Dog off lead running at DD in park

megcleary · 26/10/2011 16:19

AIBU to have roared at man who said oh he won't hurt her.

My comments on his dog owning skills included the fact there is no sign on the dog to say he won't attack DD, the dog should be on a lead, sign as you enter park and the dog did not return/ respond when he called it.

His response was to tell me to shut up.

I hate dogs on the loose in the park.

Susanne- you sound like a very responsible owner. The part of your post which resonates is about being able to do things on YOUR terms. As you rightly say, it's no good other owners saying 'my dogs fine' as an excuse for letting them run over and sniff/ lick your dog. You know your own dog, you aren't forcing it on anyone else and just ^want to be left alone to deal with your dog on your terms.

That's exactly the same principle I referred to earlier. I don't want some joker of a dog owner letting their dog nick food off me and then saying 'oh but shes harmless, and how helpful to your children to get used to dogs'

Er- no, I will decide when and 'how I'll get my children used to dogs thanks

cricketballs · 27/10/2011 12:54

the ridiculous comment was that they were banned from towns altogether, as in if some one lived in a town they wouldn't be allowed to have a dog as a pet!

Oh, and he did compare dogs to smallpox....

Goldenbrown1981 · 27/10/2011 12:55

Sardine? Are you purposefully reading everything backwards?

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 12:55

Incidentally reading through the thread again there is more than one comment on here suggesting that OP should not have had children.

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 12:56

I'm not andrew, I don't know why I'm being asked to respond to comments that he made.

I am asking about the comments saying that the OP was U as dogs needs exercise etc.

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 12:57

I'm not reading backwards, I'm reading the responses to the OP.

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 12:58

meg maybe you could call the council parks type people and say that there is a problem with dogs off leads in the on lead area. They might be able to advise you what to do, they might improve signage etc.

Worth a try Smile

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:00

Sorry just realised someone has already suggested that! I think it might make you feel better though, like you've "done something" IYSWIM

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:02

Like a post earlier that said that if one of their dogs had a "moment" and ran at a child and the child screamed or cried they would tell them to fuck off.

Why do people think like this?
Why do people behave like this?
How is it reasonable?

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:03

I once had a dog run up and knock my toddler over. If the owner had then told me to "fuck off" I would have been gobsmacked. Yet people think it is OK to post that this is how they behave?

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:04

I'll stop now Grin

DooinMeCleanin · 27/10/2011 13:04

No-one has said it does Sardine. Lets try and simplify it a bit. Point of view of dog owners/lovers on this thread in bullet points.....

  • Dogs should not be allowed off lead in on lead areas.
  • Children should be taught how to safely interact with dogs, including being taught not to scream
  • Dogs should be trained to recall immediately or kept on a training line/in a fenced, secure dog area.
  • Roaring at a dog will only serve to exascerbate the problem.
  • If you have a child who is scared of dogs it is sensible to stick to the on-lead sections of parks or dog free sections until you can teach them not to scream and attract dog's attentions.
  • If you have an allergic child it would be sensible to avoid off leash areas all together. It's not really fair, I know, but accidents happen, so do idiots unfortunately and life is not fair. I am allergic to cut grass. It sucks. I become really ill when the grass in the park is cut so I have to avoid the park all together. There are penty of on-lead areas you can enjoy. We should all learn to share space. Us dog walkers still using parks and facilities over the winter and rainy seasons are the reason why they kept so well maintained throughout the year, ready for summer. We never start threads in the summer moaning about all the children touching our dogs or the picnicers sitting in our favourite fetch spot, do we? No, we accept it is public* space and try our best to be curteous and considerate.
  • Banning dogs is over kill. Stating that people do not need dogs is bullshit. I need my dogs. My metal health suffers if I do not have a dog for companionship and exercise.

Have I missed anything?

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:06

It is incorrect to say that all the dog owners on this thread think that, Dooin.

Superene · 27/10/2011 13:07

Yes YABU. No need to roar at the poor man.

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:09

A case in point.

DownbytheRiverside · 27/10/2011 13:09

'Yes YABU. No need to roar at the poor man.'

Bless. Never mind, at least he's got his doggie to cuddle to make him feel all better at being roared at by the scary lady.

DooinMeCleanin · 27/10/2011 13:10

I am seperating 'dog owners' on this thread from the singular idiot who happens to have a dog, who us normal dog owning folk are pissed off with too. I only hope her dog doesn't one day wander upto someone who doesn't have as much control over their lead aggressive dog as I and Vampire do. For the dogs sake, not hers.

DejaWho · 27/10/2011 13:11

Dooin dangerously close to being calm and rational there! Don't wanna do that on here - you're akin to the devil if you even own a dog lead, let alone a dog at the end of the lead!

And yes, if you scream and yell at me AND MY DOG'S DOING NOTHING WRONG - you'll be told to fuck off. My dog is not interested in your kid, he's interested in that leaf by the side of the path further on down the road that something's peed on and smells hideously interesting (apparently). Doesn't stop the hystrionics as he plods steadily on by.

The one I particularly love is a parent flipping out as I walk by with two dogs on-lead... and the kid who the parent's flipping out about their abject terror's happily giving one of them a sneaky ear scratch as they wander by.

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:13

Dooin I don't understand your post. Who is the "singular idiot" - you say "her" but the person in the OP with the dog was a man?

thetasigmamum · 27/10/2011 13:13

While people may or may not feel they need dogs for other reasons, it is incorrect to say that you need a dog for exercise. It is perfectly possible to exercise without a dog. In fact, exercise would be a lot easier for runners and cyclists if there were fewer dogs. I just want owners to take responsibility for them properly and only let them off the leash when they will not bother other people (or dogs). And certainly not in areas where either off leash is banned or where dogs are completely banned (as was the case when my DS was attacked).

DogsBeastFiend · 27/10/2011 13:13

Yep Dooin, you've missed the fact that the dog in the OP was not a Staffie.

How do I know?

Because by fuck it would have been mentioned if he was!

Wink

On another note, Dooin, Many Tears is looking for a live in employee (must be single). Was almost tempted to put DD on ebay and apply for it until I saw that they might accept one pet along with the applicant.

That's put paid to that then, I'm not going anywhere without my German Shepherds, my Labrador or the cats and ferret! :o

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:14

But that's not what you said in your other post dejawho.

You said that your dogs don't always behave but you pay your taxes and so if anyone has a problem with that it is their problem.

SardineQueen · 27/10/2011 13:17

And then went on to say that if people "get in your dogs face" screaming then you will tell them to fuck off. But a person who is scared of dogs is not going to approach one, so I can only assume that you mean if your dog approaches someone and they scream you will tell them to fuck off.

That post was terribly aggressive.

thetasigmamum · 27/10/2011 13:17

Dejawho the dog that knocked over and bit my DS when he was 14 months old - what was he interested then? If he wasn't interested in trying to eat my DS? There were no leaves around, it was a beach (which it shouldn't even have been on). My DS had his back to the dog - as did I - it just suddenly appeared, bowled him over and started biting him. He didn't make a sound as he went into shock immediately. So tell me what that dog was interested in?

TheVampireEmpusa · 27/10/2011 13:17

"Dooin I don't understand your post. Who is the "singular idiot" - you say "her" but the person in the OP with the dog was a man?"

Read the thread, you'll work it out.
