To get annoyed that other posters assume disabled can't work

I know its hard to get an employer to take on someone who is disabled. But I hate the assumption by some posters that because someone is disabled they won't be able to work. I know loads of people with severe disabilities who are employed including people who are deaf, paraplegic, bipolar or have severe cerebal palsy. People with severe disabilities can work and there are some employers who will employ people.

Welldone Sevenfold. Would any one please give my son deafblind, CP, epilepsy, incontinent a job when he finishes school. I could transport him myself in his mobility car, I hear gasps of indignation benefit cheat.

OhDoAdmit · 03/11/2011 11:23

The problem is more that there is a hemogenous group of 'the disabled' or as the title charmingly puts it just 'disabled'.

What does it mean 'people assume disabled cant work?'

Who are these 'disabled' ?

My mum who is elderly and has arthritis and heart problems?
My OH who has Multiple Sclerosis?
My son who has ASD and LDs?
My sons bf who has CP?

Different people and the fact that they all have conditions and disabilites does not make them similar.

The idea is a nonsense.

I think a better title would be 'aibu to think that people resent people with disabilites getting assistance whether this enables them to work or not?'

Because that is what we are really talking about innt?

Sevenfold · 03/11/2011 11:25

2old2beamum I forgot her epilepsy, thanks for reminding me.

wonder who will take her to the toilet in an office?

lesley33 · 03/11/2011 11:25

Of course some disabilities make it hard to find work. Its just the assumption that severely disabled people can't work or that no employer will give them a job, that I don't agree with. Lots of severely disabled people do work. It is of course easier if you have a good education as for some disabilities a physical job is impossible.

So I have a deaf friend who is a social worker - not with deaf people. I have chronic pain and take painkillers every day, etc. In fact in terms of disabled people themselves, I find it is often those who become disabled as an adult who are most likely to see themselves as unable to work. Those who have struggled with limitations since being kids are ime more used to working round their limitations.

But I accept this is a generalisation and doesn't apply toi everyone.

OhDoAdmit well said

OhDoAdmit · 03/11/2011 11:27

Some woman twat made the mistake of holding my OH's disabilty over his head as a threat when she was his line manager.

She was incompentent and badly organised. In order to shift the blame from her neurotic self she said 'well really if you feel you cant manage the job because of your MS perhaps we should reconsider your postition'

After the letter I wrote (under OH's name) that bitch was reconsidering her position.

I am quite sure this sort of bollocks isnt unusual despite the frothing about PC gorrrn maaad.

lesley33 · 03/11/2011 11:28

OhDoAdmit - No thats not what I am talking about at all! Of course some disabled people will never be able to work. But I have seen so many posts on mums net which basically say of course disabled people can't work. Some can and some can't. Pretending all severely disableds people can't work I think betrays and encourages a very negative attitude towards disabled people.

Look at David Blunkett. i am sure before he became a minister that many people if polled would agree that someone who is blind can't be a cabinet minister.

And of course this wouldn't be okay for everyone, but my OH used to take a disabled colleague to the toilet in the office.

Many people who become disabled as adults have a great deal more than the disability to deal with. They have to cope with the loss of their former life, the loss of a partner (break ups are very common after a serious condition is dx), the loss of their role as main carer for their children, fear for their and their family's future, loss of finacial security etc, etc etc etc bloody etc.

Its no wonder that many need some time to come to terms with it all and tbh there is fuck all help for them.

2old2beamum · 03/11/2011 11:34

Sevenfold don't be daft they will 'pone you ofcourse or the M.D. could take her.

Jenstar21 · 03/11/2011 11:34

My Uncle has severe learning difficulties, and is also registered blind (although he does have some sight). He worked as a cleaner in a factory for a few years, through a scheme to help those with disabilities into the workplace, and although he really didn't earn much, he loved working, and the social aspect of it. Sadly, when the factory closed, he was made redundant, and for the 9 years since, he has been unable to find any more work. I think that no-one will give him the chance and take him on, which is really a shame. Yes, he is very limited in what he can do, but if he gets something to do, he is very conscientious, and hard working. It seems that many employers don't see past the disability....

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 11:35

I suppose if you're talking about Mumsnet posters, the assumption may come from the person posting that they're disabled, but not actually saying in what way.

There are many many disabilities...some prevent people from working and some don't.

