Don't even need to ask if I'm being unreasonable because I know I'm not.

These ridiculous tanklike constructions being driven around London is just damn selfish.

Do these people think that "rough terraine" is just round the corner from Fulham High Street or something.

QuintesentialShadows · 24/11/2011 19:45

It is blardy ridiculous in London. I have one such car, it is very useful in the arctic (where my car lives), with hills, mountain passes, sleeth, ice, snow, bumpy roads, but not in London. Here, I drive a Peugeot.

NICEyNice · 24/11/2011 19:47

I regularly refuse to let out twatty drivers from junctions. I have a equal opportunities policy on this though. All types of car can be classified as twatty drivers. I do not discriminate against 4 x 4.

Only exception to this rule is black BMW sports cars. Then you can definitely wait your turn.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 24/11/2011 19:50

Yes imo you are a twat Fleetwood Grin.

So, anyways, when you go and visit your rellies in the country, do you go off road? We have family in countryside so remote that you have to drive 30 minutes to buy a pint of milk. And yet, amazingly, we still don't feel the need to drive a fucking monster of a car.

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 24/11/2011 19:56

Thought you might say that Grin

Well, actually, yes to off road - around farms etc (I know we could drive there in a non- 4x4 and use another car to drive round etc but...we don't). Also it is helpful for driving to the Alps in the raging snow for skiing.

Perhaps I should be saying "My name is Fleetwood, I own a black Landy and I am a twat"? And then bow out. Grin

I think it was needing to own a particular type of car in order to accommodate skis that needed to be whispered.

mumblechum1 · 24/11/2011 20:08

All this stuff about needing a 4x4 in the country - I've lived in the country almost all my life and ya know what? WE HAVE TARMAC ON THE ROADS HERE, TOO!

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 24/11/2011 20:16

Spot on bibbity.

Ripeberry · 24/11/2011 20:20

People won't admit it, but they have big 4X4s to make sure that they survive a crash with your tiny little car.

And no I don't have a 4X4 but have a small MPV.

lockets it's not a bad excuse, it's not lame. it's a necessity in my household. our other family car is a golf, we do go out in it as a family but i'm 6ft and my 3yr old has to sit in the front. it's a nightmare for anything more than a quick trip into town.

4x4 or people carrier, i chose 4x4. what's your problem?!

retiredgoth2 · 24/11/2011 20:29

...no problem with 4x4s, plainly.

But struggle to believe that so many folk live in Fulham.

...now that is wanky...

Am Grin at how the 4x4 drivers have come on here to defend their choices but have mainly just reinforced all the stereotypes. I live in a town but DCs go to school/nursery out in the sticks. Almost all the other parents at DS2's nursery (which is on a farm) drive Chelsea tractors which they don't need to navigate the local (tarmacked) roads or accommodate their 2 children - I've been managing to do so just fine in my Focus for years, even in the snow. So, yes, I think they are primarily a status symbol. Only one or two of the dozens of Chelsea tractor driving mums round here seem to have any real idea of how wide their cars are. I would be delighted if they made drivers of 4x4s retake their tests in these vehicles. We'd suddenly see far fewer of them about.

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 20:37

Bibbity...I am a snob. I don't mind admitting that at all. That is probably why I don't generally care what people think of the car I drive... I Am of the "my money my choice" camp.

I do not ever have to justify my reason for purchasing or owning my car to anyone...

Also most people in London know you don't always wait to be let out...you have to muscle in. A big car helps enormously. So,it doesn't bother me when people say they don't let us out...as I know I don't always give people the chance to decide.

coraltoes · 24/11/2011 20:39

Two little monkeys
I don't understand why people don't just say "I have one cos I wanted one"

Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 20:40

....I'm still trying to work out if there is anything twatty about skiing. I can't come up with anything.

We sometimes go skiing. We use our non 4x4 car to get there. They have these neat things called roof racks that hold your skis on so they don't fall off.

Hang on, I'll try and find a link Wink

naturalbaby · 24/11/2011 20:52

yes i wanted a 4x4, not ashamed of that at all. i'd have been happy with many other choices but there are also hardly any vehicles i can drive with 3 car seats across the back. we did our research, we weighed up the options, we made our choice.

i shouldn't need to justify and people shouldn't judge.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 24/11/2011 20:54

So why are you posting on this thread coraltoes if you don't care what people think of the car you drive?

NICEyNice · 24/11/2011 20:55

Sorry Popbiscuit, I think skiing falls into a 'Tarquin Sport' as the royals always are going.

Don't think you can get yourself off the hook by excusing yourself with roof racks!

PeneloPeePitstop · 24/11/2011 20:57

I used to have a 4 x 4. Got sick of almost literally burning money.
So now got the Citroen (I used to call them Shitroens Grin)
It's got a special traction setting for snow too

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 24/11/2011 20:58

naturalbaby you are aware of the arguments against driving 4 x 4s?

Quite simply, they consume more fuel and are more dangerous to other road users. Yes, it is your right to choose which car you drive but you simply have to accept that other people are going to judge you for it. You can't just say "its not right to judge" - other people can and will judge you for your choice.

Why not just say: "I am very selfish on this issue and I don't care what you think" if you have to say anything at all.

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 24/11/2011 20:58

Popbiscuit - we also have a roofbox which means our skis won't fit on the top of the car.

I personally don't think skiing is twatty, but I expect some people do.

I am not justifying my need for a 4 x 4, just stating the reasons which were behind our decision-making. I also liked our car.

Agree re the muscling out coral toes. I had more of a problem getting "let" out when I drove my small peugeot.

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 21:05

been rather mild lately, hasn't it?

ElaineReese · 24/11/2011 21:06

'you just muscle in' - well, you do. Nice people don't. And I won't let you.
