You hate it because it is cheap?

What's the difference between an aldi lemon and a waitrose lemon?

Where do you shop op?

keepingupwiththejoneses · 01/11/2011 01:03

Yes YADBU and a snob, Aldi food maybe cheap but quite a lot of it is actually better than name brands.

Naetha · 01/11/2011 01:04

I only like expensive food. Regardless of quality.

DontGoCurly · 01/11/2011 01:05

YABU

Aldi food is lovely. Just because most supermarkets are horribly overpriced doesn't indicate quality.

Pure nonsense. Affected nonsense.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2011 01:09

It all comes from the same places. You are a victim of branding.

SacreLao · 01/11/2011 01:27

Yep OP, because Heinz ketchup from Aldi clearly is not as nice as Heinz ketchup from Waitrose Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/11/2011 01:45

It's German and it's higher quality than much of what you can buy in the UK supermarkets. But if you don't like it, don't buy it... not difficult, is it? Confused

PadmeHum · 01/11/2011 01:54

YABU - If you can bear having your shopping thrown at you, Aldi Food is, for the most part, just as good as other food.

Like another poster said, a lemon is a lemon. I agree that some of their products are shonky, however, I now do the bulk of my shopping at Aldi and then pop across to an "upmarket" shop for the Kelloggs, Fairy etc that I cannot get at Aldi.

For my trouble, I have cut my shopping bill down by 50%. A great reason to get over my allegiance to marketing campaigns. OP perhaps you should reconsider?

echt · 01/11/2011 02:43

Aldi's fab for cleaning products, lavatory paper, kitchen roll, organic chicken, cheeses, cottonwool pads, concealer, virgin olive oil, rye bread, Crofton cookware (like a knock-off Le Creuset), their specials on gardening tools, sportswear, merino knitwear, BBQs.

I could go on. I'd rather buy these things cheaply and at good quality, and keep my money for the things which ARE expensive.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 01/11/2011 18:20

Just did an Aldi shop. Got free range chicken, pasta, micofiber cloths, olive oil, juices for kids, fish fingers and cheeses.

They aren't great for some things, but seemingly half the people in Aldi this afternoon were walking around with Waitrose carrier bags Grin

tearsbeforebreakfast · 01/11/2011 18:31

Then don't buy it. Next?

Swankyswishing · 01/11/2011 18:33

I love Aldi! And Lidl! Great quality food, especially the meat, and fruit and veg

Mandy2003 · 01/11/2011 18:35

You are lucky to be able to get to Aldi OP. My nearest is over 10 miles away with no direct public transport. Petrol to get there would be too expensive for us.

I havent got one. I wish I did. Sad

MrCondiment · 01/11/2011 18:39

Honestly op you must have your head in the clouds!

SootySweepandSue · 01/11/2011 18:40

I have worked in food manufacturing...for big brands advertising is @20% of the cost. You can't eat the tv advert so you are wasting your money.

slightlymad72 · 01/11/2011 18:40

I have just had some very nice King prawns that I bought from aldi, £8 for 1kg, can't be bad.

catgirl1976 · 01/11/2011 18:41

YABU.

God knows what you consider "non cheap" food. If you think you are automatically getting better quality on every item by shopping at Tesco / Sainsbos / Waitrose you are very misguided.

Most supermarkets meat is not of a great standard, some supermarkets are higher quality on some items and that includes the "discount" stores, some of whose brands are just European and acutally higher quality than the "familiar" UK brands and as other posters have said Heinz is Heinz wherever you buy it.

It depends on what you buy whether it is good or poor quality - not just where you buy it from. I won't buy meat from any supermarket including Waitrose as I dont think the quality is good enough but I will buy a tin of heinz baked beans from anywhere.

I don't like mass produced, frozen, processed shite but all supermarkets sell that. From Farmfoods to Waitrose - if you want to buy it, its avaliable, if you don't - don't buy it.

Its not just Aldi that sells "cheap" food and "cheap" food is not all that Aldi sells.

auntiepicklebottom2 · 01/11/2011 18:49

i find aldi fruit and vg alot better than in tesco asda ect.

i have to pay 5p for a carrier bag, so having any carrier bag is expensive lol

Minus273 · 01/11/2011 18:50

Nobody can make you like something. As long as its your own money you are spending you can spend it where you want.

manicbmc · 01/11/2011 18:52

So, not 'chap' food this time then? I can't believe you redid this thread to complain about Aldi, which sells some lovely food. Just because it is cheap, doesn't mean it is bad.

Have an Aldi Biscuit

KittyFane · 01/11/2011 19:22

You have beat me to it OP!
Was IBU to throw away a whole Iceland chocolate gateaux on Sunday before anyone else had tasted it?! I bought it, never been to Iceland before and went in to get some jam of all things. I bought the massive gateaux for £2, it looked fine but when it was defrosted and i tasted it it was disgusting, cheap, unbelievably sugary, horrible stodge and it went in the bin.
A friend bought one of those massive birthday cakes from Costco and that was disgusting too.
YANBU OP. I hate cheap food.

nametapes · 01/11/2011 19:25

...depends if you can afford posh food and pricey stuff from Waitrose etc.
I shop at Aldi and i know some of the fruit and veg is not so good.... the other food from there is fine..
