To find Jimmy Carr's latest 'joke' really disgusting and pathetic

Jimmy Carr has done it again. Nor content with making deeply disrespectful and horrid jokes about soldiers, he has now made a joke about children with Down's Syndrome and the Sunshine Variety coaches that do so much to help these kids and others too.

I used to like him but he goes too far. I really think that some things should not be joked about. Why do some people feel the need to tell
Jokes like that?

Yet, I am also aware of the fact that we can't censor jokes, but I wish some comedians actually set out to make us laugh with properly funny jokes rather than the nasty shit that Jimmy has been peddling again.

If you dont like them don't watch them. No one is forcing you to.

Sorted.

Sevenfold · 25/11/2011 23:23

I do wonder If I should ask ds for a suggestion, 19 yr olds have a good imagination

Sevenfold · 25/11/2011 23:23

Whatmeworry oh grow up, it is not as simple as that

FloraPost · 25/11/2011 23:25

Ah, better not go into it in case I get bollocked again.

I had an interesting conversation with Stewart Lee after seeing him trial some new material, some of which referenced Down Syndrome as an insult (NOT in the same vein as Boyle, Carr & Gervais, I hasten to add). He listened, gave a very thoughtful explanation and concluded that if he got similar feedback from others then he would consider dropping the material. Thoroughly nice chap and a proper intelligent comedian.

edam · 25/11/2011 23:27

That's interesting, smallwhitecat, I saw an interview or something with Carr where he claimed he was a virgin until he was 27 'because I was very religious'. It seems from your posts that it might have been more a lack of opportunity.

Spermysextowel · 25/11/2011 23:27

This has been my first experience of MN when I can see it is what it is because you say what you say & I thank you for it.

Glitterknickaz · 25/11/2011 23:27

wonders if heartfelt posts were completely unread ok Wmw let's make 'jokes' about your children, after all you don't have to watch, only deal with the repurcussions

Sevenfold · 25/11/2011 23:27

yeah.....ok but he thought about it. why?
why would anyone think of making jokes about someone with a disability ?

saintlyjimjams · 25/11/2011 23:29

Shunned by females? A virgin until 27? (Allegedly). It's all beginning to make sense.

Now where's that tank?

StealthPolarBear · 25/11/2011 23:29

ugh what a fuckwit. here's hoping very bad things happen to him

Whatmeworry can I ask you, if the same joke were about black people, would you still say "Don't watch it if you don't like it"?

edam · 25/11/2011 23:35

Yup - I recall the phrase 'and there's no shame in that'.

Re. Stewart Lee - having seen his work before, my guess would be if he were going to talk about Down's, he'd do it in an intelligent way and it would be very, very clear that the butt of the joke was negative attitudes or something, NOT people with Down's.

saintlyjimjams · 25/11/2011 23:37

I like Adam Hills - he's hilarious

Sevenfold · 25/11/2011 23:38

I love Miranda(go on laugh at me I don't mind) she is really funny

edam · 25/11/2011 23:39

btw, I'm old enough to remember when Jim Davidson was allowed on telly, making fun of Black people, doing exaggerated accents (very badly) because ooh, Black people are silly, aren't they? Bet there were people back then saying 'well, if you don't like those jokes, don't watch'. Only times moved on and people - including TV commissioners - realised it wasn't very funny. One day I hope people will look back and think it was astonishing that in 2011 nasty jokes about people with disabilities being 'stupid' or 'looking funny' were broadcast. Hope that day comes very soon.

saintlyjimjams · 25/11/2011 23:43

Heh heh

FloraPost · 25/11/2011 23:46

Exactly so edam.

I heart Stewart Lee.

Whatmeworry · 25/11/2011 23:49

Whatmeworry oh grow up, it is not as simple as that

I think it is actually. There will always be people who say things that offend you. You are under no obligation to listen to them.

Simple really.

BTW I am always amused when someone says " grow up" as I recall it was the stock phrase of early teenage girls when I was growing up.

Oh wiki says he was a virgin until he was 26 because of this catholic faith Hmm. Weird stuff involving the arrest of his father (according to wiki).

Oh my fingers are itching to edit the wiki entry (I will be good and sit on my hands).

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 25/11/2011 23:54

Whatmeworry has a point.

If comedy only contained material guaranteed to offend no one we wouldn't have any jokes.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 25/11/2011 23:56

Remembering how great goodness gracious me was.

edam · 25/11/2011 23:56

whatmeworry - do you really not believe or understand the posts by parents of disabled children who say their children are the victims of taunts and cruelty? Do you not realise that parents ignoring Boyle and Carr doesn't prevent those comedians' 'jokes' being used against real people with disabilities? Surely you understand that having Boyle and Carr on TV encourages spite towards people with disabilities - that it gives licence to those who think it's funny to mock children with DS, for instance?
