To get annoyed that other posters assume disabled can't work

I know its hard to get an employer to take on someone who is disabled. But I hate the assumption by some posters that because someone is disabled they won't be able to work. I know loads of people with severe disabilities who are employed including people who are deaf, paraplegic, bipolar or have severe cerebal palsy. People with severe disabilities can work and there are some employers who will employ people.

but the fact is some can't.
also that any disability will affect each person differently.
most of the young people I know have CP or acquired brain injurys and although have similar abilities, no two are the same, it affect each individual in a very individual way, I assume that could be said about pretty much all disabilities.

Yes I am trying to say that I get fed up with the attitude that of course you are paraplegic, bipolar ..whatever...so of course you can't work. Some people with these conditions can and some can't. Don't assume because for example someone is in a wheelchair or is incontinent that they can't work. In actual fact they may be working and getting paid.

And I have witnessed both on mumsnet and rl massive patronisation of disabled people where the assumption is that any severely disabled person can't work and that if they are in the workplace it must be voluntary work.

My thread is not aimed at any particular poster. I have seen this attitude come up in a number of ways with a number of posters.

But you know I am getting bored of constantly typing that some can and can't work. Every time I quote an example e.g. my lung condition, I get someone else saying, but if it was more severe you couldn't work. I have constantly all the way through this thread acknowledged that everyone is different. In fact it is why I didn't say what illnesses I have until I was called on it, because some people with my illnesses genuinely wouldn't be able to work, although I can.

Nah.

Same as always. Just couched in a different way.

Someone who really understood, really 'got it' wouldnt start a thread with the title 'disabled cant work'

Not even disabled people, not even people with disabilities, just that big lump of subhumanity 'disabled'

I aint buying the concern that people with disabilities are underestimated by your average Mner.

This is 'why should disabled get extra money out of my hard earned taxes' by stealth.

Go on, convince me otherwise.

Sevenfold · 03/11/2011 18:34

OhDoAdmit i think you are right

NinkyNonker · 03/11/2011 18:36

Ok, I will admit I am often occasionally wrong! Grin

TheHumancatapult · 03/11/2011 18:42

Agrees with ohdiadmit and seven fold

TheHumancatapult · 03/11/2011 18:44

Yep

Then goes on to tell us just how we or our dc can work because she knows someone who knows someone that can work .

Sp the rest of us must be wimps or scroungers

TheHumancatapult · 03/11/2011 18:45

Do you think I could have a badge with first class wimp and number one scrounger and ffs I still not had my goat yet either

2old2beamum · 03/11/2011 20:11

lesley33 it is my son who is incontinent not Sevenfold's DD and sadly he can't change his pads or deal with his tube feeds. Perhaps we should be targeting tax evaders.
