AIBU to be worried stupid about our kitten?

We took on two rescue kittens (now 6 months old) about 7 weeks ago - they are absolutely lovely. They were both neutered/speyed about 10 days ago and are doing fine. We have been letting them go outside whilst we were at home for about the last 5 days. They have been going for a potter and then coming in within the hour. Tonight we popped out for a drink and let them go outside when we went as they were both crying at the door. We were gone about an hour and when we came home the little boy kitten came to greet us. But his lovely sister is nowhere to be seen. She's been gone about 4 hours now which is unheard of for her as she's a timid little girl.

We've called and called her but she hasnt come back. Am now worrying about foxes as she is quite small despite her age Sad and we live in woodland.

Can anyone cheer me up and tell me she will come home? Our last three cats all lived to be very elderly so its been many years since we have had to fret over a kitten. I'd forgotten how worrying it is when they go awol....

Put the boy back out, and keep an eye on him would my advice. If she is hiding anywhere, she will see him and come out to him.

WorraLiberty · 27/11/2011 00:17

Oh it is a worry but I'm sure she'll be fine.

I used to have cats years ago and I always found the females are more adventurous than the males when it comes to staying out.

My male cat was fat and lazy and loved the warmth of home, but his Mum could wander for hours and stay out all night Smile

Are they chipped?

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 27/11/2011 00:18

Get out there, sit out there talking gently, open a tin of food or rattle dry food, and then sit there and listen quietly for any mewing. Be patient and alert. Like squeaky says, have the other kitten around.

stinkyfluffycat · 27/11/2011 00:19

Rattle a box of treats or open a can of tuna at the back door? Hope she's back soon!

AgentZigzag · 27/11/2011 00:29

She's just off having a poke about outside and I'm sure will be totally fine Smile

Four hours is nowt.

TheFrogs · 27/11/2011 00:36

I dont know if its the norm, but ive had lots of cats and the females I find, love going off to hunt.

The males just tend to sit on the sofa, snoring and getting in the way.

She may well be back soon with a "gift" Grin

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 00:48

Thank you for the reassuring words everyone Thanks

I've been sitting in the garden with Gordon (the little boy kitten) on my knee, whilst shaking some Go cat Grin. The neighbours probably think I've gone mad...

DH has been out looking for her too but he's buggered off to bed now and I think I might give up for tonight. Its not cold here which is a good thing (her side is shaved from her operation) but its really windy so maybe that has spooked her. We've had her chipped Worra, so if she is picked up then hopefully we will be reunited.

Poor Gordon hasnt ever gone to bed without his sister, they normally sleep all entwined Sad

I demand to know why you only have a photo of a dog with their head buried in the snow on your profile folly!

If you have kittens, it's in the talk guidelines that you have to have a photos of them up

TheFrogs · 27/11/2011 00:58

aw, he'll be ok...give him something fluffy. Mine will sit for hours drooling on snuggling a blanket.

nicm · 27/11/2011 01:03

:( hope she turns up soon! Our cat disappears for hours sometimes, but is normally back by morning looking fed.

:)

Crabapple99 · 27/11/2011 08:04

Is she back yet? Ours vanished for three days the first time he went out. He's never done that sagian though

JingleAllTheSoddingWay · 27/11/2011 08:11

Is she back yet?

One of our cats went missing for 3/4 days once, we where just starting to lose hope that she would come home when she casually strolled in the house like nothing had happened. Turns out she'd been up the local farm. After that she would regularly disappear up there for days at a time. The farmer said he quite enjoyed having her around.

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 08:32

Sad Still no sign of her. She's just so tiny; have had adult cats go missing before - in fact I had a serial 'disappearer' - but never one this little. Gordon has just set off on a search and rescue mission, hopefully he will find her.

Forgot to say that at one point another big bruiser of a cat came into our garden when we were calling her, so maybe he had scared her too.

Oh I dunno, its so easy to think of a million things that could have happened when they disappear isnt it? The only good thing is that there are hardly any cars where we are so its very unlikely that something like that has happened.

My cats done this before, she disappeared for 2 days once. They like to go for a big explore sometimes but they know where theres food and a cozy bed. I know its horrible but really try not to worry, she'll be back soon.

HeadsRollingInTheAisles · 27/11/2011 08:49

Does she have a collar on / is microchipped? If not I would call the local emergency vets (because weekend) just to check.

MrsDanverclone · 27/11/2011 08:49

Hopefully she will be back soon, carrying a dead offering to leave in your bed. The call of the quilt/sofa/dog's head, will hopefully persuade her to wander home soon.

ZeldaUpNorth · 27/11/2011 08:49

Do you have neighbours? My 7 month old kitten got out one night and she didnt come home, was worrying all night but i think she may of got into my neighbours house (unnoticed) and spent the night there?

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 08:54

She is chipped Heads. I dont think we'll call the vet - she didnt disappear until after dark yesterday evening and where we live is isolated so no-one would have seen her if she was in trouble. She's got an appointment at the vet tomorrow to have her stitches out so we can always ask then Sad

It is possible she is in a neighbours as they are in and out a lot, but she is really shy so I'd be surprised. Poor little Rosie.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 27/11/2011 09:00

That's the sort of calling I do for my two boys if they don't come back the minute I open the back door.

careergirl · 27/11/2011 09:45

could she have got shut in somewhere? Barn, shed, garage?

Thruaglassdarkly · 27/11/2011 09:53

My friend's 10 week old kittens went AWOL when he was on holiday and his MIL was supposed to be looking after them. They turned up after about 24 hours though. Hope she comes back soon.

DuffyMoon · 27/11/2011 10:32

aww fingers crossed for you :(

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 27/11/2011 11:17

Knock at all the neighbours houses.....make them check sheds.....could someone have took her in

peggotty · 27/11/2011 11:24

Is she back yet? She may well have got spooked by something (wind, maybe? or another cat if she's new to neighbourhood there'll be territirial disputes going on) and is hiding somewhere, especially if she's not been going outside for long. She may well hunker down somewhere until it's dark and she feels safe to come out Smile. I hope she comes home soon!

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 11:24

Will go round to the neighbours shortly. We did have a cat who had been shut in a neighbour's shed for 5 days so it is possible I guess.
