My iphone earphones have stopped working after just 1 year. One measly year, people - who among you still has a functioning vintage pair of Walkman earphones from the 1980s? Exactly.

Anyway, so I go to the Apple website to see how much it will cost me to replace this piece of crap with another equally crap piece of crap. Ready?

Steady?

£26.

Shock Hmm

Thank God for ebay, I say. £1.69 and a year's warranty.

The eBay ones are proper apple?? Cos ime only real apple are any use

thisisyesterday · 10/11/2011 22:19

i would go to apple and complain and get a new pair

MasterOfTheTriforce · 10/11/2011 22:19

Mine stopped working after only a short time, their earphones are pants,I definately wouldn't pay 26 quid for them :o
I use a cheapo pair, got lots of them.

Portofino · 10/11/2011 22:20

Um. just buy some new ones? If the wire gets beaten up over time, well they do get broken.

theoldtrout01876 · 10/11/2011 22:46

I never buy anything from apple without a huge warranty. Every i pod that has ever come into my house has croaked within a year, usually within a week or so of the store warranty running out. Dd2 is on her 2nd replacement classic within a year.
Earbuds though I buy the cheapest I can find that work with I pods cos the kids just bugger them up PDQ. I think its a huge rip off but the kids love apple shit stuff

carabos · 10/11/2011 22:47

YADNBU. iHate my iPhone.

eurochick · 10/11/2011 22:51

I've had expensive earbuds that have stopped working after a year-18 months. Unfortunately things are not made to last.

rhondajean · 10/11/2011 22:52

The apple earphones have got to be the most uncomfortable in the world, none of us use them, its a shame cos the white is nice but we upgrade the earphones when we buy anything from them.

Should say, both me and DHs original ipods still work perfectly and they are about 6 years old this month, I do think in general they make really good products.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 10/11/2011 22:52

Buy some proper ones, Apple ones are shite for sound.

Sharney · 10/11/2011 22:52

Wow! I must be really lucky. Have had my ipod 3 years and had no worries, even after dropping it in the bath once. Almost everyone I know has an apple something. Never heard any major complaints before.
DH just said the ipad is a bit sucky when you do updates if you've loads of apps coz blahblahblah..........

ouryve · 10/11/2011 22:57

YANBU

everything costs a ridiculous amount more than non-apple stuff in the first place. You'd at least expect it to be more robust.

Soups · 10/11/2011 22:59

You've had earphones that have worked for a year?

I don't take care of mine and they're always shoved in my bag and dragged out. I've went through many a pair of walkman ones too. There's always the loss of a pad, or a dodgy connection appears. Don't pay £26! Go to the supermarket, or online, you can get as good, or better, for less.

IdRatherBeInBed · 10/11/2011 23:00

Go to apple and complain get a free pair ;)

BleedyGhoulzombiez · 10/11/2011 23:34

If I thought Apple actually paid attention to their customer complaints, I'd write to them. I sent them a complaint about something about a year ago...still waiting for a reply Hmm.

Those of you who get better quality ones, where do you go and what do you spend?

OP posts:
GwendolineMaryLacey · 10/11/2011 23:37

Bloody hell, I've had earphones in my ears since 1981 and have never ever had a pair last more than a year. In fact a year was a result, doesn't matter how much I paid for them.

ThatsYouThatIs · 10/11/2011 23:42

Apple headphones are rubbish...the sound quality is poor. I use skullcandy ones with my iphone and they're much better.

Soups · 10/11/2011 23:50

Thinking about it. As a teenager I used to regularly take my old Walkmans apart to deal with a loose connection for the headphone socket. It's how I learnt to solder ;) Always went before the headphones

But yes, do complain to Apple, why not? You may get lucky. Is it worth asking for a voucher, rather than replacement? Again you may get .

Are you talking about those standard white ones? Yeah, supermarket, PC store, they'll make your ears ache less. I have some nice ones with some of memory foam for the ear bits, they were less than £20. I have small ears and they're so comfy and great sound.

RubberDuck · 10/11/2011 23:53

I have used many different brands of earphones - Skullcandy, Ultimate Ears, Apple, Sennheiser - I consider it good going if they last 6 months, tbh. I am clearly rough on earphones.

Also, £26 is cheap. My current set of UE were around £70 in a sale. But sound quality is pretty good (miss the bass range of my old Skullcandys though, sigh)

JarethTheGoblinKing · 11/11/2011 00:27

See that pile of broken apple kit over there, rotting into obscurity? that'syouthatis

Grainger · 11/11/2011 00:29

I can't stand apple. Android all the way.

CurlyBoy · 11/11/2011 02:13

I have never had any complaints about Apple quality. I'm on only my third Mac desktop since 1994 with it only being bought to upgrade. My previous one still works. I'm still on my original iPod nano bought in 2007. Saying that, their headphones and mice have always been a bit crap. I've never had any stop working but I've always bought better ones.

nomoreheels · 11/11/2011 07:18

I love Apple in general (we have 2 x computers, 2 x ipod touch, an iPhone, iPad & Apple tv - DP is a bit obsessed) but their headphones go straight into the bin. No bass & the shape hurts my ears. Sennheisers are ace. They come with 3 different sizes of moulded parts so you can get a snug fit. I keep mine in the pouch they came with. If you wrap them around your ipod, they will break much faster.

TartyMcFarty · 11/11/2011 07:26

ime only real apple are any use

Not me! I find Apple earphones way too big - the bony bit in my ear feels like it's broken after I wear them. I like the ear-bud type things, but they still cost a few quid. Not £26 though!

MilkNoSugarPlease · 11/11/2011 07:58

Apple earphones are RIDICULOUSLY uncomfortable!

Skull candy are ace and the ones with the fabric round the wire, last aaaages!!

ChuffMuffin · 11/11/2011 08:02

Seconding Skullcandy. Mine were £15 and I love them!
