I work for myself :-)

I design a range of handmade homewear and gifts.
Not exactly what I imagined doing when I studied history and politics but I love it.

Good hours and baby friendly.

Nownameless · 19/12/2011 00:18

Paediatric Speech and language therapist. Great job and easy to work part time or privately.

Tidybush · 19/12/2011 00:20

I'm a Practice Manager for a group of GP surgeries and I love it. Only went into it this year, having spent 10 yrs in the voluntary sector.

Moominsarescary · 19/12/2011 01:00

I trained as a stylist ( why the couldn't just say hairdresser) and worked in a few well known salons, hated it so gave it up and worked in nursing homes for 10 years as a hca before training to be a mh nurse. I have one year of training left but need to do it next year which doesn't look possible so not sure what to do instead, maybe something in mh or drug and alcohol

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 19/12/2011 06:59

Journalist, I really enjoy it.

people have some, understandably, skewed ideas about my profession.

However, we are in the main, responsible, intelligent, caring people, and in my paper devote our lives to telling people eveything that's happening in their town, from schools shows to murder cases, break-ins to golden weddings. It's the variety I like.

Alouisee · 19/12/2011 07:00

Getorf Dh and I worked at Liffe - I still have a jacket in the loft, you can wear it at the next meet up and do tricky hand signals!

Animal psychology? My dog is so naughty no one would take me seriously Xmas Wink

wonkylegs · 19/12/2011 07:02

Architect - wouldn't recommend it at current time (sooooo many redundancies, & abysmal pay for those of us left ) and it takes a minimum of 7yrs to qualify but I still love it most of the time.

emmyloo2 · 19/12/2011 07:05

Lawyer here. Inhouse with gold mining company. Stressful but I love my job.

Alouisee · 19/12/2011 07:12

WonkyLegs my step dad is an Architect, he says the same as you. I feel so angry that the pay is so disproportionate to the amount of time that is spent at university and the importance of the work that you do.

spottyscarf · 19/12/2011 07:22

OP, have you thought about working for an exam board or going into educational publishing? I used to work for an exam board as an editor and a lot of the staff were ex-teachers, in fact for many jobs it was a requirement!

SirSugar · 19/12/2011 07:40

Hairdresser, and specialise in design and fitting of natural hair repalcement ( wigs to you ). Have shop where we sell clothes, products do hairdressing and I design wigs; sounds odd mix but works

RustyBear · 19/12/2011 07:46

I qualified as a librarian after my degree and worked as one for about 10 years pre-children. Then I was a SAHM until the children went to school, when I thought of going back into libraries, but in our area it meant working three Saturdays out of four. I'm glad I didn't now as our borough has got rid of most of their qualified librarians and are using unqualified staff and volunteers now.

Anyway I started volunteering at the children's schools (infant & junior) and was eventually offered a part time TA job at the junior school, which eventually got converted into my current job as IT support manager, mainly because I knew how to unfreeze a computer with CTRL-Alt-DEL!

I now manage about 100 computers and laptops of varying ages and a lot of other equipment, support IT lessons and children using technology in other lessons, create resources, maintain the website, take photos of school events, manage our online resources and quite a lot else. It's not as well paid as a teacher, but not as stressful either.

I'm fairly unusual among primary school support staff in working a full time week during term time - 20 or 25 hours is more usual. I do enjoy the holidays, (especially right now when all the rest of the family is going out to work this frosty morning and I'm still tucked up in bed MNing on the iPad) but of course they are unpaid.

But now the DC are both working, though still living at home, I'm beginning to find the summer holidays a bit long, so next year I might see if I can find a holiday job (though as our new head has just announced he wants a new website, I'll probably end up spending the summer working at setting that up!)

FanjoForTheReindeerJumper · 19/12/2011 07:50

I am a dental receptionist, don't do it unless you like dealing with grumpy people and sometimes grumpy dentists and trying to keep everyone happy!

FanjoForTheReindeerJumper · 19/12/2011 07:51

(however I quite enjoy it)

verycherry · 19/12/2011 07:54

A&E sister, can be stressful but I really, really love my job. No ideas what you could do OP but am struck by the number of teachers on here who are not happy/enjoying their jobs.

MarchelineWhatNot · 19/12/2011 07:55

I am a PA and I hate it. I wish I could retrain as a teacher, alas at 47 I am too old Sad
