My year has been totally shit, topped off by my DP cheating and being kicked out 6 months ago, my son had to go to special school, couldn't find him childcare so list my job (should be able to find one in new year that matches transport pick up/ drop off) so I'm totally alone this Christmas with DS (5) who has ASD and has never shown any understanding of Christmas. I was feeling so down I thought I'd give DS his presents in the morning, he'd open them and that would be it.

BUT

This morning I mumbled something to DS about someone coming tonight and he looked at me, eyes all lit up and said 'Father Christmas! Down the chimney!'
I have never been so happy in all my life. I bundled DS in the car to buy lots of Christmas booze, nibbles and chocolate last minute and he told everyone he passed in tesco 'father Christmas down the chimney, present!'

Now I am engaging in the big pre-Christmas day clean and am so looking forward to DS's first proper Christmas (that he understands)

I know I'm being totally unreasonable writing a post like this here but I'm so chuffed I couldn't care less!

SantaAteAllTheBiscuits · 24/12/2011 16:32

You've made me cry too. I hope you have a fabulous Christmas with your lovely boy

my ds2 is speech delayed and hasn't got many words at all but a few weeks ago he suddenly turned around and said 'Ho Ho' when he saw santa on tv. He's been saying it since and yesterday he kept running up to me with his hand cupped behind his ear, pointing at the ceiling saying 'Ho Ho, Ho Ho'

Heleninahandcart · 24/12/2011 16:36

Only read your OP (sorry) but that's wonderful! I also have a child (DS, aged 6) with ASD and have had an incredibly tough year - so I absolutely share your joy! Merry Christmas xxx

Very Happy Christmas to you & your ds. My ASD dd is 9. Only in the last couple of years has she been able to start to enjoy getting presents. I know just how thrilled you are feeling, so pleased for you.

Update!

I'm so excited that I'm jumping around the house singing Christmas songs so DS ate rudolphs carrot and spat it at me because I was interfering with Ben 10! Grin

He rang his daddy and made his Christmas too. So proud of my little man

Tears in my eyes too!

Thanks for posting such a positive, happy message for all of us reading MN on Christmas Eve! Hope you have a lovely Christmas with DS!

AmIthatbad · 24/12/2011 17:26

How lovely hanaka. For my 12 yo DD this is the first Christmas where she doesn't believe, but now that she knows it is me, I have been getting quizzed every day about where her presents are, how many there are, are they wrapped, over and over again.

One thing that does make me Blush and Smile is when she opens presents that were not things she specifically asked for. Because children with ASD are so literal and so honest, she actually says "Oh no, I didn't ask for this" or even " Aw, I don't like it". Luckily our family all know and love her and appreciate that she is only saying what she thinks.

I hope you have a lovely time opening Santa's pressies tomorrow Xmas Smile

hanaka88 · 24/12/2011 17:29
