To think that getting a large tattoo of your brother's name is a bit odd and silly?

My 18yo cousin has just got a large tattoo of her younger brother's name on her forearm.

She hasn't asked my opinion. It's her life and body so I won't give it, but I can't help being quietly Hmm

It won't be easy to cover up - it goes from elbow to wrist. Surely this will affect future job prospects? Or she'll always have to wear long sleeves.

Also, people will assume it's her partner, ex or son's name.

What was she thinking?

She wasn't thinking. Not got the equipment.

Northernlurker · 25/10/2011 18:20

Eh? That is a little odd. Actually that's very odd! Is her brother unwell? How much younger than her is he?

Angelico · 25/10/2011 18:24

Is there some kind of weird 'Cement Garden' thing going on here??? Confused

YANBU but to be honest it's her arm, she can smear it with catshit before an interview if she wants.

Be thankful you came from the side of the family with the smarts...

nenevomito · 25/10/2011 18:24

Vair strange. Not much else you can say really!

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 25/10/2011 18:25

YANBU to think this. that's your opinion.

i dont think it's odd. i also reckon, (and it's just a hunch) that if she has forked out for and commited to getting something permanent like a tattoo then she wont want to cover it up. as for job prospects it really depends on what she wants to do and wearing long sleeves for an interview isn't a big sacrifice in my book. there are some lovely long sleeved tops about. Wink

Chocolocolate · 25/10/2011 18:25

Her brother is 6 years younger, but perfectly fit and well.

For family members it's usually only done as a memorial Sad

AFKW you just reminded me of that poor girl. Never did see a back story on how or why that happened to her.

BedatHogwarts · 25/10/2011 18:28

It's a bit strange. I think I'd assume either her brother had died tragically, or maybe there was some sort of incest going on. I don't really understand name tattoos though - it seems much classier and less likely to cause future problems if you have a pictorial tattoo representing that person instead.

TheBestWitch · 25/10/2011 18:29

I don't see a problem with it. She is obviously close to her brother and the tattoo means something to her in the same way it would if someone got any other relatives name.
My sister has got a tattoo she designed herself of a charm bracelet with the symbol for sister as one of the charms. The other charms have the initials of my dc on. I had never considered it weird - just sweet. She is heavily tattooed and has never had a problem getting a job in a customer facing role - she just covers her tattoos if necessary. Even in summer she will were cool clothing that covers her. She always does this anyway as she's very fair skinned.
YABU to be giving it so much thought - it's not your arm.

diddl · 25/10/2011 18:29

Elbow to wrist?

Bloody hell!

Has he got a particularly long name?Blush

Andrewofgg · 25/10/2011 18:31

Silliest bloody tattoo I have seen in years: young woman working in Starbucks bending over to pick something up and revealing a swathe of her back. Like the gentleman I am I turned away but not before I had seen the tattoo which read YES THIS FUCKING HURT.

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 25/10/2011 18:34

andrew i think those kind are hilarious. if i were brave enough i might be tempted to get one saying something similar. i love tattoos. i just dont have the budget to match my desire. i will get there oneday though. each to their own.

Andrewofgg · 25/10/2011 18:42

Each to their own HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo

:o

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/10/2011 18:48

YABU. It's not a bit odd, it's absolutely bloody crackers.

Floggingmolly · 25/10/2011 18:52

Her brother's name? That is extremely weird Hmm
Wonder how she'll feel when she meets someone special and has to explain whose name it is? I'd run a mile from any bloke who had a tattoo of his sisters name.

squeakyfreakytoy · 25/10/2011 18:55

very weird... I dont get the names thing anyway, I think they are trashy looking.. on anyone.. by all means have a design that thas some meaning to the person you are having your tribute to... but names just look so tacky..

TheBestWitch · 25/10/2011 19:07

Haha. I have my husbands name. So I'm tacky and my sister is weird for having mine. Or maybe it's only the case for opposite sex siblings.

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 25/10/2011 19:11

i have my dc's initials. i dont look trashy or tacky. opinion isn't fact.

EricNorthmansMistress · 25/10/2011 19:19

I know a young woman who has her brother's name, they are twins and had a difficult upbringing. I thought it was quite sweet.

MrsStephenFry · 25/10/2011 19:21

that stars girl is a liar. There is no way on earth you fall asleep and stay asleep while having 53 stars tattooed on your face. That would raise you from a coma.

sheepgomeep · 25/10/2011 19:23

I have my 4 dc names tattoos on both my wrists incorporated into a design which I designed myself.

Ive already stated why I have tattoos on my wrists on other threads and I dont care if people regard them as tacky, they are there to serve a purpose for me.

I am well educated although I work p/t at the moment. It doesnt affect job prospects as they can be covered up. I really dont give a crap what people think.

Although I think even Id draw the line about putting my db name on my body.. Hes a bit of an arsehole!

NoobyNoob · 25/10/2011 19:43

YABU - you've no idea what the story is behind it, so stop being so judgey.

I contemplated having one of my younger brother, for personal reasons which have nothing to do with anyone but me and the people involved.

eatyourveg · 25/10/2011 19:45

I had a student last year who had her brothers name tattooed on her wrist. He was serving in Afghanistan at the time. I didn't think it was weird at all.

re job prospects, there was an interesting piece in the Times Education Supplement this week about a teacher with tattoos. See here.

Feminine · 25/10/2011 19:47

My sister has my name on her wrist.

It is done beautifully, in a light grey.
