To think MIL is out of order calling DD a 'little shit'

It was DDs 2nd birthday at the weekend, she had a lovely day at the farm, then a sleep and then PIL were coming round afterwards to bring a cake and presents.
DD was still very tired when I woke her up, but I don't like to let her sleep much past 4pm just incase it affects her bedtime. She also takes a while to come round after her nap, and likes to sit quietly on my lap for a while before getti g down to play.
So on this afternoon, they are obviously excited to see her on her birthday, and kept trying to get her to dance, open presents etc I explained she was still really tired but they didn't stop, so DD ended up getting grumpy.
Half hour later FIL announces that he can't stand Whingey kids and is leaving, so MIL went too.
Today when she came round, she asked how DD was and said "she was a little shit on Saturday" Shock AIBU to think that's a horrible way to talk about your 2yr old GD or am I being over sensitive? Its not like she was being naughty, she was tired after a long day!

Yanbu that's a horrible way to talk about a baby, especially their own granddaughter! I'm Angry for you.

Iggly · 14/12/2011 16:12

Is your MIL the swearing all the time type? What did you say?

I think YANBU as DS is the same (same age too) and I would have pulled MIL up on it if I were you.

DeckTheHallsWithPopcornMice · 14/12/2011 16:13
Shock
Winkly · 14/12/2011 16:13

That's a horrible way to talk about any two year old. Its also completely unreasonable of them to expect a tired groggy child to perform on demand, do they get out of bed in the morning and dance at the breakfast table? I bet they don't. YANBU and I would be cross if I were you.

ThisIsANickname · 14/12/2011 16:13

"Really? I thought you bother were being great big shits. I guess it's just a matter of perspective."

biddysmama · 14/12/2011 16:13

thats horrible, you should have replied with "yeah but thats because you were an annoying bitch"

Abso fucking lutely and I would be telling your MIL not to describe her as such and that if they can't give her a little space to wake up properly without getting in her face then perhaps they should piss off home instead.
I hate it when adults don't treat kids with a little respect - can't imagine they would enjoy being woken up earlier than they would wish and then have people demand they perform like an animal in a zool.

jan36 · 14/12/2011 16:14

YADNBU. They're the ones behaving like toddlers!

Eglu · 14/12/2011 16:14

YANBU what a horrendous phrase to use. I would have told her that she was not a little shit and you did tell them to let her wake up.

MabelLucyAttwell · 14/12/2011 16:15

How did you reply?

BreadCrumbsandButterBeans · 14/12/2011 16:16

Vile. YANBU.

andaPontyinaPearTreeeeee · 14/12/2011 16:20

What the... Seriously?!? You don't actually need to ask do you?

Even what FIL said about whiney kids was bad enough. Rude.

Did you/will you call them on it? They cannot get away with talking about your little girl like that.

DeckTheHugeWithBoughsOfManatee · 14/12/2011 16:27

I wonder how cheery your MIL would be if someone asked her to dance around and be cute for an audience a few minutes after waking up. Hmm

SantasStrapon · 14/12/2011 16:30

5am wake up call for them in the morning. Preferably via Skype. Get them to do a quick rendition of Singing In the Rain, then berate them for forgetting the brollies.

Cunts.

Goolash · 14/12/2011 16:30

I think you should call her up at 6am and demand that she sings "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands ..." down the phone to you all.

Gonzo33 · 14/12/2011 16:32

I would have old her she was tired and that is why she was the way she was, and then asked her what her excuse was for being so rude but I hate my mil

TardlyWhiptrack · 14/12/2011 16:32

Call her at 6 am tomorrow and bellow down the phone 'DANCE, YOU BIG OLD SHIT, DANCE!! DANCE I TELL YOU!! YOU DARE TO FAIL TO ENTERTAIN?

BoffinMum · 14/12/2011 16:32

She sounds like a big shit.
I know which type of shit I would prefer.

BaublesandCuntingCarolSingers · 14/12/2011 16:33

YANBU

Your FIL sounds like a miserable old bastard as well.

pigletmania · 14/12/2011 16:33

yanbu that was way out of order. Mirror what others have said, do they perform and do little dances when they have just woken up, don't think so!

pigletmania · 14/12/2011 16:34

tardlywhiptrack Grin good plan

NewShooz · 14/12/2011 16:34

I think they look at her like she's a performing seal sometimes!

I replied 'she was tired, I told you that. It takes her a while to wake up properly in the afternoon'
MIL 'but it was only us here'
Me 'I know, but she doesn't like being fussed over when she wakes up...like a lot of adults don't first thing in the morning. FIL didn't even say goodbye, he just walked off'
MIL chuckles 'ah well you know what he's like'
Me 'well she was fine after you left anyway' Grin

I'm so annoyed at myself that i didnt tell her not to call my DD that, but I'm the worlds biggest wimp face to face. I need to grow a backbone Sad And yes I also though FIL was rude saying that too. He swears quite a bit, but I wouldn't say she does.
