Awful isn't it.

Maybe he's hoping his original will be rereleased and do really well like Bikky last year...

weblette · 12/12/2011 18:44

Bikky WTF Biffy

MenopausalHaze · 12/12/2011 18:44

Well why shouldn't he? And how, exactly, is it actively ruining your life?

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 12/12/2011 18:45

WHat was he thinking?
This>>>>>>> $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

RedBlanket · 12/12/2011 18:46

Apparently you don't need permission to do a straight cover of a song. Its understood that royalties will be paid to the writer.

vic77en · 12/12/2011 18:47

Royalties?

Flisspaps · 12/12/2011 18:48

I liked Marcus's version last night, not keen on the Little Mix version that we're unfortunately going to have thrust down our ears at every opportunity :(

weblette · 12/12/2011 18:56

Biffy Clyro wrote the song that was used by Matt Cardle.

Ahem

MrsWifty · 12/12/2011 18:59

He's posted on Facebook to say the writer has no say in who covers their song, as long as the lyrics are the same and other conditions are met. He does get royalties though. Doesn't say he objects mind you. Nice Christmas present for him.

ViviPrudolf · 12/12/2011 19:00

drippy song whoever sings it

brandysoakedbitch · 12/12/2011 19:07

It is amusing that you imagine he actually cares as he is counting the £'s - yes I bet he is gutted. He can make a pithy comment about not be able to choose who covers it but I reckon he really couldn't give a toss.

flipflop77 · 12/12/2011 19:10

no it's not actively ruining my life, but there are few things nowadays that i thought were above the whole money/fame/exposure thing and i maybe had attributed him with a certain integrity...

I actually cried. I love "O" the album (Eskimo is amazing) and I am glad to see that Damien hasn't sold his soul to the devil.

I was also Shock to see Leona Lewis covering Hurt by Johnny Cash. She totally, utterly ruined it and I really hope it bombs big style. Johnny Cash's version is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Familyguyfan · 12/12/2011 19:15

Hurt was originally by Nine Inch Nails, not JC, although his version was amazing!

diabolo · 12/12/2011 19:19

Familyguyfan I knew Johnny Cash's version was a cover - must check out the original, thanks for that.

NoobyNoob · 12/12/2011 19:35

Totally agree - I loved Cannonball, now I wince when I hear the XFactor version it on the radio.

diabolo I totally agree with you about Eskimo! Amazing stuff, another fav is Delicate. It's my bath music :)

Winkly · 12/12/2011 19:58

My mate FB posted that he must feel like the bloke in Indecent Proposal, letting another man pay him a million dollars to shag his wife. :)

TeamDamon · 12/12/2011 20:00

The worst one was Alexandra Burke murdering covering Hallelujah but this runs a close second...

flipflop77 · 12/12/2011 20:07

Damien Rice is not Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen- I'm sure he is well aware of what will happen giving Cannonball to XFactor, I cant understand it. Money HAS to be the only motivation, and maybe naively, I thought he was more more an artist than that.

OP posts:
Ciske · 12/12/2011 20:18

I quite like Leona's version of Hurt, although the lyrics are of course way out of character for her. But then again, a singer is like an actor, you don't have to live it yourself to make it real for others.

Not like Alexandra Burke who managed to drain every bit of life out of Hallelujah. Angry

NoWayNoHow · 12/12/2011 20:27

Asked DH the same question. All we can think is that he's a bit poor and thought this might be a double victory - (a) he's going to make a killing out of the royalties from the sale of Little Mix's version, and (b) he's going to make a killing from all the X Factor haters out there who will buy his original version in yet another attempt to derail the Christmas Number 1.

Sounds like a winning plan to me!
