I absolutely hate cheap food , I don't know why I ate it as a
Child but now I refuse to shop in them kind of places ?

OP posts:
notyummy · 03/11/2011 11:28

I was reading Good Housekeeping yesterday (obviously it was my mothers....) and the Aldi British Turkey came second in their 'taste test' for Christmas. Was up against all the usual contenders. Was literally half the price of the Waitrose/M and S options.

I was in Aldi last night....and they are now stocking Manuka honey (Factor 10) in time for the colds and flu season, fact fans.

Oh, and I assume this thread was posted to just to get everyone all of a twitter. Aldi threads always get a good reaction on MN because so many on here have been relatively recent converts. (I am hard core loyalist since 2004.)

Notyummy I'm amazed at the number of my friends who still have never tried Aldi. I've been doing my main food shop there since 2007 when one opened within driving distance of me. I continue to tell friends how good it is and every so often a friend gives in, goes and then bangs on about how great it it. I do this face Hmm and say 'I know, I've been telling you!' But it is happening more and more now, I think as the recession bites more people will start going.

I think I should be on commission from Aldi I have sent so many there!

Trills · 03/11/2011 14:54

OP works for Aldi and has posted this to show that the "middle class, well-off" Mumsnetters love Aldi,

Byeckersiambloodyscarylike · 03/11/2011 14:56

I was told, by the area manager for my area, whom i contacted to source me a twin trolley, that one of the head honchos at aldi has young children and has decided that aldi isnt family friendly enough, you will notice baby food (ellas kitchen style) has appeared in my aldi this week, the nappies are amazing also, have used them since day one with my dts.

Is that you OP?

Im on to you! Grin

X posts trills

jellybeans · 03/11/2011 14:57

YABU about Aldi as the stuff is actually good quality. Some no frills type stuff from any supermarket is yuk though.

notyummy · 03/11/2011 14:59

Aha! I was right - TrillsDH doing some market research Wink.

I used to work for Aldi.

tiredemma · 03/11/2011 15:01

I went to Aldi for the first time last week (after seeing many recommendations on here)- I was sick to death of spending in excess of £200 in sainsbury's every month.

I went to Aldi and spent £102.

amazing value for money- I will never buy a full shop from sainsbury or telco again.

jellybeans · 03/11/2011 15:04

I wasn't that keen on Aldi at first but after a couple of times and trying the food-and saving money-I like it. You get used to the funny brands etc. and the packing up etc. I love it as it is so much quicker as it is smaller and less faff to get through. The veg and meat is the best. They also label very well if you are coeliac etc. My local ones are usually pretty busy.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 03/11/2011 15:17

Still haven't tried aldi, one opened in our town a few months ago but it is much further than Sainsburys, but I will get there. Have been a long-term fan of Lidl but didn't like their beef (gristly), althought the free-range chicken seems fine. Have thought everything else there is fab, and usually spend £50 there instead of £80 at Sainsburys (tend to buy slightly different 'basket', but it still covers the same time period, iyswim)

Fefeffion · 03/11/2011 16:03

Aldi dishwasher tablets scored really highly in 'which' magazine - beat many of the more expensive brands. Love the deli stuff from Aldi.

noddyholder · 03/11/2011 16:06

Deli stuff is brilliant. Binliners are 99p for 40 and they are decent quality.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/11/2011 16:18

Don't have an Aldi near us, beginning to feel left out :( Have a nice new Lidl though!

exoticfruits · 03/11/2011 16:36

We don't have Aldi, but I love Lidl. Wonderful German gingerbread, stollen loaf etc-cheeses, olive oil cheap fruit and veg. You can't get everything there but you can save a lot with what you do get. I had super plants for the garden in the summer, they all did well. This week I got high quality Christmas wrapping paper and some lovely thick candles.
If people are too snobbish to go they are missing out-or caught up in brand names (but I can't see why German or other foreign goods are inferior).

Saffron · 03/11/2011 18:28

Haha I think we have been had, Sammiejasminemills (OP) only posted the once!

mercibucket · 03/11/2011 18:30

I suspect a whole load of people on here are actually in the pay of some company or other to promote their products and run down other companies!

bubby64 · 03/11/2011 18:46

Just done a shop at Aldi, and will go there for most of my Christmas stuff as usual. A lot of the food and other items there are German and much better quality than other supermarkets! I had some of dh's business collegues for a dinner recently, and they and their partners were all asking where I got the food I served, Aldi gained 6 new customers that night, also, my normally very snobby SiL ifs going there to get a lot of things, which she feels are better than her normal beloved M&S

bubby64 · 03/11/2011 18:49

Aldi and Lidl are rival companies started by 2 brothers, so much of what you find in one is also in the otherGrin

MrCondiment · 03/11/2011 18:54

Wow I never knew that bubby!

kitya · 03/11/2011 19:07

Do the always have the Crofton cookware in? I cant see anything on the internet.

SinicalSal · 03/11/2011 19:16

No that is not true Bubby though I heard that tale also, with added sibling rivalry and bitter enmity declared unto death.

SinicalSal · 03/11/2011 19:30

Which was an excellent story but my German friend says a load of scheisse

elliephant · 03/11/2011 19:43

The two brothers set up Aldi together but then split the business geographically between them so there are two Aldi, North and South iirc. Lidl is a different company altogether

Lizzylou · 03/11/2011 19:49

MrsMills, you are talking out of your poo chute.

"Them kind of places" are full of lovely food. Don't be swayed by the marketing.

Hope that helps.
