to my SIL for christmas. We are visiting on Tuesday and now am worrying it won't seem enough to her. I would love one myself but they are not cheap!

i'll have it!

YouOldSlag · 25/12/2011 23:37

A Jo Malone candle is an expensive overindulgence and therefore perfect as a present.

An ideal present should be something you really want but can't justify buying for yourself.

SkinnedAlive · 25/12/2011 23:38

I got one in the past and I was delighted. It is a wonderful present :)

fatfingers · 25/12/2011 23:39

Well I don't have a clue what a Jo Malone candle is. I guess it really depends on whether a) she likes candles and b) she knows the difference between a Jo Malone candle and an ordinary candle.

MerylStrop · 25/12/2011 23:39

I'd be very pleased. Lovely.

What does she want, the moon on a stick? (As my mother would say)

squeakytoy · 25/12/2011 23:40

I would love someone to buy me one of those.. I know how expensive they are, and I could never justify buying one for myself.

To be honest, if someone bought me one, I would never light it! Grin

butterfliesandladybirds · 25/12/2011 23:43

Thanks for that Figgy and OldSlag (surely you're not really!)

I'd be the most grateful SIL. in the world. What a lovely thought Butterflies.

TopazMortmain · 25/12/2011 23:46

If she does not want it you can send it over here Grin

butterfliesandladybirds · 25/12/2011 23:46

She does like candles but not sure if she does know it's not an ordinary one, but I am hoping she'd find out once she lights it! Love that saying Meryl!

squeakytoy · 25/12/2011 23:47

If she knows her candles, she will know what a Jo Malone one is.. and if she doesnt, she can always google it!

butterfliesandladybirds · 25/12/2011 23:55

Thanks Maras2. Seems the consensus is that's it's fine, thanks for that everyone.

They're lovely. Which fragrance did you buy?

I love Grapefruit and Lime Basil & Mandarin. I think your SIL would be very happy with it, whichever one you bought.

StealthPolarBear · 26/12/2011 00:02

what makes a JM candle better than a normal one?
(not criticising op, gneuinely don't know)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/12/2011 00:04

I'm a Yankee candle fan as well but JM candles are (to me), a purer fragrance, they're stronger and less 'waxy'. They are expensive but I've had candles just as expensive previously - and certainly not as good.

MayaAngelsFromTheRealmsOfCool · 26/12/2011 00:14

Why would it not seem enough? They are so expensive! I wouldn't expect a gift of this magnitude, cost-wise! Don't tie yourself in knots. I'm sure she'll love it, but if she's not happy, please send it to me Wink.

trulyscrumptious43 · 26/12/2011 00:31

I would be made up to receive one of those babies.
If she doesn't like it pm me for my address, I'd love it.

PercyFilth · 26/12/2011 00:32

I would be very disappointed if someone gave me a candle. Especially if they had wasted a lot of money on it. I can think of lots of things I'd rather have than an overpriced lump of wax. It's one of those Emperor's New Clothes things, IMO.

NoHunIntended · 26/12/2011 01:50

Well, looks like lots of people would appreciate one. Hope your SIL is one of them! Me, I'm with Percy, they seem hideously overpriced, for what they are.

poppycat04 · 26/12/2011 01:57

But Jo Malone stuff is amazing... I was a right old cynic too until DH bought me one. one of my best ever presents. A real luxury.

Mya2403 · 26/12/2011 02:44

Lovely gift Jo Malone candles are beautiful and luxurious.

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 02:58

You could add something to the message to make it more personable - "I loved the smell of this and I thought it would really go well in xx room, hope you get as much pleasure from it as I did choosing it! With love"

Makes it obvious that it wasn't a 'oh a candle will do' gift. Then when she lights it she'll understand!

CheerfulYank · 26/12/2011 03:16

I love candles and have heard that JM ones are fab.

I agree with whoever said it, presents should be lovely little things you want but wouldn't buy for yourself. IMHO, anyway! :)

Bloodymary · 26/12/2011 11:43

Ooh I would love a Jo Malone candle.

cairnterrier · 26/12/2011 11:46

I asked for a White Company candle from DH for all the reasons above. I love them but cannot justify buying them day to day so a perfect present!
