No teacher bashing, please.

A recurrent theme in the discussions about the changes to teachers' pensions is that teachers will not be able to retire at 55 any more. They will need to work until they are 65+ if they want their full pension.

Just like everyone else.

So what's the problem with that provided they are fit to work? Obviously some won't be able to and will, presumably, be able to retire on ill health grounds if they're not.

Just read the comments about how the 60+ teachers are all better than the younger teachers because the 20-something teachers are crap at spelling, grammar, etc. Who do they think taught these younger teachers??!! It's all the ones who are now in their 60s and being heralded as gods amongst teachers!!!

Some of the best teachers I ever had were near retirement.

I've worked in lots of hotels and I've never seen a chambermaid over the age of about 40

Mum's still teaching, she's 61 and still on top of her game - but completely and utterly fucking knackered. I have seen a massive change in just a couple of years.

She'll be going until she's 66 (took years out to have kids, kids' father fucked off, big hole in pension.) I honestly don't know how she's going to do it.

I taught for 5 years, in a PMLD school, and it was exhausting. Physically, mentally, emotionally. I'm going back as soon as possible (job situation poor in NI) because I absolutely love it, but I don't think I'll be able to do the job as well in 20 years as I can now!
