to strategically 'forget' the little santas helper outfit MIL bought for xmas

We live in London and DH family live in north west we have a 3 month old DS. we are heading up to DH parents for xmas eve, xmas day and boxing day. We last went up to visit PIL about a month ago and MIL presented us with a little santas helper outfit for DS to wear at xmas. Both myself and DH think the outfit is hideous and really don't want him to have to wear it and look like a berk! (although I understand that other people may think he looks cute we just think he will look ridiculous). Anyway DH has suggested that we just 'forget' the outfit and leave it in London.

What do people think - I know it is a present bought with best intentions and I wonder whether to just put him in it very briefly at xmas to try and keep everyone happy - DH is dead against this and really doesn't want the little one to wear it.

WWYD?

Oh just let him wear it a bit
Have a bit of joy for goodness sake

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 20/12/2011 10:53

I love those outfits.
I dressed DD in one with matching hat and musical bootees and mittens for her first Christmas.
We still have it, 10 years later and her bear factory monkey weasr it now.

It won't hurt to put it on him to make your MIL smile.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 20/12/2011 10:54

I think in this instance your MIL's happiness is a bit more important than whether your baby looks a 'berk' in a Christmas outfit although how a 3 month old can look a berk in anything is beyond me

Ticklemonster2 · 20/12/2011 10:54

My ds wore one last Xmas, but we changed him at lunch as he was too hot.
I would let him wear it for a bit and then change him. It's all part of the Christmas spirit x

namechangerbat · 20/12/2011 10:56

What haziedoll said.

Hmm
ShatnersBassoon · 20/12/2011 10:56

Until a baby can decide make decisions, hold a reasonable conversation and become continent, a naff outfit is the least of their worries when avoiding looking like a 'berk' Xmas Grin

Megatron · 20/12/2011 10:59

Aw she was trying to do something nice! Just put it on him, take the pics then put the poo plan into place. Done.

NoWuckingFurries · 20/12/2011 11:00

Also, I think YABU for using 'berk' to describe your 3mo. You do realise that it is a shortened version of Berkshire Hunt, which is rhyming slang for an insult which most people find very offensive.

benne81 · 20/12/2011 11:00

Oi usual suspect both myself and my husband are from the north west and live in London. I certainly wasn't making any north 'common' comments or insinuations - so wind your neck in please.

Thanks folks an hour in the outfit will be done to keep MIL happy (DH will just have to lump it)

YABU agree a baby can't look a berk. I take it this is your first?

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 11:01

Grin berkshire hunt

thedogwalker · 20/12/2011 11:01

Oh you should enjoy this time of the year and join in with the Christmas spirit, I think all babies look adorable in those outfits, (My DS wore Santa last year at 4mo and this year he is Santa's little helper). It will cheer up your PILs no end and if you still don't like it, then an accident in the nappy isn't a bad idea and you can then change him. Have a great time, its not too grim up north you know Xmas Grin

namechangerbat · 20/12/2011 11:02

I bloody LOVE how PFB people get. Hahahah

Believe it or not - you may actually enjoy photos of him in it in years to come. When DS was 10 months old he had some photos taken at nursery in a daft Santa hat, but he's giggling his head off. At the time I though how naff, but every year when they come out of the Christmas box they make me smile,.... and him cringe in embarrassment :o

Jennyrosity · 20/12/2011 11:06

Put him in it, take photos, then use them as blackmail material when he's a teenager and desperate to look cool Grin

AFuckingFestiveKnackeredWoman · 20/12/2011 11:09

Babies are made for dressing up!

NoWuckingFurries · 20/12/2011 11:09

I didn't realise what it meant for years until I got told by an aged relative! Xmas Blush

Also, how else do you get embarrassing pictures of your children to show their first boyfriend/girlfriend or at their wedding etc if you don't dress them up? BTW DS will be a reindeer. And then Father Christmas. And possibly a Christmas pudding. (Relatives have bought a few outfits this year) Xmas Grin

zipzap · 20/12/2011 11:11

If you've got a nice Christmas outfit that you've got for your ds decide which time slot is likely to get most wear out of an outfit and keep your outfit for then, 'save' their outfit for the timeslot when your dc is likely to get it dirty/pooey/ruined the soonest. And if eating in it, don't bother to put a bib on so it gets extra spoiled.

Then keep referring to your outfit as your ds's proper special Christmas outfit and maybe your mil will get the message that you get to choose your ds's clothes especially for special occasions.

I do think it is cheeky of people (often grandparents) to think that they can buy 'special' outfits for big occasions - they've already had their go, it's the parents turn!

Quenelle · 20/12/2011 11:12

I'm glad you've changed your mind. You'll make an old lady happy at Christmas and can reap your reward in babysitting hours in the future.

DeckTheHugeWithBoughsOfManatee · 20/12/2011 11:16

OP, did you know that 'berk' is rhyming slang for 'Berkshire Hunt', as in cunt?

Are you sure you meant to say your 3mo looks like a berk? Xmas Grin

DeckTheHugeWithBoughsOfManatee · 20/12/2011 11:17

ah, whoops, x posted with someone else Xmas Grin

Lauzifer · 20/12/2011 11:18

So far i've dressed my 9 month old pfb as a pumpkin, a reindeer and an elf. She will be getting a pink fluffy bunny outfit for easter and i once stuck a fake mustache onto her dummy. This is all for my pleasure of course and for photos to show her future boyfriends.

Actually thinking about it i'm probably a really cruel mother Blush

duckdodgers · 20/12/2011 11:18

Still dont know how any sane normal person could possibly think a 3 month old baby in a Santa outfitcould look like a berk!!
