AIBU to be worried stupid about our kitten?

We took on two rescue kittens (now 6 months old) about 7 weeks ago - they are absolutely lovely. They were both neutered/speyed about 10 days ago and are doing fine. We have been letting them go outside whilst we were at home for about the last 5 days. They have been going for a potter and then coming in within the hour. Tonight we popped out for a drink and let them go outside when we went as they were both crying at the door. We were gone about an hour and when we came home the little boy kitten came to greet us. But his lovely sister is nowhere to be seen. She's been gone about 4 hours now which is unheard of for her as she's a timid little girl.

We've called and called her but she hasnt come back. Am now worrying about foxes as she is quite small despite her age Sad and we live in woodland.

Can anyone cheer me up and tell me she will come home? Our last three cats all lived to be very elderly so its been many years since we have had to fret over a kitten. I'd forgotten how worrying it is when they go awol....

Really pleased for you. Have been in this position many times with our two current cats. Very scary when they were very young - especially when they chose freezing cold nights to go AWOL. We now lift their food bowls in the afternoon to make sure we can get them in by around 8pm - and give them some kind of little treat for coming home - bit of tuna etc.

Thruaglassdarkly · 27/11/2011 20:22

Yay!!!!

Was just thinking about her as I was doing my ironing and came up to check.
Pleased for you, her and Gordon. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2011 20:25

I bet she will sleep for 2 days now!

TheOriginalFAB · 27/11/2011 20:30

OMG Thank God I didn't see this thread until now and Rosie is home Grin.

The only good thing I remember my twat of an ex did was tell me to tap a tin of cat food with a fork when I wanted FABCat to come for food, even if she was right by my feet, as then she got used to it being her come to me sign. Maybe teach Gordon and Rosie that?

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 20:32

Aw thank you everyone. She is indeed a little bugger Grin

I think you would all have laughed at the 'moment'. DH appeared from the darkness of the branches and brambles and boulders on the hillside with Rosie in his arms like some sort of superhero, we hurried through the bottom field and then rushed up the steps to our house (both crying). I said to DH 'cant wait for the reunion with Gordon when we get in'. He put her down next to Gordon, who promptly turned away and started tucking into his tea! Mind you, he hadnt really eaten much today and he had been such a big brave brother coming into the fields with us to search for her, so I suppose we can forgive him.

Popped back into the dining room just now to see what they were up to: Gordon was lying across DH's laptop keyboard as usual and Rosie was all intertwined with him. He was carefully washing her face.

Thanks again everyone for helping me through the last 24 hours, its soooooooo much appreciated Thanks

What I hadnt said and what was really worrying us is that we live by some waterfalls. Walking our dogs this afternoon, I caught DH peeking down into the ravine at the bottom of the falls at the same time as me....phew phew phew

Please have a glass of Wine to celebrate with us.

just zoomed to the end to see the outcome. SO pleased your fur baby came home. I cry every time mine is out a bit late. I am paranoid and lock her in after dark every night. she's so used to it that she's in of her own accord by night fall. And if she isn't I'm frantic.

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2011 20:37

OOh was it a bit like Mr D'Arcy emerging from the lake? Or the fireman with the baby in his arms? Grin

Enjoy your Wine and you will sleep better tonight too!

Jenski · 27/11/2011 20:38

So glad you found your little cat. I only just saw your thread and am sitting here with our new family kitten. So glad it was a good ending.

issey6cats · 27/11/2011 20:39

brilliant glad shes home i have a brother and sister combo and know one of them would be gutted if the other one disapeared as they are like one cat with two heads they are that close to each other

marriedinwhite · 27/11/2011 20:41

Phew that was getting worrying for me as I worked my way through the thread. So pleased she's home. [purr emoticon]

EllenandBump · 27/11/2011 20:44

Our kitten, stripey, went out and got lost in all the snow a couple of years ago, and was gone for 10 days, he was only about 7/8 months old at the time and was the baby of the litter, but he was fine. Skinny, but fine, so dont give up hope, she probably is laying asleep somewhere, happily tucked up. All the best and hoep she returns soon. x

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 20:49

Grin at Mr Darcy. I suppose in the dark with my dodgy torch (had to keep bashing it to make the light come on) and him using his phone to try to light his way to her and there being no streetlights and me being a bit tired from staring out of the bedroom window half the night last night just in case she came home and couldnt get in, then yep I can definitely see the resemblance.

Funny you should say about the fireman. Our last cat got stuck at the top of a huge tree and a rather lovely fireman climbed up and rescued her sigh He started climbing up without his safety harness and the branch he was standing on snapped. Luckily he caught his feet on the branch below. It was all so delightfully dramatic.

Will try to get a picture of the little bugger later.

A picture of the fireman? yes please Grin

HansieMom · 27/11/2011 21:25

I also taught my cats to come when I called them and banged on a can of cat food with a fork. We acquired a stray and he learned that super fast. Now they just come when I call. Of course I always have to reward them with wet food or they would lose the faith. It's fun to see them come tearing in from the woods out back.

crazynanna · 27/11/2011 21:28

Yes Sparkling...let's get Seaweed's baby home now

follyfoot · 27/11/2011 21:31

Oh yes, that would be just wonderful. Absolutely everything crossed here for Seaweed

Photo of the little bugger now on profile (sadly not the fireman Jenski) with Gordon the concerned brother behind.

She's much smaller in real life than she looks in the photo, but she does look even more relieved to be home in real life than in the photo!
