AIBU to ignore my DH's wish for a freezer list?

My DH, unusually, had an hour or two off from his 24/7 job yesterday and spent it alphabetising the spice cupboard and listing all the items in our freezer - by shelf, quantity and number. He wants me to add/subtract to the freezer list every time I put something in or take something out. I am already in trouble this morning for taking out 3 bread rolls and 2 chicken breasts without updating the list. He claims the freezer list will make life easier for me. Now, I have a pretty good idea what is in the freezer as I do all the shopping and cooking (I am a SAHM), and tbh don't want to mess around with a list when I can remember what is in the freezer or, worst case scenario, open the door and look. I told DH this and he then said it would make it easier for him when he wants to cook if he can see at a glance what we have. As background info, due to his extreme job, he cooks a meal (well, a course) maximum about once every 2 or 3 months.

So AIBU to not want to have an extra chore that does not help me in order that 4 or 5 times a year DH is saved the trouble of OPENING the door of the freezer and fridge and looking inside it?

I am worried about mission creep and lists being applied to the fridge and the veg trays next Shock. So AIBU or should I humour him for a week or two on the basis that he pays for everything?

MinneBloodBar I got a tesco white board and connected the pen to it with string and tape, no one has yet figured out that they can remove the pen
Cheaper then blackboard paint

'If I ever have to send DH to the supermarket without me I have to write the shopping list in the order he'll find things when he walks round the shop so he doesn't get too confused (and come back with a lot of un-needed random crap).'

I do this for myself. Blush

I'm sorry but I just don't get this at all.

If you are in charge of all household tasks why would you let your partner come in with a system and take over? Is it some misguided attempt to let your partner feel like the 'man in charge' at home as well as at work?

If your partner wants to alphabetise the tins or stack the freezer in date order then that's fine if they're doing all the cooking. If you're doing all the cooking then it's your organisation that should happen. If it's equally shared then find a compromise that suits both. Mollycoddling and indulging the behaviour is a bit stereotypical 50s housewife IMHO.

I, er, have been known to take a phone pic of the inside of the fridge and larder and go shopping with that. Is that bad?

I only have one size of tupperware. I got rid of all the others and now only have those plastic ones that takeaways come in. they stack so nicely in the freezer

OKAY OKAY I ADMIT IT. I HAVE PIE CHARTS. I am a helpless nerd

I write fresh food stuff on the kitchen calendar for the day it's due to be used by. This reminds me that say the chicken needs to be used before the beef. I'm not religious about use by dates, and go by smell etc., but this has definitely helped me feel guilty about cut back on wastage.

And we have a blackboard on the wall where I write stuff that needs buying and then forget to take a photo of it before going to the shop

It's pretty far gone, if you want the truth, acumenin. You can have treatment for it but you must really, really want to be cured.

Is there an app that can read barcodes? Then you can keep an inventory and take the info with you when you shop.

bananamam · 23/11/2011 18:48

I have a freezer list!, and an ongoing shopping list, so if/when store cupboard essentials run out, I know they are replaced in the next shop. Blush

I am anally retentive though and know it.

My Tupperware all sit in ordered size ready for use. My spice rack is a shambles though, and I never know what is what!

My sister can win though.....she labels everything!! From plastic tubs, to....get this.....plugs!!! "sky box", "playstation" etc. When she explained it though (makes it easier to find the right plug on an extension cable rather than unplugging the wrong one) I saw the logi in in Hmm

I'd tell him he could have the list if he was willing to do all the cooking and shopping!

He does really need help with stress - and it's not ok that he's spending his few free hours doing ridiculous tasks instead of with you.

I work in a library but I don't like to alphabetise - we do things according to how they are used. We keep all our DVDs in those caselogic books, all our films were arranged with child friendly ones at the front, then comedies, scifi etc in their genres. One day DSD (13) decided to arrange them all in alphabetical order... Noooooo! We didn't realise until she had finished :(

HauntyMython · 23/11/2011 19:09

Loving the RFID idea by the way - works wonders for library books so why not clothes, crockery, food and maybe toys for the DCs, so you know they are playing with everything in a balanced way? :o

acumenin · 25/11/2011 12:20

/me covers face laughing

I also label my plugs. Goshdarnit if that's wrong I don't want to be right!

oldraver · 25/11/2011 18:10

Oh no a freezer list would take the fun out of poking things and wondering 'whats that? defrosting it and realising it wasnt what you thought.

In our house we just know.. dont touch the stuff in green bags on the bottom shelf Grin
