to think bonfire night is not what it used to be?

Ok, the fireworks were great but there are no bonfires round here and we were the only people in a huge crowd who had sparklers!

When I was younger we used to cycle from bonfire to bonfire on different village greens etc. Those were the days!

Not been to any this year, my dc aren't even interested!! They are more bothered by the glowsticks and coke/hotdogs!!

I think it has become more "fireworks" night, but personally i'm quite happy that burning an effigy of a catholic has become a less important part of the festivities!

Oooh, back in my day, it always used to be cold and dry with a clear sky. Not muggy and rainy.
My dad used to nuy some fireworks for the garden.My mum made baked potatoes and grated cheese.

My DCs scoffed at the rather pathetic fireworks I bought last year.So we went out to a display.They like the 'small bomb' stylee fireworks it seems.

We had a great bonfire at the PILs tonight- much better than the crappy recession fireworks. There is usually a municipal display down the road, but I think it has been retired due to the cuts. I suppose sending thirty grand up in smoke doesn't make much sense at the moment.

I remember one place I lived a pick up would drive round with all of us kids riding on the back and we kocked on doors and people gave us their old bits of fence and what not to burn. The bonfire was huuuuge and it melted my bonfire toffee that I had in my pocket.

I'm in Brussels but lucky enough to have seen great fireworks. No bonfire, and no sparklers allowed though due to H&S. When I was a girl, the fun was "penny for the guy", collecting wood for the bonfire and a dozen crappy bangers, with a catherine wheel if you were really lucky followed by a jacket potato. It used to SEEM magical.....

We had fireworks and a mini bonfire which dh made in the barbeque bucket We toasted marshmallows and had a lovely time and we are Catholics so we didn't have a guy

I miss the bonfires but still enjoy the 5th and the fireworks. In our neighbourhood, it was the kids who scavenged for weeks for 'fuel' (usually ripped up fences and old couches), would build the fire and take turns guarding it against other areas trying to steal our stuff. On the 5th we would light it and the more daring would get as close to it and sit on it till the flames got too high. We'd run round nicking anything we could to keep it going and then spend the whole night by it, roasting potatoes which were filthy and charred black (and usually still rock hard). Can't see that going down too well in this day and age.

Mild and drizzly just ruins it for me. It needs to be properly nippy so you can warm your hands on mugs of hot chocolate.
We used to get indoor fireworks sometimes - very odd Chinese things that made little puffs of smoke or oozy blobs that looked like cat poo.

Try saying Tchaikovsky with a mouth full of pretzels.

We had a fab night.
Walked to the local display stopping at the chippy en route. Fantastic display with all those fireworks that are so loud you can feel rather than hear them, fun fair next to it, loads of people wandering through town to watch.
T'was great.

My dad built our own bonfire once, but it transpired that an escaped convict (from nearby ranby prison) had taken refuge behind nearby hedge for the warmth!! If only I had known!

I was wondering if there was a set music repetoire for firemwork - to include a bit of Tchaikovsky, the Dambusters and the Star Wars theme tune. We had the Pink Panther music tonight.

I've had Tchaikovsky all evening as DP is watching V for Vendetta in the background!
