I absolutely hate cheap food , I don't know why I ate it as a
Child but now I refuse to shop in them kind of places ?

OP posts:

Be glad you can afford not to OP. We're not all that lucky. Aldi is a little variable, same as all the supermarkets. Their deals on seasonal UK fruit & veg are fantastic and I found it mostly to be great quality this summer. Their baked beans are as good as Heinz and I could say the same for loads of other products. A large block of decent Cheddar cheese for less than £2. Their Brief is miles better than Tescos and way cheaper. Their Parmesan is great too. And British bacon - I struggle to get British bacon at all in Tesco without paying an exhorbitant price.

I don't buy chicken there as the one thing I won't compromise on is animal welfare and they don't sell free range chicken. Their mince is not lean enough so I go to Tesco's for that. But we've had good British pork from there in the past.

If you shop carefully in Aldi there are great deals to be had and I know we save at least 30% on our shopping bill.

gaelicsheep · 01/11/2011 23:36

Brief! Cheesy beef lol. Brie obviously.

PLUS it is so much less stressful to shop there. DS can run around without me worrying he's going to be mown down or kidnapped. He uses Aldi to pick up girls Wink. Everything's always in the same place and you don't have to have a maths degree to decipher phony offers.

Sossiges · 01/11/2011 23:37

Have a chap cheap Biscuit

gaelicsheep · 01/11/2011 23:38

Just seen that other Aldi stores do free range chicken Sad. That is simply not fair.

amazonianwoman · 01/11/2011 23:47

Today's shop from Aldi - £45. Priced it on Tesco home delivery site this afternoon (anal but preferable to cleaning house) - would've cost £64 for Tesco own brand equivalents.

I'm going every week now Grin

gaelicsheep · 01/11/2011 23:51

I'll say something else as well. There's a better class of customer in Aldi. Aldi shoppers don't think they're above everyone else, neither are they label loving chavs. How many times in Tesco have I been behind someone with a huge trolley full, myself with only a couple of items, and how many times has that person offered for me to go first - never. In Aldi it happens all the time. Aldi customers have manners.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 01/11/2011 23:51

The stores vary quite a lot and the quality/availabilty varies on a daily basis - it really does pay to find out what day they get their various deliveries.

Tampons are a great price there Grin

sozzledchops · 02/11/2011 00:30

Do hate having my shopping chucked at me though.

KittyFane · 02/11/2011 07:07

Sweeping statement there gaelic.

gaelicsheep · 02/11/2011 07:38

And the OP wasn't? Grin

porcamiseria · 02/11/2011 09:11

well if you get processed chicken and ready made lasagne, bien sur! but for the basics they are GREAT, I love all the german and Continental treats they have in Lidl

OnlyWantsOne · 02/11/2011 09:12

Lol at difference between aldi lemon and waitrose lemon

UABU

LoveBeingAWitch · 02/11/2011 09:17

Yabu if it tastes nice that's all that matters, especially wine cause then you can buy more Grin

sozzledchops · 02/11/2011 09:46

the wine is just too cheap, tasted ok as well.

kitya · 02/11/2011 09:52

Im interested in the pots and pans, are they really that good?

I have an Aldi, Ive just found out but it is only a small one.

Ive just been to Morrissons and, I really dont like it in there. People say its cheap but, I can never find my way around it and give up.

mollymole · 02/11/2011 09:58

Aldi Free Range Chicken is £4.99 and you can get a bag of frozen tuna steaks for £3.00 that has 5 pieces in. The same chickens elsewhere start around £7.50 and the cheapest frozen tuna that is not full of water is £3.00 for 2 peices in Tesco and Ocado. Most of the cereals are as good, if not better than the brands we are used to and their fruit and veg, is good value, although you do have to check it carefully for squidgy tomatoes etc. I find that I save around £15 - £20 on a comparable Tesco/Ocado shop. I don't care what the store is like as long as it is clean.

LondonToEdinburghExpress · 02/11/2011 17:53

I agree with Gaelic, I have never had anyone in Asda/Tesco say to go ahead of them but I've had it happen many times in Aldi. Now, if I am doing a big shop I always let people with just a few things go first, today two people with just a few things each went before me whilst I was getting everything on the conveyor belt.

The staff are so lovely in our local store too, I know a few of them to say hello to now and one has a baby the same age as mine so we always have a chat about them. I was chatting to one shop assistant and she said they don't get staff discount but they get paid about 30% more than Tesco/Asda pay and they can get a productivity bonus if the store does well.

Lambzig · 02/11/2011 18:08

I love aldi, but only get to go there when I visit my Dad (we dont have one near us). Aldi comes out top in lots of WHICH surveys and gets rated best by them for lots of their things (I cant remember all, but tomato ketchup was better then heinz, waitrose M&S etc and their washing powder and washing up liquid came out better than the named brands as well as other supermarket ones). My DD loves the fresh pasta. I havent bought meat there, but only because it would have to have a three hour car journey home.

Saffron · 02/11/2011 19:19

Just a small example. McVitie's Victoria Biscuit Selection Tin (725g)
This week Tesco £6.00 Aldi £4.99 - says it all really.

Saffron · 02/11/2011 19:23

Blush Actually I got the price wrong McVitie's Victoria Biscuit Selection Tin (725g)
Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's are all £6.00
Aldi £4.99
yes only a saving of £1.01 but every penny counts.

Ineedalife · 02/11/2011 19:28

Two big leeks in Morrissons on Saturday were £2, yes £2.

In aldi today 69pHmm.

Need I say more.Grin

PigletJohn · 02/11/2011 19:34

Aldi bread, buns and patissierie are far better than Tescos. they are also cheaper. Same with their jams and marmalades.

Their tinned soup, especially the smoked haddock one, is super.

Their washing-up liquid was tested by "Which" as better than Fairy, and far cheaper.

Some of their stuff I don't like.

gaelicsheep · 02/11/2011 20:58

Blueberries. £1.99 a punnet in Tesco at least. 99p in Aldi - all summer long.

Really the best thing for me is that you can whizz round with your list, knowing you are not being sneakily ripped off by changing prices, fake offers and all the rest of the palava that goes on with Tescos et al.

MrCondiment · 03/11/2011 10:17

Is aldi the same as lidl?

PigletJohn · 03/11/2011 11:22

similar approach but different company
