I'm sure I read somewhere he had terribly bad breath too ...

I shold explain I've been dipping in and out of Teacher's Pet on TV (Doris Day and Clark Gable) Grin

Give me Yul Brynner/Steve McQueen/James Stewart etc. anyday!

Malificence - I'd imagine most of todays stars are squeaky clean compared to many of the stars of old.

sozzledchops · 21/12/2011 18:41

What - with Donald Sutherland? strange movie if I remember.

nativitywreck · 21/12/2011 18:47

It was a book by Nathanial West in the thirties, i think.

sozzledchops · 21/12/2011 18:52

Looking for a movie to drool over, Donald Sutherland does not make me drool.

Salmotrutta · 21/12/2011 18:57

With you there sozzled - doesn't have the "chiseled" good looks does he?Poor Donald.

Malificence Hollywood Babylon?

Fab books but not strictly accurate. It retold the myth of Fatty Arbuckle as a brutal rapist. Although there was no real evidence the book didnt really push that angle.

MrsRhettButler · 21/12/2011 19:05

I don't think he rapes her Confused

I have the book here if anyone needs a quote?

KatieScarlettsCrackers · 21/12/2011 19:07

about blimmin time too

Salmotrutta · 21/12/2011 19:15

Well - it's a long time since I read the book but as far as the film goes it was certainly portrayed as Rhett being "forceful" wasn't it?
Presumably so Scarlett could then be shown as having succumbed to hs charms Hmm
Horrible message isn't it?

Well she never actually says the word 'no'

It does say: "he swung her off her feet into his arms and started up the stairs. Her head was crushed against his chest and she heard the hard hammering of his heart beneath her ears. He hurt her and she cried out, muffled, frightened. Up the stairs he went in the utter darkness, up, up and she was wild with fear. He was a mad stranger and this was a black darkness she did not know, darker than death. He was like death, carrying her away in arms that hurt. She screamed, stifled against him and he stopped suddenly on the landing and turning her swiftly in his arms, bent over her and kissed her with a savagery and. Completeness that wiped out everything from her mind but the dark into which she was sinking and the lips on hers.he was shaking as though he stood in a strong wind, and his lips, travelling from her mouth downward to where the wrapper had fallen from her body, fell on her soft flesh. He wa muttering things she did not hear, his lips were evoking feelings never felt before. She was darkness and he was darkness and there had never been anything before this time, only darkness and his lips upon her.she tried to speak and his mouth was over hers again. Suddenly she had a wild thrill such as she had never known: joy, fear, madness, excitement, surrender to arms that were too strong, lips too bruising, fate that moved too fast. For the first time in her life she had met someone stronger than she, someone she could neither bully nor break, someone who was bullying and breaking her. Somehow her arms were around his neck and her lips trembling beneath his and they were going up, up into darkness again, a darkness that was soft and swirling and all enveloping"

Now this is all said after he says: "you turned me out on the town while you chased him, by God, this is one night when there are only going to be two in my bed"

inatrance · 21/12/2011 19:25

KatieScarlettsCrackers · 21/12/2011 19:35

MrsRhettButler · 21/12/2011 19:39

I did think it was that sort of aaah, I just did one myself.

Yes! Stellar! Oooh you do know the book well. It says "and she had gloried in it"

MrsRhettButler · 21/12/2011 19:40

As would I, of course.

For all who haven't read the book but like the film you really really should read it, it is sooo much better

Salmotrutta · 21/12/2011 19:43

There was a truly appalling sequel which was written a few years back.

Dire. Utterly dire.

MrsRhettButler · 21/12/2011 19:46

I have my version of the sequel in my head salmo!

MrsRhettButler · 21/12/2011 19:47

I it really that bad?

MrsRhettButler · 21/12/2011 19:47

*is

Salmotrutta · 21/12/2011 19:52

I can't remember.
Scarlett goes off to Ireland to find Rhett. And I think she prances around in Irish costume. And gets into trouble on account of being stupid somehow.