It's like when someone says "My child has SN" and people post their replies accordingly. Sometimes I don't see how they can do that without knowing what special needs the child has...because they're all very different and affect people in different ways.

Camerondiazepam · 03/11/2011 11:35

OhDoAdmit sorry for butting in with a total irrelevance but I love your name.

OhDoAdmit · 03/11/2011 11:37

Who pretends that all severely disabled people cant work?

The parents of the severely disabled children I know would LOVE the opportunity for their children to work and have independant lives.

Unfortunately as soon as schemes and policies are put in place people begin to complain about unfairness and political correctness.

OhDoAdmit · 03/11/2011 11:38

cameron are you a Love in a Cold Climate fan?

Camerondiazepam · 03/11/2011 11:39

More a general Mitford borderline-obsessive fan, OhDoAdmit

PeneloPeePitstop · 03/11/2011 11:41

Well OP isn't it nice that the people you know have found employers that are prepared to make the workplace accessible?

Too many employers will not recruit people with disabilities because of the monetary cost involved in making the workplace accessible.

Two candidates for a job. Both have equal qualifications. One you'd have to pay to fit ramps/widen doorways or whatever. Which would you employ in the current financial climate? Really?

OhDoAdmit · 03/11/2011 11:44

Grin I had an inkling cameron

ah ok ~Op .
forgetting the fact i do work as full time carer to my son .

Im an adult that became disabled .

first task wake up cathertise , out of bed into bathroom .swap chairs wheel into shower .wheel out of shower then dry self .
Then try and get legs through places they wont go ( feel free to tie your legs together and no standing up or moving try getting of your bed . then without moving pushing a leg get your trousers on remember you can not stand to pull them up or kneel

So next issue transport .bus well that all depends if one is running from and where i want to go , if the ramp actually works if there is a buggy in the area.

Now lets look at trains oh opps I have to know i want to travel and what time as i need to book 24 hours in advance .And i better not be held uop by a bus with a buggy on because eif miss that train no guarantee of help to board a train

Opps sorry the station you want has stairs so you need go 3 more stops get of there cross over and come back on the other side .And make sure you have booked it exact times

Unmanned stations well see above guess be hard boarding there ditto steps .
.

London underground nope add extra time as not accessible .

Get to building yes mam its accesible doh 2 stairs no mate thats not wheelchair accessible .struggle trying to hold door and wheel same time

Gte into office opps dam could not catheter so need to change pad and quite possibly clothes .Hmm toilet ok can barley get in my chair so drag bin out and wheel in again try and change and wash self best as can .

Dress wheel back concentrate on work uhoh nasty smell dawns are you that you soiled yourself oh shit litteraly , sob back to bathroom wait because someone else is in the cupboard opps disabled toilet try to clean self up

back to work toilet wheel the fecking bin out again cathertise ,Oh and dont forget smacking knees on desk as no one wants to spend money on a desk just for you

extremeley tired wheel out arghhh some fecker parked on the drop kerb go 200 yeards down road to find somewhere safe to cross , opps buggy on bus arghhh going to miss train now .so no one to help with the ramps as i missed my booked slot .

get home oh and dont forget to phone train and book tomorrows journey

/

Sevenfold · 03/11/2011 12:05

lesley33 did your dh actually lift them on to the toilet and wipe after?
did he feed them their lunch and help them to every single task?
of course not, you are missing the point.
there are disabled people who can work.
but there are a lot more who can't and the need benefits to substain them

Sevenfold · 03/11/2011 12:07

worraliberty trouble is you can't say what Sn your child has or go into details or you are shouted at for trumping

TheHumancatapult · 03/11/2011 12:07

im not daft even if I was not a carer to my son .Going out to work and the adaptation I would need will put people of as it will cost them .And at the moment when there is mass unemployment no one will want to be spending extra money on adaptation for just one person

Sevenfold · 03/11/2011 12:10

I now await the op , bet the next thing will be that carers can work.....
then I will pmsl

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 12:11

worraliberty trouble is you can't say what Sn your child has or go into details or you are shouted at for trumping

Oh that did make me laugh! I immediately thought 'farting'...then thought wtf? Confused Grin

But yes I know what you mean.

Also OP, can you imagine the response you'd get if someone said they were disabled and you assumed they worked/could work when they don't and can't?

TheHumancatapult · 03/11/2011 12:11

lol then oo can i have gold star because thats me done on both counts
