to strategically 'forget' the little santas helper outfit MIL bought for xmas

We live in London and DH family live in north west we have a 3 month old DS. we are heading up to DH parents for xmas eve, xmas day and boxing day. We last went up to visit PIL about a month ago and MIL presented us with a little santas helper outfit for DS to wear at xmas. Both myself and DH think the outfit is hideous and really don't want him to have to wear it and look like a berk! (although I understand that other people may think he looks cute we just think he will look ridiculous). Anyway DH has suggested that we just 'forget' the outfit and leave it in London.

What do people think - I know it is a present bought with best intentions and I wonder whether to just put him in it very briefly at xmas to try and keep everyone happy - DH is dead against this and really doesn't want the little one to wear it.

WWYD?

How can a 3 month old look like a berk?

YABU and mean.

Crabapple99 · 20/12/2011 10:40

Let him wear it! it'll make his gran happy, and not hurt anyone. It least she is trying to do something nice, there ae a lot worseMILs on these pages.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:40

let him wear it - what harm can it do? Surely he'll be sick all down it within the hour anyway.

suzikettles · 20/12/2011 10:41

Take it. Dress him in it and once the photos have been taken and everyone's said "Awwwww", then you can announce that oh dear, leaky nappy and take him off to get changed.

Honour is satisfied Grin

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 10:42

I would let him wear it,hes 3 months old he won't mind

SinicalSanta · 20/12/2011 10:43

Ah , let him wear it, Mil would be delighted.
Anyway at 3 months he's bound to puke or do an explosive poo after half an hour, and you can put him in a outfit of your own choosing then.
And take photos (before the poo, obv!) and send them to her after Xmas, she'll treasure them.

PopcornMouseInAReindeerJumper · 20/12/2011 10:43

Let him wear it for a few hours, then strategically smear it with poo while changing his bum so he has to dress in 'normal' clothes for the rest of the trip :o

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2011 10:43

How mean

It wouldn't kill either of your to put it on the baby for a couple of hours

VeronicaSpeedwell · 20/12/2011 10:43

I'd have thought a quick showing would be much easier than any other approach. And there won't be any other occasions where it will be expected to appear.

GwennieF · 20/12/2011 10:43

I totallt agree - they're horrible and generally made out of really cheap fabric too... Could he not wear it very briefly... You could pretend he had a leaky nappy/brought up some milk/something similar, then change him into the normal, non-elfin outfit that he would have worn otherwise.

justcallmemummypig · 20/12/2011 10:44

take it, let him wear it and they can take photos, am sure at that age he can conviently make it dirty v. quickly!

SantasENormaSnob · 20/12/2011 10:44

I would let him wear it.

Bogeyface · 20/12/2011 10:45

Put it on him just before a feed.

Feed him, burp him, bemoan the fact that he has just possetted all over it and change him again. Job done.

I hate those outfits too, but sometimes you just have to suck it up, if only for the fact that you MIL will not blame your DH but you for forgetting it. You know she will....!

TimothyClaypoleLover · 20/12/2011 10:45

benne81 - I feel your pain. MIL bought DD a hideous dress for Christmas day knowing full well that I intend to buy her Christmas dress. Its grey and dull and makes her look like Orphan Annie. Am intending to put her in it briefly and encourage her to spill her dinner down it!!

BrianButterfield · 20/12/2011 10:45

I would put him in it - 4mo DS is currently in a Chief Elf outfit and looks v cute Xmas Grin

Haziedoll · 20/12/2011 10:47

Oh for goodness sake. Talk about pfb syndrome. Why are people so precious about what their children wear?

thepeoplesprincess · 20/12/2011 10:47

No, YANBU. Far better to stamp out any nonsense your MIL might have about buying stuff for her grandchild now, before it all gets out of hand and she starts buying him pyjamas next year.

Bloodymary · 20/12/2011 10:47

I would also let him wear it for a short while, then MIL the photographic evidence.

Sometimes Grannys can lose their heads when confronted with these things Xmas Smile

onadifferentplanettoday · 20/12/2011 10:47

Ds 2 and Ds 3 have bought a reindeer outfit for their 10 week old neice for Xmas,I am sure even if she hates it (actually I don't think she will) , my daughter in law will dress her in it for a little while to keep the ds' happy and none of us will get upset if she then gets changed into something else. Like others have said just let it have a quick showing to keep everyone happy.

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 10:48

Because the OP lives in London ,not the common North west I think

Bloodymary · 20/12/2011 10:48

send MIL

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:49

we dress our babies in bacofoil in the north west

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 20/12/2011 10:49

Poo smear plan is ace.

ShatnersBassoon · 20/12/2011 10:50

Aw, that's a bit mean-spirited. She'd love to see him in it, and it does no harm to anyone.
