i know it is is controversal but i dont understand why some people feel the entitlement to get money for having children and aibu to think it should stop?

I think that if people want children then they should have them but they should not feel they are entitled for some kind of monetary hand out for having them

I especially feel like getting money for being pregnant like the sure start grant, maternity grant, healthy start vouchers ect should not happen because if you cant afford to have a child why should the goverment pay you to do this? what about the people who do not have any children and choose not to or can not why should they miss out on multiple grants and vouchers when they are paying more and more taxes to support the people who choose to have children and then choose not to work?

  • i have a dd and although i wanted a large family i could not afford to have more than one child so stopped but never claimed any grants ect because i did not want to be paid for being pregnant as it was my choice

Do ypou think autism is diagnosed purely for benefits and an easy to get DX Tilly?

Because in my experience (2 kids on spectryum, one grade away from an MA in Autism) that simply is not the case for the vast majority of people.

Not taking it personally as mine are in SNU education so anyone thinking they are diagnosed as a leisure pursuit is a mile off; but it's just not where the evidence is at all. there may be cases but certainly locally DX's of children take 2 years on average with proper validated tests being used in all cases, and adults only really appear at referral when their lives are in crisis (eg inability to sustain work or a relationship) according to the lead professional at the clinic. many areas don't even have adult clinics.

Of course there are cases: I can think of one I am suspicious of but for a completely opposite reason to benefits.

Mind, last time there was a similar thread on here several people piped up that they were loners so could get a DX of ASD: when I showed that was not the case by linking to the formal diagnostic criteria here they disappeared quite rapidly! Autism and ASperger's are not what so many think it is. of course you could be a trained MH professional for all I know who is an expert but there IS a lot of misinformation about what being diagnosed with ASD actually means and entails.

for ds3 it was this test alongside SLT, OT, Ed Psych and paed input; DS1 was observed ats chool over a 2 year period with input from the above plus a CAMHs Psych.

Because of course Rucoller NOBOY ever ahs the kids BEFORE the benefits

Right I spot an impending meltdown, noises a dead give away: gotta run! A&E not somewhere I want to be tonight.

usualsuspect · 02/11/2011 19:22

I hope you didn't buy that rusk out of your benefits, ouryve

isthisnameavailable · 02/11/2011 19:22

people are stating that it's not so easy, to demonstrate why no one would realistically have a load of children for the pitance of money offered

if it was about easy money then people could choose a much less invasive career- like prostitution.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 02/11/2011 19:23

Yeah cos it's such a lot of money, having kids and then they have forrin holidays, flatscreen tvs yada yada.... yawn.

isthisnameavailable · 02/11/2011 19:25

my son is Autistic, has anyone SERIOUSLY suggested that could be faked for money???? lol
You must be joking

lovechoc · 02/11/2011 19:25

These children are the next generation of doctors and nurses (well, some of them) who could be looking after you, OP. Think it over for a bit....

rycooler · 02/11/2011 19:28

If you already have 4 children when you fall on hard times that's a different matter, but to go on having children when you're already out of work and benefit dependant isn't a good move is it.

GypsyMoth · 02/11/2011 19:35

Tilly, yes. Will get one I think. That's if we are allowed to fit them! Can't see why not. Smoke alarms are fitted by law and maintained by HA. But silly rules pop up everywhere

As kids are getting older there are strict overcrowding rules. I have 3 teens the size of adults. And although it's giving me more points now the HA have found out, they will insist I move to a 4 bed. So will see

Peachy. This fortnight there were 28 of us bidding on 2x4 beds and one 5 bed. So 3 got a place, leaving 25 to bid in next session, assuming no more come on the list.

Dawndonna · 02/11/2011 19:36

So, Ry, are you saying that people with disabilities shouldn't have children if they are on benefits?

Dawndonna · 02/11/2011 19:37

OP
Let's eat Granny!

Let's eat, Granny!

Punctuation is relevant.

It' salways just surprised me. I don't know if there is more disability than there used to be or not. You would perhaps expect there to be less not more than there used to be.

TheRealTillyMinto · 02/11/2011 19:56

Do ypou think autism is diagnosed purely for benefits
No. I raised 2 points, only one was about benefits. you can reread the other.

and an easy to get DX Tilly?
my two relatives who i refer to above do con the system (for other illnesses). so it can be done, in some cases. is it easy? i dunno - they seem to dedicate their lives to conning the system but it is simultaneously a terrible waste of their lives.

NB: i was not suggesting family members who chose to be investigated for mild ASD would be faking anything. just seeking a diagnosis for the way we are.

my DP works in early years education so professionally refers children at school for investigation various SNs and he thinks we are on the mild end of ASD or similar.

and yes your list does sound like various family members. but we are more like this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger_syndrome

GypsyMoth · 02/11/2011 19:57

Xenia......where do you buy your clothes from??

usualsuspect · 02/11/2011 20:00

.

zippadeedoodaa · 02/11/2011 20:00

"children who are less likey to amount to much"
That'll be someone like me then Xenia, both my parents left school without a formal qualification between them my mother was never anything but a SAHM (oh the shame eh Xenia) but me and my 2 brothers all went on to higher education and have always worked in our chosen fields. Funny how some things aren't always predictable, glad my family wasn't wrietten off by people like Xenia Angry

devientenigma · 02/11/2011 20:01

My friend had infertility treatment twice privately and lost her baby both times. She then went on to have the same via the NHS to have a severely disabled dd. Both parents are professionals with well paid jobs etc etc, so where's the logic.......or was it something to do with the NHS lol.

I am also from a very poor working class background, yet both my sister and I have progressed through professional fields enough to move class.

No logic at all in that theory Xenia.

Why would you expect less disability not more? The population is rising...
