haven't heard of this but surely the woman is mentally unwell and shouldn't be mixing with other prisoners?

GypsyMoth · 24/11/2011 12:53

Which one? There have been a few...

Glitterkitten · 24/11/2011 12:54

YANBU - i hope she lives in a constant state of fear

Not all murderers are mentally unwell!! People prefer to think this as it makes things seem safer

Kayano · 24/11/2011 12:55

Link?

Is there a 'hierarchy' then of 'worthy' prisoners, entitled to bash the others up? To be honest, I haven't patience with anything to do with the prison service. The time there should be 'hard', no benefits, no entitlements, no opportunity for gangs and warfare. Our prisons are a joke.

The situation with the woman you're talking about has made me far less judgmental actually. I know of her irl and am close to people close to her family and when you do it really hits home that these are real people not just someone you see on the telly.
This story has been discussed endlessly in my circle and there are lots even those close to her had no idea about so really nobody can judge.

lljkk · 24/11/2011 12:57

I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist worrying about her fate, either, BUT
Two wrongs don't make a right; I don't like the idea of violent dangerous people being used as instruments of justice, and being encouraged tacitly to act out their crazy violent tendencies. I'd like to think that we can do better than that.

Pakdooik · 24/11/2011 12:59

So "other prisoners" is now an arm of the justice system. Get a grip

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 24/11/2011 13:03

It's one of the strange things in life. A father who murders his children is an evil bastard who was trying to ruin the mother's life. A mother who murders her children is a victim herself and ill and not responsible for her actions.

I wonder if it is because of an inability or unwillingness to accept that a woman, a mother, can do something evil to her children?

I have some sympathy for someone who has a mental health problem and is not rational and who does a dreadful thing while the balance of their mind is disturbed, but none at all otherwise.

That said, it really isn't the place of other prisoners to dish out punishment.

vinegarpuss · 24/11/2011 13:03

Justice? 16 years for 3 childen's lives - I dont think so

If she couldn't have them, no-one would. If she was ill that would throw a different perspective but she was found to be sane

YABU. Whatever someone has done, we've agreed as a society that the most severe punishment is the deprivation of liberty for life. We have outlawed capital and corporal punishment for good reason. If convicted criminals are harmed, mistreated or subjected to reprisals, that is a failure of our penal system and it should be condemned.

wannaBe · 24/11/2011 13:05

not all women who murder their children are mentally ill. And presumably she will have undergone psychiatric assessment before her trial.

"This story has been discussed endlessly in my circle and there are lots even those close to her had no idea about so really nobody can judge." I think that assuming she's been tried and found guilty it's perfectly ok to judge, actually.

But.

Two wrongs don't make a right, and presumably given these are other prisoners she has been attacked by we're not exactly talking about fine upstanding members of society taking justice into their own hands - they are presumably all in prison for a reason?

pictish · 24/11/2011 13:05

YABU. Two wrongs do not make a right, and their behaviour is not justified by her crime.
It's a very childish pov to imagine it is.
Those prisoners are just using her to sate their own desire to behave like animals.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 24/11/2011 13:06

I did say it wasn't really their place to dish out punishment!

canttakeanymoreofteendd · 24/11/2011 13:06

YABU, and vindictive. I don't relish the thought of anyone being bullied and battered, whether it's Gaddafi or this woman. Nobody will ever know what was going on in her head but the fact she tried to kill herself after killing her kids suggests she was very ill, and I imagine every moment of her life is a waking hell and that she wishes herself dead. I also would be willing to bet that the prisoners who are targeting her are many of them guilty of violent crimes themselves - such hypocrisy.

OhSuzanna · 24/11/2011 13:06

Of course YABU. The poor woman is ill. Your post is Jeremy Kyle-isk in its nature. Let it be.

whoops. Sorry wannabe. you weren't talking to me Blush

mollschambers · 24/11/2011 13:07

ABU? Probably not.

Entirely predictable that other prisoners would have a go considering the circumstances. Whatever the rights and wrongs of that I'm not going to lose any sleep.

OhSuzanna · 24/11/2011 13:09

Vinegarpuss - I bet you are one of those braying for the poor McCanns' blood too.

mummytotwoboys · 24/11/2011 13:09

YANBU I really dont care and I hope they kill her to be honest.

pictish · 24/11/2011 13:11

Do you mummytotwoboys?
That's very adult of you.
