alcohol in my system to set fire to my breath!

fivegomadindorset · 26/12/2011 11:39

Yes for both of them.

squeakytoy · 26/12/2011 11:39

Congratulations :) and stop worrying. My friend smoked 20 a day, and was atrociously drunk at a hen night the week before she found out she was pregnant.

Her 11lb baby was born two years ago and is absolutely fine.

fivegomadindorset · 26/12/2011 11:40

And congratulations.

trulyscrumptious43 · 26/12/2011 11:40

I did way worse than that at 6-7 weeks, DD is now at university. Don't sweat the small stuff as they say.

marriedandwreathedinholly · 26/12/2011 11:41

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Alll will be well. Four glasses of wine and one cigarette will do no harm and wiLl be out of your system or on its way by now. Enjoy your pg.

You must have thought you might be though or you wouldn't have done a test would you?

NinkyNonker · 26/12/2011 11:42

It's fine. I think they don't start drawing from us till 6 or 8 weeks or something? Whatever it is it is later than the standard preg test delay period.

Boxingdayguilt · 26/12/2011 11:44

Phew - thanks all. married and wreathedinholly - I am a bit of a pregnancy test addict since trying for DS, and had one left over. Actually woke up feeling guilty about all the drinking (considering what I thought was a small chance I was preg) and thought I would test just to see. Was SHOCKED to see a positive, honestly!

I found out I was pregnant when we were on holiday, I'd been guzzling wine and smoking like a fiend for 2 weeks beforehand. Everything turned out fine!

fluffytowels · 26/12/2011 11:45

I found out I was pregnant the day after I came back from holiday. Wine at 11, Unpasteurised cheese, many fags.

I cried at my booking in app and the Midwife laughed. She said 'sweetheart, if all that were true there'd be very few babies in this world'

They have a yolk sac to get them through the first bit.

Now congratulations GrinGrinGrin

abbierhodes · 26/12/2011 11:47

I don't think you'll have done any harm...lots of people smoke and drink when they know they're pregnant and the babies are generally fine.

However, you need to be honest with yourself...you knew you might be pregnant yesterday, when you did these things. This hasn't come out of the blue, so why are you pretending to feel guilty now?

GnomeDePlume · 26/12/2011 11:47

Congratulations!

I suspect that much alcohol was consumed around the conception of all three of mine. Plus I didnt find out about DC3 until 17 weeks pregnant ('that explains a lot') so alcohol was consumed for an extended period after the off.

All three of mine are fine!

IwoulddoPachacuti · 26/12/2011 11:50

I drunk pretty much an entire box of red wine 3 days before I found out I was pregnant with DS. Blush

It happens, he is fine Smile

Boxingdayguilt · 26/12/2011 11:51

Um, abbierhodes, I'm not pretending to feel guilty! I thought there was a tiny chance I was pregnant, and drank, but that's different from knowing you are pregnant and have been drinking IYSWIM?

Thanks to all for your reassurance and congratulations :)

YABU.

Please don't feel guilty. A couple of nights before I found out I was pregnant, I'd been at a concert, in the moshpit, and rather drunk... DS turned out fine. Wink

We're not psychic. We don't automatically "know" we're pregnant at the point of conception. I didn't have a clue until my pregnancy test came back positive.

Congraulations on the pregnancy. :)

GingerWrath · 26/12/2011 11:52

I got through Christmas, New Years and 2 weeks wiping out and drinking gluwein skiing in Austria, before it dawned on me that I was pregnant.

My 5 yo DD is fine.

Congratulations!

FabbyChic · 26/12/2011 11:57

Of course people done it, don't be so hard on yourself, I smoked throughout pregnancy 20 odd years ago.

EricNordmanfirandMistletoe · 26/12/2011 11:58

I drank lots of vodka and smoked fags the night before I tested and I didn't feel guilty. It's not going to do the blastocyst any harm.

fluffytowels · 26/12/2011 12:00

Gnome, that reminds me of the gag, I wasn't pregnant the night I got drunk but I was by the end of it Wink

raspberryhead · 26/12/2011 12:02

Boxing you're not the only one. Same situation for me last year. Had a lovely Saturday evening dinner with loads to drink. Suddenly woke up Sunday am and ran to the loo to do a pregnancy test and it was positive! Felt so guilty at the time, but dd is fine.
Congratulations! Hope all goes well.

KeepInMindItsChristmas · 26/12/2011 12:03

Don't beat yourself up over it, we tried for 3 years for DS2 after conceiving DS1 on the first attempt.

I gave up waiting in the end and over the millenium celebrations I ate and drank everything they say you should not, shell fish, soft cheese, alcohol, then on Jan 6th found out I was pregnant, The result is a now 11 year old who has been riding around on his trike 5 all morning,

Congratulations

Boxingdayguilt · 26/12/2011 12:04

Thanks Eric and others for reminding me about the yolk sack, blastocyst etc - had forgotten that Blush. Feeling better now, although physically MUCH worse than I would usually feel after 3 glasses of wine! That'll teach me...

Foetus is barely even implanted. Try not to worry. Did same with DD3- spent weekend in Budapest when about 3-4 weeks pregnant thinking my period would start any moment (after 6 years of unsuccessful ttc), drinking, going to hot pools and saunas and flying. Baby now 2.4 yo and delightful, showing no signs of any damage apart from bruises from bouncing off the sofa.
