Disclaimer - Another MIL thread and I am 30 weeks pg and knackered from sleeping on dd's floor for most of the last 2 weeks. DD is 20 months and has a vague understanding of Xmas. History with PILS due to post birth issues and MILs ability to ignore/undermine me. They are sweet people though who love their family.

Just got out presses PILS left last weekend to put under tree next to fireplace with dd's little santa sack. MIL has done an enormous huge sack about 4 times the size of the Santa one I've done.

Feel like I've lost in a competition I didn't know I was in. Seriously who does a santa sack for someone else's kids? Did she think dd wouldn't have one?? That she needed another one? A GIANT one? Pissed off. She had her turn, my go at Xmas with my kids now. Mine looks shite in comparison.

Take them out the sack and spread them under the tree.

I'd take her presents out of the sack and give them to your children one at a time throughout the day. It will seem like less as they won't see the mound.

or put them(yours and theirs)all together.you both win.tell her it was very thoughtful of her to add to it or similar

But she is only 20 months she won't give a fig who they are from and will just think you are an amazing mummy for making all those presents appear in the morning.

Presents should look pretty under the tree, not be in sacks.

If MIL has bought lots of presents for your DD, that's not a problem (unless you can't fit them all in your house)

Then next year just totally outdo your mil .

DH thinks I'm being unreasonable about it so against taking them out of the sack. He's a bit sensitive about me vs his mum after months post dd's both so loathe to upset him on Xmas eve.

name - I know but it's going to be the first thing she notices and the only thing she'll want to look at in the morning and I want her to be excited about my santa effort :(

It's not the amount of presents I don't like (although I think it's ridiculous) but the fact it's in a frigging sack.

My mil also gets dc far too many presents which really annoys me as I don't want them getting materialistic and don't thick that is what Xmas is about. I wouldn't even think of competing. No point as would never win and seems to be teaching kids the wrong message. I've learned to just make a point of giving smaller gifts to dc and making the point that it presents are not the important thing.

I would be annoyed about this too. Actually there was another thread about it, I'll find it...

What's a Santa Sack?

Ahh, I had this three years ago.
DH even said there was no point us doing our own stockings.
Never really quite forgotten it.

Of course, DS (2.3 at the time), DD (3 mo) have entirely forgotton!

Just keep saying - they raised my DH they must have done something right and practise your silent screams in the bedroom. At this time of year there are so many going on dogs are probably in agony!

Well I've never even heard of "doing a Santa Sack"...it's just a bag of pressies. Take MILS out of the sack if you have a tradition of doing them. They look more impressve out on the floor anyhoo. If it's any comfort, DH and I pulled our horns in this year...only got each DD 7 presents...instad of 27...my Mum turned up with 3 binbags full of gifts for them!

So our more reasonable Christmas has turned into an orgy of toys again!

We had this last year, a HUGE sack filled to the top. I felt totally rubbish about my frugal little pile of gifts. dh/ I told mil in November that we wanted DD not to be spoilt as now she is a bit older she would start to expect a huge number of gifts. Mil took it well and I'm hoping listened to us (we'll see tomorrow)

don't sweat it this year. She's too young to notice. She'll probably get fed up of opening them all! Have a chat with her next autumn to prevent a repeat. She'll probably have calmed down by then and she'll have your new baby to buy for too which will help.

Like bandofmothers says, its just the bag she used to put the presents in.. nothing more. And at 20months, your daughter is not going to notice or compare sacks.

Turf out the stuff into a bag and call it a lucky dip. Each day this week, your kid puts her hand in and pulls out one to open.

We tend to open gifts over a period of a week or so. Can't be doing with all the rush on one day

My mum turned up with two sacks for each of my DCs, each with their picture on them. I know how you feel. But I can't say anything as it'll upset her and I know she's just excited.

i would say that a "santa sack" seems to have some meaning to you...or relevance...but to many people it'ss literally just a nice bag in which to deliver gifts...nothing more. I'm sure she meant nothing.

Put your stuff in her room, leave MILs downstairs. That way she sees yours first.
