to strategically 'forget' the little santas helper outfit MIL bought for xmas

We live in London and DH family live in north west we have a 3 month old DS. we are heading up to DH parents for xmas eve, xmas day and boxing day. We last went up to visit PIL about a month ago and MIL presented us with a little santas helper outfit for DS to wear at xmas. Both myself and DH think the outfit is hideous and really don't want him to have to wear it and look like a berk! (although I understand that other people may think he looks cute we just think he will look ridiculous). Anyway DH has suggested that we just 'forget' the outfit and leave it in London.

What do people think - I know it is a present bought with best intentions and I wonder whether to just put him in it very briefly at xmas to try and keep everyone happy - DH is dead against this and really doesn't want the little one to wear it.

WWYD?

Good for you op.

flamegirl77 · 20/12/2011 11:26

We have a hand me down little pudding outfit, it's lovely thick cotton and big enough to last until April Grin

merrymum · 20/12/2011 11:26

DH's Nan presented our DD2 with a "lovely" dress (frills, lace + lots of pink) for her 1st Christmas, she was 1 month old, she was so pleased that she had been able to get out and choose it herself....we dressed her in it to visit and told her how lovely it was, she was so chuffed, then we just changed her again when we got home, no harm done, and 1 very Happy Great Nan!

Angelswings · 20/12/2011 11:27

Yuk, I hate those outfits, it's not PFB, I wouldn't dress my youngest in that.

Forget to pack it.....

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 20/12/2011 11:29

Oh pull the Holly bush out of your arse woman, it's only a bit of fun.

I wish I'd dressed mine up more when they were too small to protest [fear]

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 20/12/2011 11:29

Ahem. Xmas Sad

There are some family battles worth fighting. This isn't one of them. As many others have said, the chance of this outfit surviving more than an hour or so without being sicked on or shat over is so remote as to forget one's style principles and just do the nice thing.

Is it so difficult to please the poor, deluded pils? It isn't as if you are likely to be seen by anyone in the London Mummy Mafia while at your pils so your frightful lapse in taste won't have utterly fearful consequences.

bonkersLFDT20 · 20/12/2011 11:40

Ho ho ho. Come back in about 13 years time asking for advice on how to get your teenage son NOT to wear the jeans which show his pants when visiting his Gran!

Sigh...now I want a little outfit for my 2 year old Xmas Envy

NoWuckingFurries · 20/12/2011 14:55

manatee Xmas Grin great minds and all that!

It is easier to just suck it down to keep the peace although I love to dress up my baby

No need to be a berk about it Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

kelly2000 · 20/12/2011 15:01

Let him wear it. He is not a fashion model, and it will make MIL very happy and he will not notice or not. lets face it fashion wise, nappies, and romper suits are not a good look either, so an elf outfit is neither here nor there.

Serenitysutton · 20/12/2011 15:11

WTF? Berk is an alternative spelling of the Irish (org French)surname Burke/ bourke/ buerk- ie being a stupid Irishman. Like paddy goes into the pub....

Berkshire hunt, honestly.

Babies do look stupid in those outfits but I think you might have to suck it up this once

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 15:38

Yabu baby's don't look like idiots because they are dressed in Santas little helper outfits

What will you do when he decides he wants to go to nursery dressed spiderman? Tell him no you will look like an idiot

TwelveGaysOfChristmas · 20/12/2011 15:42

Um...

If it's the one from ASDA then I have the exact same outfit for my DS. We went to get pictures done in Max Spielmann on Saturday and we now have an absolutely gorgeous set of photos and a CD with the images we wanted on. He looks like an absolute angel - you can click my profile to see the photo if you want. I'm about to upload it.

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 15:43

Where I come from berk means stupid or idiot

FahQuenelleItsNearlyChristmas · 20/12/2011 15:44

TwelveGays your profile isn't clickable.

FrothingBeserker · 20/12/2011 15:45

oh fgs. it's an outfit for a 3 month old. are you really trying to say he always looks impeccably dressed in tasteful, coordinating shades at all other times?

my MIL bought a new dress for dd1 for her Christening. and presented it saying 'I didn't think you'd think to buy one, so just wanted to make sure she had something nice to wear' - wtf?! dd1 was 6 months old (late Christening Blush) and yes, mostly wore dungarees and babygros.

we had bught her an amazing dress, btw - really lovely. but we dressed her in the horror frock MIL had bought, and got on with the day. because Granny being thanked properly for her thoughts was more important that what dress dd1 wore on her Christening day, tbh.

get over yourself, OP. it's Christmas - cheer granny up and let her see her grandson in the cute outfit.

yellowraincoat · 20/12/2011 15:45

This is because you live in London, isn't it?

As soon as I moved to London, everything bar drinking cocktails, being thin and wearing plastic-lensed NHS glasses became deeply horrible to me.

It's sad, but just tell yourself you're being ironic and it'll all be fine.

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 15:50

can't seem to click on you twelve , I've seen a realy cute one in mothercare

TwelveGaysOfChristmas · 20/12/2011 15:53

It won't let me become clickable!! I've tried setting it to public but it just won't work! Hang on, am uploading them to Photobucket so everyone can have a good aww! at them.

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 15:53

Twelve he looks so cute, I'm going to buy one for ds3

eurochick · 20/12/2011 15:54

YADBU. Humour her. I think babies look adorable in pumpkin/rudolf/snowman outfits anyway. And if you don't agree you will not only keep your MIL happy, you will have some wonderful photos to embarrass you pfb with when he brings girlfriends home at some point in the future.

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 15:54

I managed to click on it, how old is he

TwelveGaysOfChristmas · 20/12/2011 15:55

Try this link right here

And this one too

TwelveGaysOfChristmas · 20/12/2011 15:56

He's 5 months today. And he's the light of my life. Been struggling with PND for a while but him and his photos are making me so happy!

Moominsarescary · 20/12/2011 15:59

Bless, he's sitting well for 5 months, I thought he was around the same age as ds3 who is 9 months, although he's probably abit small as he was 8 weeks prem

Hope the PND gets easier for you
