Another vote for vile, mysoginist garbage. I've lived all over the country and "walk of shame" has always meant after a one night stand etc, not just some random party. Yuck, what were they thinking.

PeppermintPasty · 12/12/2011 14:23

aaagh misogynist!!!!

seasidesister · 12/12/2011 14:25

This ad looks like something from the 1980s. Its dated. Its odd. It doesnt make me want to buy a dress from HN.

daenerysstormborn · 12/12/2011 14:35

"The gold one doesnt look posh at all to me...she looks like a scouse girl"

what exactly do you mean by she looks like a scouse girl??

MistleTobyLeWolef · 12/12/2011 14:40

Did they look ashamed and regretful when they went out in the evening in those clothes then?

I always forget I have to pander to the pedants. What I meant, as I'm sure you know, and as I said in an earlier comment, was that the 'shame' part of 'walk of shame' is about being ashamed to be wandering around at 8am in what is clearly your party dress from last night.

So the point in the advert is that the lady in the supposedly better dress at the end looked unashamed because her dress took her effortlessly from 8pm to 8am. Or some such.

SardineQueen · 12/12/2011 14:45

That's not the message I get from it at all, mistle

hackmum · 12/12/2011 14:49

I've never heard the phrase "walk of shame" so that one flew straight past me.

In fact, I was quite enjoying the ad till the phrase flashed up, and then it seemed slightly unpleasant.

I guess what the ad is trying to do is get us all to identify with the first batch of girls, not point and laugh at them. We're supposed to think, "Oh, I've done that, ha ha." But I couldn't help wondering why they didn't have coats with them. Surely nobody goes out in December dressed like that without a coat unless they're Geordies? And I bet it doesn't make anybody go out and buy something from Harvey Nicks either.

Alouisee · 12/12/2011 14:49

Thats what i get MistleToby - I also think that Marks and Spencer could have made that advert but it wouldn't have attracted such negativity.

SardineQueen · 12/12/2011 14:53

The other point is that it is not about one interpretation being "wrong" and another "right".

Some people think it's funny
Some people think it's crap
Some people think it's sexist
Some people think it's classist
Some people don't like it as to them "walk of shame" means one night stand and it seems to be having a go at women having one night stands unless they're posh
Some people see it as a combination

None of us know what the intention of the advertiser was, what was in their mind when they made it. Even if their intention was for it to be funny, the fact is that an awful lot of people hate it for one reason or another. However given that "any publicity is bad publicity" maybe that was the intention. Ad people are not stupid - they will have realised all the different interpretations and decided to make it anyway.

SardineQueen · 12/12/2011 14:54

any publlicity is good publicity (whoops!)

Francagoestohollywood · 12/12/2011 14:59

The walk of shame... not a big deal for those who wear a coat...

Alouisee · 12/12/2011 15:05

Perhaps the subliminal message is "wear a coat" Xmas Wink

Francagoestohollywood · 12/12/2011 15:08

Exactly!!!

daenerysstormborn · 12/12/2011 15:10

but the girl at the end isn't wearing a coat either, so how can that be the message Confused

SolidGoldStockingFilla · 12/12/2011 16:23

It would have worked much better if a) there had been blokes stumbling home with sick down their shirts as well and b) the punchline had been 'buy a nice coat from our clothes shop'. Or indeed 'buy our nice shoes that don't hurt!'
But one of the Rule 101s of Ethical SLuthood is that you always have a coat or some sort of coverup, as well as wetwipes, a condom and a toothbrush, so you can go home feeling comfy and looking reasonable.

carocaro · 12/12/2011 16:26

My DH used to work at HN's Knightsbridge (15 years ago) and he said some of the rich customers were such rude dismissive fuckers, having £££ made them think they were up and above beyond the general public scum. So the women at the end of the add could be a right elitest biatch.

carocaro · 12/12/2011 16:29

The posh dress is floaty and covers he boobs all the others are short with boobs on show a go go - they are clearly making a point. But they do sell boob showing a go go dresses in HN's too!

JamieComeHome · 12/12/2011 16:35

The fact that so many of us are

a) misinterpreting the intention of the advertiser
b) doing so in such a way as to find it offensive
c) don't identify with it, or find it funny

suggests it's Not A Very Good Advert.

whoneedssleepanyway · 12/12/2011 16:42

Don't all advertisers imply that the product they are advertising makes you more beautiful/ successful/ happier etc etc [insert approporiate adjective]

This particular advertisement may be doing this more overtly and blatantly but I don't think it is any more offensive that any advertisement that implies if you use their product your life will improve for the better.

I think people are being hugely over-sensitive about this, yes maybe it is slightly poor taste but it is quite funny.

The fact that it has generated a 13 page thread on here implies to me that it is a very good advertisement as it has got people talking about it....

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 12/12/2011 16:45

solid just one condom, you say ? Xmas Wink

nativitywreck · 12/12/2011 16:54

M and S would nevah make that ad.

Francagoestohollywood · 12/12/2011 16:58

I don't like the ad, btw. As much as I'd like a shopping day in HN.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 12/12/2011 17:00

Just what I was about query, AF Xmas Grin.

Jellykat · 12/12/2011 17:17

Solid AND a pair of clean knicks don't forget! Xmas Wink

mathanxiety · 12/12/2011 17:19

A truly vile ad. The point was that the women in the tight dresses with the drooping shoulders and the shoes that hurt them looked like sluts compared to the woman in the shifty thing who has obviously been engaging in some higher class hanky panky..
