I know i'm a bit late with my rant about this, meant to post yesterday Blush. Anyhoo, there is no way that cushion was best in show! Was bad enough her cake won last time, but to get best cushion and best in show is just taking the pissShock. Don't know why I have continued to watch, this show makes me want to stick craft pins in my eyes Wink.

Not many people entered that category compared to last week's show, that was massive and the standard was very high. At least she put some effort in this week rather than just wound a bit of old book round a spindle thing!

grovel · 04/11/2011 11:20

The cushion was naff. Twee. Horrid.

betterwhenthesunshines · 04/11/2011 11:22

I thought that too, but then I watched a previous week on replay (Wales) and she didn't get any placing in any of her 3 categories. I agree the cushion wasn't anything spectacular but then it's down to personal taste often isn't it?

DammitJanit · 04/11/2011 11:24

I agree that the fusion wasn't that attractive, but if you compare it to the others, it had the most variation of skills. Appliqué, patchwork, machine embroidery, and hand embroidery. I think that's why it won. The other things were one or two skills only.

whathellcall · 04/11/2011 11:24

I know it wasn't the worst cushion ever, but it didn't look like the best cushion there, never mind the best thing in the show! One of the judges even described it as naive, I had a bit of a laugh at that thinking they were being kindly at poor Kirstie's effort, and then they went and gave her 2 top prizes Shock.

Was shouting Fix Fix at the TV at that point Grin.

I liked the cushion and it showed lots of different craft methods.

If we're on the subject of twee that green no place like home thing was dire!

valiumredhead · 04/11/2011 11:25

Xposted with dammit

DammitJanit · 04/11/2011 11:25

I think the reason why it could be seen as a 'fix' is that unlike all the other competitors, she has many more skilled teachers at her disposal, and more time.

DammitJanit · 04/11/2011 11:26

Oh yes valium, that was nasty mcnasty. And the cross stitch was shocking!

shineynewthings · 04/11/2011 11:29

I've been thinking about this and I think the judges were looking at the technical elements.

On the one cushion she had: Patchwork, Hand embroidery, Needle turn applique, quilting, and a dissolving free motion embroidery technique. If you do any sewing you'll realise that she did put a lot of work into that one cushion, and I frankly have seen much lesser quality cushions selling for small morgages in craft fairs and shops.

For the combining of so many technical elements she might have deserved to win.

The hare looked shit, even Kirstie was considering removing it at one point.

Don't believe her carribean fruit cake was the best either. When the lovely Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall enters these types of shows with his food he never gets anywhere, despite actually being a chef! Yet Kirstie comes along and at the first attempt makes the best cake. I smell a rat Hmm.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 04/11/2011 11:31

She considered removing it because it was hard to sew on.

What is a 'world hare' Confused why is it called that? ( having a dense morning!)

I've only caught two chunks of this programme - the first time SURPRISE! she won the cake competition with a burnt cake that sounded rubbish in comparison to the rest, then last night SUPRISE AGAIN ! She wins first prize again with that naff cushion. From my (limited) viewings it looks like a very big fat fix.

But she lost dismally last week bint

harrietlichman · 04/11/2011 11:43

I think she won on the basis of showing so many different elements of stitching techniques etc but the thing that really gets to me is that she gets so much help from the experts on the show. If I had put in hours and hours on a piece to enter a show and then Kirstie swanned in with something that someone else had massively helped her to do I would be seriously pissed off.

I think although the teacup up was really creative it didn't show off as many skills as the so called naff cushion did Grin

I can't stand Kirstie but at least this series she actually has to finish the crafts unlike the last series!

bintofbohemia · 04/11/2011 11:47

Ah, see valium, I've not really watched it apart from snippets.

It did seem like the equivalent of the class swot getting their parents to do their homework for them.

valiumredhead · 04/11/2011 11:47

harriet my nan was a show/competition enterer of the first order and she was always reading up of different techniques and going to WI meetings where they had experts in to share their skills - don't feel too sorry for them Wink

valiumredhead · 04/11/2011 11:48

bint all her stuff was really shite last week Grin

Bugsy2 · 04/11/2011 11:48

I just keep thinking how unbelieveably pissed off all these crafty types must feel, when old Kirsty rolls in - with about as much experience as me (ie. none) and then swans off with the first prize. It either shows all the crafty types up as being completely pants, or it is a fix!!!! All that bogus - "Oh this means so much to me stuff" is starting to annoy me too. More like, "Oh hurrah, I've worked out how to make another really cheap TV programme (because it must cost next to nothing to make) & get paid lots of money". I used to quite admire Kirst - but the admiration is slipping massively.
