to my SIL for christmas. We are visiting on Tuesday and now am worrying it won't seem enough to her. I would love one myself but they are not cheap!

OP posts:
JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 26/12/2011 21:48

snowmaiden you could sell them to us lot! Grin PM me if you fancy getting rid of some.

OhTheConfusion · 26/12/2011 21:49

Mmmmm French Lime Blossom. YADNBU, it is a lovely gift.

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 26/12/2011 22:30

Snow maiden, yup PM me and might find some swapsies for you Xmas Grin

PercyFilth · 26/12/2011 23:18

Thirty-eight quid for a candle. They see you lot coming, don't they. :o

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 26/12/2011 23:55

They are no ordinary candles Wink dh bought me one 2 years ago and it still smells beautiful and lasts for ages - it doesn't really glow like an unscented candle it is just gorgeous. Bearing in mind it has been alight for the same amount of time that the white company one has that dh recently purchased and lasted about a week Hmm he has resolved only to buy JM candles if he doing so in the future.

PercyFilth · 27/12/2011 00:03

No ordinary candle? You light it, it smells. What's so special about that? or does it do something else I'm not in on, fnarr fnarr.

Sorry, scented candles have never been my thing. Candles are useful if you want occasional soft lighting, or when there's a power cut (and we get lots of those where I am).

UserNameNotAvailable · 27/12/2011 00:11

How much!?! just googled it and saw that they cost £20+. I even saw a "luxury candle" for £260 Xmas Shock

Of course if your sil doesn't want it I'll have it Xmas Grin

ComposHat · 27/12/2011 00:15

Yes that is a nice thing to get.

Meltysnowflakes · 27/12/2011 00:19

Jo Malone or not, candles are a disappointing present. (for me) and I say that having had a 2 pack Yankee Candle as a preset from my DB and SIL.
They are Winter Christmas and White Christmas. (I think) They stink to high heaven and
1: are too heavy to put in my case on the way home (flight, case already overloaded) and
2: are not encouraged by my landlords because of a spate of fires related to candles, (we had a note put through the door to this effect) and
3: Christmas candles are a bit pointless anytime after new year which is when I will be back home anyway.
(And they left the price on, reduced from 39.99 to 19.99!)
My Jo Malone bath oil on the other hand is perfect. Smile

PippiLongBottom · 27/12/2011 00:23

I'd be v disappointed if anyone that knew me bought one cos I just don't do fripperies but I suppose I would be thankful of the thought. If I were to spend £38 on something indulgent it would be Mac make-up.

Cabrinha · 27/12/2011 00:51

I won't diss it as a gift as clearly many people love them. Personally I don't like scented candles - how bad do other people's homes smell?!!! - and quite simply, no candle is worth the best part of forty quid!!!

scrappydoodah · 27/12/2011 08:00

My SIL gave me a scented candle. It is going straight to the charity shop!!! It's not Jo Malone, but frankly it wouldn't make any difference if it was. I hate artificial smells around the house - bleurghhhh. The house is clean, it smells pretty neutral, and a lot better than the candle.

I'd rather she didn't buy me anything tbh, as I now have the whole guilt thing, and she has wasted money.

ApplesinmyPocket · 27/12/2011 08:47

I never use scented candles but from the moment I read about Jo M candles (on MN!) I had them pegged as 'the sort of gift people buy for someone whom they wish to have a special luxury present' and your SIL ought to be very pleased that you felt like that about her.

(I usually ask for, and get, very practical presents... this year was 'The Year of The Many Knickers' - which I was delighted with, don't get me wrong.)

Grockle · 27/12/2011 08:55

Lovely gift if she likes candles. I'd buy one for my DSis but not miserable SIL

peggyblackett · 27/12/2011 09:01

Lovely present.

The Skye Candle Company looks good, will give them a go. My recommendation for good but cheaper than JM is the St. Eval Candle Co. Great scent that lingers in your room for days!

eurochick · 27/12/2011 09:07

It's a lovely gift. I hate cheap scented candles - they mostly smell vile. But I love Jo Malone or Diptyque (I have been using a lovely Diptyque Figuier to take away the cooking smells in my very open plan house).

ViviPrudolf · 27/12/2011 09:24

Hmm, I couldn't buy a Skye candle on principle that their branding incorporates one of my most loathed typefaces

My candle tip is either Long Barn - good value but limited selection or Bisoux] - great selection, high quality but pricey. [[http://themeltco.com/ Melt look good too.

My favourite candle ever is the Prada Infusion d'Iris one that came in a set with the perfume. I've gone off the perfume, but the candle has a slightly different aroma and smells amazing. I can't find another one to buy anywhere though Sad

dementedma · 27/12/2011 22:00

vivi typefaces? WTF?

ViviPrudolf · 27/12/2011 22:30

Scriptina. Nasty.

LadyHarrietDeSpook · 27/12/2011 22:43

OP: I adore candles but have had a rude reaction from someone after giving one...I think you'll be fine personally though, most people will know JM. I agree with the comments about them being a perfect gift - a bit too indulgent to buy for oneself, lovely to receive.

Vivi - I have looked at all your recs, they all look great. Is there one you like best of all esp the bisoux?

ViviPrudolf · 27/12/2011 23:13

The Bisoux mint & geranium is particularly nice, I think the travel candle sets offer the best value.

I forgot before, but I bought a load of these hazelnut cream candles when I was at the wholesalers as they were cheap and I can put them through as a company expense shh don't tell . Perhaps not suitable as a gift and as not as la-di-da as other suggestions, but smell A-mazing.

serin · 27/12/2011 23:17

As someone who has to make do with Betty Crocker's Gingerbread variety(and very nice it is too!) I would be thrilled to receive a Jo Malone version.

foreverondiet · 27/12/2011 23:29

I posted about something similar for my birthday, basically I was cross than my SIL had spent so much on a candle, I couldn't see the point and I gave it to my sister who has a dog and likes to light candles to hide doggy smell.

I agree with the comment overpriced piece of wax.

PercyFilth · 28/12/2011 00:19

Working on ideas to make millions of £££s out of gullible trend-followers. Can't wait to relieve you all of your cash. Wink

Sebsosmummy · 28/12/2011 06:05

As a massive Jo Malone fan, it's a perfect gift. However fan or not, any present is just that and they should be pleased that you thought of them at all
