Fuck off back to waitrose then darling

ilovemydogandMrObama · 01/11/2011 21:14

labracadabra Aldi do Free Range chicken. The manager tells me it's a 'loss leader....' which means that people come in to buy it and the store hope to sell them other stuff Hmm

happybubblebrain · 01/11/2011 21:14

Oh if only I lived close enough to Waitrose. I would double my weekly shopping bill and I wouldn't eat any better but at least people would think I was posh. And I could sit on my high horse eating beans that cost more than most people pay for their car.

Ambi · 01/11/2011 21:19

Nice to know that supermarkets and product branding marketing hasn't been wasted on you.

Silly you for paying extra £xxx for a sticky label.

Reesie · 01/11/2011 21:20

I'm a lidl fan. We very rarely eat any processed food. The fruit and vegetables are fresh and definately more natural looking (ie bumpy carrots rather that smooth unisized ones). My meat snob husband has been won over by the beef and chicken. The cheeses are great, the tomatoes always smell great. The only thing I find isn't that great is their soya milk. The shop isn't too big so you can run around and do a shop in mins rather than trawling around the labyrinth of tesco/asda etc. Also - the staff in my local store are so friendly and lovely.

I love Aldi, but feel the same as you op about Tesco and Asda.

grumpybat · 01/11/2011 21:24

Aldi for free range chicken, cheese, yoghurt, fruit juice, wine, beer, tinned toms and beans, some veg, some fruit, french lemonade, flour and baking stuff, pizza and fresh pasta, cream, chocolate, cereals, cake, biscuits, random festive produce, dishwasher tablets, cleaning products.
Butchers for meat. Greengrocers for remaining fruit and veg.
Costs less than everything in Tescos/Sainsburys better quality all round. It's a no-brainer.

spewgloriousspew · 01/11/2011 21:27

I love Aldi. Did the weekly shop there today for under £30. A lot of their veg seems to be UK produce, which is good to see. Wish they sold more UK grown fruit though. Cereals are incredibly good value, as another poster has said.

I do get meat from the butchers though when the husband and small person require it (Aldi does sell some free range chicken, but it's excessively packaged). In fact, that's my only beef with Aldi, the fact that everything comes in bags, most of which say they can't be recycled. But, we save around £20/week by shopping there. I used to shop at the Coop, which, although I admire their ethics and still do get some bits there, is getting too expensive.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/11/2011 21:30

I love Aldi, the sad thing is ive been so skint lately that ive been having to use my credit card for food shopping so I've had to slum it in Asda instead...

Thehusbandsatcricketagain · 01/11/2011 21:33

Ressie yes the veg ect does smell better,I am a recent convert, bought some carrots the other day but finished using up some from another supermarket at the same time.........the ones from Lidl actually smelt like proper carrots, also got a huge bag of potatoes,7.5 kg I think for a little over £2 & they made great roasties this evening

I will be returning aspecially as the dh was going yes yes when the bill arrived :o

LadyBeagleEyes · 01/11/2011 21:37

This is the second thread today about Aldi isn't it?
Except op misspelled cheap and put chap on the other one.
CBA looking to see if the original is still there, but she seems to have got loads of responses on both.
Ignore.

Fo0ffyShmooffer · 01/11/2011 21:37

It appears the OP shat and ran.

Surprise Hmm

fit2drop · 01/11/2011 21:40

I did a monthly shop at Asda and spent £170 ,
I got six bags of shopping

I went to Aldi last week for a monthly shop
I spent £110, got 11 bags of shopping , the only thing I did not get was loo roll and kellogs

Aldi face cream at £1:99p came out top in a magazine poll some time ago too.
I tried it and its the best moisturiser I have ever used. My mates thought I had had some "work done" after about 6 weeks of using it. Not so much reducing lines but for brightening and enhancing the skin it is brilliant!

I love Aldi I do ... not so keen on Llidl but thats because I do not understand what a lot of the stuff is, it felt like a lucky dip shop when I shopped there a one and only time

GodKeepsGiving · 01/11/2011 21:46

Fit2drop, that is incredible! Aldi is a bit of a trek from where I live, but I shall have to make the effort Smile

Poppyandme · 01/11/2011 21:46

I went once because a work colleague recommend but I have to say I wasn't impressed - the shop itself was very dark and dingy and I wasn't that impressed with the quality of the good. Wouldn't go back I'm afraid.

fit2drop · 01/11/2011 21:56

YEP GodKeepsGiving
I was flabbergasted , previously I was a bit like Poppyandme had been in the shop when I bought the moisturiser , but didnt think much of the "set up" , however after the Asda prices seemed to shoot up over a short period of time and I was getting less and less i took a friends advice and tried Aldis.
I was amazed. Yes the products are different but my huibby says the beans are the best baked beans he has ever had, the cold meats are lovely and fresh with long dates on and the frozen meats /fish/ are really
very cheap. The cleaning products are very good and I found their fresh veg outlasted any fresh veg I bought from Sainsbo's
and as a foot note the vacuum packed beetroot is gorgeous,39p with 3 large beets in as big as apples ....yummy Grin

Moominsarescary · 01/11/2011 22:03

I'm going to see if there is an aldi near us we have a lidl and have saved loads of money since we started shopping there

Who wants to pay ridiculous money for packaging

NJE · 01/11/2011 22:04

YABU.
There was a documentary many years ago in Germany about Aldi/Lidl and why it's cheaper. It's the same food but other packaging and they do not advertise.

noddyholder · 01/11/2011 22:04

It is my corner shop! We have been here a month and I am seriously impressed

toptramp · 01/11/2011 22:08

I won't buy meat from Lidl any more. My shoulder of pork from there was absolutely minging; all fat and connective tissue whereas the same cut cooked in the same way from Tesco was delicious.

toptramp · 01/11/2011 22:10

It wasn't much more expensive either. I like lidl for fruit and veg, eggs, flour, yoghurt and random kids stuff. Christmas stuff is also good from there. i love the German gingerbread etc.

Stupify64 · 01/11/2011 23:23

No Aldi near me, but love Lidl. Tremendous educational value. Most DCs round these parts know exactly what you mean if you offer apfelsaft. German by osmosis - wunderbar!

Stupify64 · 01/11/2011 23:25

Tho' asking them if they'd like some Snakky Crakky can cause alarm to the uninitiated.
