to just cut off contact in shame

Last night I truly disgraced myself. I took a few painkillers and antihistamines earlier in the day and ended up so drunk I could barely walk. Lost phone, abused friends, people now hate me and I am sitting at home crying with shame.

WIBU to just disappear from these people's lives forever now I have apologised? I hate myself.

Hey you will feel better when the hangover wears off, alcohol is an natural depressant. Take care of yourself today, things won't look so bad tomorrow.

Don't be daft Smile

You made a mistake, your friends will know that if they're real friends.

Please don't hate yourself.

PotteringAlong · 26/11/2011 11:36

Yes; you would!

Look, you made a mistake, you've accepted you were a knob somewhat inebriated and apologized profusely. You might need to leave the ball in their court for a bit but don't walk away. If they're good friends they will move on. Maybe not completely forget (ie you might never live it down, not that they'll hold it against you) but is the friendship worth it?

lubeybaublely · 26/11/2011 11:36

Apologise genuinely to people and then go about your life as normal. Everyone makes mistakes

TheRuderBarracuda · 26/11/2011 11:36

Can you remember enough to apologise? (and yes FC is right - you will feel worse with hangover plus depressant effect of alcohol so maybe be a bit kind to yourself today)

SarahStratton · 26/11/2011 11:37

Aww, we've all done this at some time. Don't worry about it, seriously. It will all be forgotten pretty soon. And it's party season, there will be plenty of people behaving badly. Far worse than you.

MarieFromStMoritz · 26/11/2011 11:38

Most people have done something like this. Give yourself a few days and the remorse should wear off. Be kind to yourself - these things happen.

takingbackmonday · 26/11/2011 11:39

To quote my friend:

"I hope you know you disgraced yourself and ruined the whole night. You were rude, obnoxious, loud and offensive to everyone you came into contact with. By the end of the night you couldnt walk and lost all your stuff and yelled at people to find it for you"

I just want to die. I am usually a very friendly drunk. Never again.

sillybillies · 26/11/2011 11:39

Get out and show your face as soon as possible to get it over and done. Most people have done this at some time or another so most can relate to it and it will soon blow over. As long as its a one off most people forgive and forget. I hate the morning after where the memories creep back one by one and you spend the morning randomly blushing while nursing a very sore head.

verytellytubby · 26/11/2011 11:40

Oops. Ring your friend and apologise.

It's not like you killed someone.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 11:41

Go round to said friend with a bunch of flowers and a big apology - REALLY over do it on the apology, then leave it with her. everyone is allowed to do this once, it's when it's a regular thing that it pisses people off.

Don't text apologies - do it face to face.

lubeybaublely · 26/11/2011 11:41

Just apologise as i said - explain about the antihistamines and offer a genuine apology. You can't do any more than that and any real friends worth having will accept it.

Your friend sounds like she has a broom up her arse tbh. Very few people get through life without alcohol induced shit behaviour at one point or another.

RoxyRobin · 26/11/2011 11:42

Apologize sincerely to those you offended and put it down to (a not to be repeated!) experience.

takingbackmonday · 26/11/2011 11:42

the friend is male. He's done similar in the past.

I am so ashamed. I was horrible to people I like who do not deserve it. I don't even know why.

Oh, bless you Grin

Honestly, I imagine most of the women on Mumsnet have done this at least once in their lives. Don't worry about it. You didn't do anything truly terrible. And once your mates have got over feeling all superior, they will forgive you.

storminabuttercup · 26/11/2011 11:45

We all make mistakes. Apologise and leave it at that! Your friend has done the same, you obviously forgave him!

I prescribe plenty of liquids, junk food and crap telly!

takingbackmonday · 26/11/2011 11:46

I am crying in actual shame. Lost phone so cant call anyone to apologise. His rant at me was over facebook.

So glad I am leaving this city in a couple of weeks.

I dont get hangovers, thank God.

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 26/11/2011 11:47

I find people are mainly just glad it wasn't them who overdid it. I've forgiven and been forgiven for this and after a week or so, it's all forgotten.

WorraLiberty · 26/11/2011 11:49

It could have been far, far worse!

Just chalk it up to experience, I'm sure your friends will forgive you Smile

takingbackmonday · 26/11/2011 11:51

To make it worse it all occurred in one of those gentlemanly clubs so my hideousness stood out. I am actually crying with shame - I thought it was just a phrase but no, entirely possible.

OP posts:
WhollyGhost · 26/11/2011 11:56

He doesn't sound like much of a friend. Just get yourself ready (putting on make up etc if you wear it), and go for a walk.

You've apologised, most people have been there, or will be, it will be forgotten about soon. Stewing like you are, will make things worse.

ImperialBlether · 26/11/2011 11:56

Hmm don't want to make things worse for you, OP, but I don't think the painkillers and the antihistamines earlier in the day would account in any way for your behaviour/the way alcohol affected you.

I would remind your friend about the times he was in a similar situation - he shouldn't be claiming the moral high ground if he's been just as bad.

alexpolismum · 26/11/2011 12:00

Yes, definitely. Hang your head in shame. You are the only person ever in the entire history of the universe to have got drunk and been obnoxious.

HellonHeels · 26/11/2011 12:02

Your friend sounds quite mean. Especially if he has form for similar behaviour himself. You are in a majority I think of people who've had one-off alcohol-fuelled episodes of bad behaviour. Be kind to yourself; apologise sincerely. If your friends are decent they'll tease you a bit and move on.
