Now idea why they have the Americanism "military".
And why does this song sound far better on the radio than TV? I have an idea, but I'm too polite to say.

Devilforasideboard · 26/12/2011 01:54

I'm glad too. Some alternative lyrics below which made this military wife smile.

The wonderful Military Wives Choir- alternative funny lyrics written by Sarah Myers

Wherever you are, I wish I could get through,
... The dog is lost, the fish are dead,
What am I s?posed to do?

Wherever you are, I need to know your PIN,
The bank has called, won?t speak to me
?we have to speak to him?

Light up the darkness, oh, where are the bulbs
You?ve put them somewhere safe and sound,
But no one have you told,

Light up the darkness, oh, where are the keys?
I am locked out of the house
and I may need to call the police.

Wherever I am, I don?t know what to do,
The kids are ill, your mother?s phoned
And wants to speak to you.

Wherever I am, not sure what day it is,
The Sky wont? work, I have to call,
But they?ll just say ?its his?

Light up the darkness, night has come
But I still have to grab a coat and go and mow the lawn,
Light up the darkness, for all my sins,
I must change a fuse, fix countless things
And put out all the bins.

CumpyGruntWithJinglyBellsOn · 26/12/2011 02:53

God bless Kurt Kobain Sad

SanTEEClaus · 26/12/2011 05:53

Gareth choose the name if the choir so you'll have to ask him why military.

What would you prefer?

seeker · 26/12/2011 06:10

I was hoping for Domenic the Donkey.......

moonferret · 26/12/2011 06:20

Gareth choose the name if the choir
Eh?!

And who the f* is Gareth?

The UK word for "military" is "forces".

SanTEEClaus · 26/12/2011 06:41

Gareth would be the person who created the choir. Try watching the show that led to the single. You might lose some ignorance.

Love Tee who is fucking sick of the open American xenophobia on MN

OK, you've proved you're not actually all that polite, so why do think it sounds better on the radio?? Confused

I think it sounds the same

can't believe you didn't know who Gareth was...

Tante I've heard the song, that's it...not developed a sad obsession...! And yes, I am polite, with polite people.

LtXmasEve · 26/12/2011 07:07

Military is not the American word for Forces. Whatever gave you that silly idea? It is interchangable, we say Military as easily as we say Forces - in fact I'd say we use Military more as it can be abbreviated.

What a strange thing to comment on.

moonferret · 26/12/2011 07:14

"Military" is indeed the American word for forces. "Forces" may be used as well, but "military" is far more common. Here, in the UK, it is very rarely heard. That is why the name sounds very odd. Whatever gave you the silly idea that we use the word "military" here?
What a strange thing to bother replying to, more so when you're talking abject nonsense.

Bossybritches22 · 26/12/2011 07:14

Getting back to the thread OP- yes I'm delighted too whatever your thoughts on the song/programme/Military the bottom line is 2 charities that do a hell of a lot of good for forces personnel & their families have had a boost to their coffers

They have also had their profile raised so maybe people who didn't know the extent of their work have a greater awareness. All good.

Love the alternative version devil !

LtXmasEve · 26/12/2011 07:22

As a member of the British Military, for the last 21 years, I can say with some authority that the word Military is interchangeable with the word Forces Smile. The word forces does not have a recognised Military abbreviation, where as the word Military does.

If you want me to be even more pedantic, I can - those in the Military use 'Service Person' or 'SP' more often than Mil or Forces, but SP's Wives just doesn't have the same ring to it!

(I too love Devil's version - very true!)

seeker · 26/12/2011 07:25

And those are the charities we most want to support this Christmas?

LtXmasEve · 26/12/2011 07:30

SSAFA definately, they do a wonderful job and provide support to thousands.

Bossybritches22 · 26/12/2011 07:33

Of course not seeker we all have our own favourite charities & sadly they can't all be in the limelight at the same time.

These too just happen to be in the news at the moment, so it's great that they are benefitting, you don't have to support them if you have other equally worthy charities to help Xmas Grin

moonferret · 26/12/2011 07:33

LtXmasEve Not amongst the general public it isn't "interchangeable". Maybe in the forces it is, but it's not in usage amongst the UK PUBLIC.

Bossybritches22 · 26/12/2011 07:36

Actually moonferret I disagree, I think the UK public DO understand the two as interchangeable, does it really matter? Hmm

moonferret · 26/12/2011 07:40

No, they may understand what "military" means, but the word "military" is not UK usage. And yes, it clearly matters to some people, as they argued back, despite me being correct.

Bossybritches22 · 26/12/2011 07:44

Ok well we'll agree to disagree on that one MF as it's something I DO hear & see in common usage, maybe it's a geographical thing? Xmas Grin

namechangerbat · 26/12/2011 07:45

Seems like you lot forget the Christmas cheer fairly quickly.

For fuck sake you grumpy old fish.
