To talk to my best friend about her drunken behaviour at the weekend?

I went to my friends for a couple of drinks and a get together on Saturday night which ended up with us going to the pub. My friend was borderline drunk when I got there at 8.45pm and could barely stand by the time we got to the pub at 10.30. Her DP and myself hadn't drank that much and we both felt her behaviour in the pub to be immature, ridiculous and frankly, embarrassing.

She was being loud, crass, obnoxious. Her DP had a word with her which led to her complaining about him to me, but as I was sober, I told her he had a fair point. At this time she started crying whilst barely able to sit on the stall and stormed out.

We discovered her in another pub, all over a bloke. She could hardly keep her eyes open and stringing a sentence together was beyond her at this point. I'd had enough by this time so went home. My other friend who was with us informed me in the morning that said friend had fallen over and gashed her head.

Now, I may sound 'mumsy' but I can't stand going out with her when she gets like this. She's a 25 year old woman who knows her alcohol limits, not a 17 year old going wild.

Do I talk to her about her behaviour?

I didn't write Binge Drinkling (although I wish I had) I was quoting the fragrant Porcamiseria Wink

Binge Drinkling sounds like something Brian Badonde would come out with. Grin

KatieScarlett2833 · 14/11/2011 16:22

And that is why I no longer drink.

2 glasses and I'm everybodies.....

Nice not to have to feel the morning after shame anymore.

Alouisee · 14/11/2011 16:24

Who is Brian Badonde?

spiderpig8 · 14/11/2011 16:29

I don't know why you think it is your job to put her right, you're not her mother!

Groovee · 14/11/2011 16:31

Where is pregnant?? I want to know if she did indeed witness lords lying down in front of riot vans.

As for the op, my mum denies she has any problems with drink yet she clearly pissed daily

It would be easy to be all pious about it but I found myself completely pissed off my tree 10 days ago.

I'm still Blush now - I fell over in the street, had a snooze on a bench, had to have my hands held at all times by my mates as I wandered off to 'find the next pub', randomly broke into song - including in the Chinese restaurant (Adele if you must know), told everyone how much I loved them, said to one of my closest friends 'he was the least gay man I ever met', told very rude jokes, made up some serious lies (to cover up truths I'm supposed to be keeping secret), cried for ten minutes non stop........

I'm 39, I don't get out much - and haven't been that pissed since the last times I saw the same group of friends 10-20 years ago. I'm quite sure that they must now think I'm like that all the time Hmm

I'm not, I have an allotment FFS. And I drink 2 glasses of wine a week.

Forgive her, we're all occasionally foolish.

'tbh I am slightly that people think that 25 is still young enough to act quite so irresponsibly. 25 is an adult - she is not a child who doesn't know any better. '

agreeing with Wannabe. Why is this sort of behaviour seen as acceptable and 'fun'? I feel sorry for the police officers who have to deal with these idiots every weekend. OP, your friend sounds like an alcoholic if she is downing that many double vodkas before going out.

OhdearNigel · 14/11/2011 16:37

Are you her Mum ? No. Then mind your own business. Unless she's putting herself at risk of harm you are not the custodian of her behaviour

KalSkirata · 14/11/2011 16:39

she is her friend and a friend should be able to tell you that you are putting yourself at risk in many ways behaving like this.

wannaBe · 14/11/2011 16:44

tbh I would be inclined to do one of two things:

I would either:

Talk to her in terms of the fact I was her friend and worried about her, however as I think she is an alcoholic thi would probably be counter-productive as alcoholics have to realize for themselves to want to get help.

Or I would end the friendship and tell her why.

ragged · 14/11/2011 16:45

wannaBe offers sage advice.

YouWithTheFace · 14/11/2011 16:50

I drink alcohol almost every day, I come from a background where alcohol is a normal and integral part of life, but the culture where it's not a big night out unless you've thrown up, thrown name and passed out in your own bodily fluids - what the hell? I just don't get it. I've dropped friends in the past for behaving like this. They were fine with it - they were ready to drop me for being boring. It's a win win.

LeBOF · 14/11/2011 17:04

Just cry off going out with her again- she'll soon get the message. Go easy on the Horlicks though- it can make your stools loose.

OTheShame · 14/11/2011 17:17

You sound like you dont like her so why stay friends wirh her? Just cut her op if you dont like her behavior.

She is a grown woman and fgs dont tell her as has been suggested!

GoForthAndSwivel · 14/11/2011 18:37

I do like her, very much so. She isn't a bad person, just goes so fucking wild when she drinks, it's hard to be around her. If I didn't like her, I wouldn't give a shit. But I do.

LeBOF - I can't stand Horlicks :o

I enjoy a drink and socialising, don't get me wrong, I don't insist on being stuck up my own arse with regards to drinking. But she let's herself get so far beyond the point of control, it's worrying. And if a friend can't talk to her about this kind of stuff, who can? I don't want to mother her, make her stay in etc but she does suffer with Crohns and I've tried helping her see her extensive drinking will harm her but she genuinely doesn't seem to care.
