To think that getting a large tattoo of your brother's name is a bit odd and silly?

My 18yo cousin has just got a large tattoo of her younger brother's name on her forearm.

She hasn't asked my opinion. It's her life and body so I won't give it, but I can't help being quietly Hmm

It won't be easy to cover up - it goes from elbow to wrist. Surely this will affect future job prospects? Or she'll always have to wear long sleeves.

Also, people will assume it's her partner, ex or son's name.

What was she thinking?

I think people are generalising their own relationships with brothers. I'm really close to my sister. I would have her name on my arm if I was having any more tattoos. I can't imagine it would be any different if I had a dearly loved brother. Can anyone explain why it's weird that it's her brother. Even if you don't like tattoos you would think it 'weird' if it said 'mum' or the name of a bf/dh. Are women not allowed to love their brothers as much as other family members?

mynewpassion · 25/10/2011 19:50

well my friend has her favorite food tattoed on her upper arm. I totally embarrassed myself when I couldn't figure out the design and said it was amazon floral foliage.

However, personally, I think tattoing is daft but hey, not my body. I do admire the artwork though.

GetOrfMo1Land · 25/10/2011 20:13

I know two girls who worked with each other who both went out one lunchtime and had their OWN names (Kellie and Kerry) tattooed on their own wrists in cursive script. They gigglingly showed me when they came back from lunch. I felt very old that day.

sue52 · 25/10/2011 20:29

I am very close to all my siblings and love my children. I don't understand people who need to ink their loved ones names all over themselves as a constant reminder of their affection.

SardineQueen · 25/10/2011 20:36

Better her brother's name than a boyfriend!

iMemoo · 25/10/2011 20:40

Are you sure she doesn't have a boyfriend with the same name as her brother?

PetisaPumpkinHead · 25/10/2011 20:46

YABU it's none of your business and I don't think it's odd or silly at all. It can be covered up with a different tattoo later on if she decides she doesn't like it in future anyway.

AnnieLobeseder · 25/10/2011 20:53

I'm a great fan of tattoos, as long as they are well-done and beautiful artistically. But I don't like names (or any writing really), and to get your brother's name is very weird. Yuk.

muffinino82 · 25/10/2011 21:02

I don't think YABU for feeling shocked - you can't help your reaction! However, (as you know) her body, her rules. My only concern is that I hope she had it done in an attractive script! Wink I have a phoenix on my shoulder that I chose for many reasons, some personal, some geeky Shockbut part of the reason was because my brother has a phoenix on his forearm. He was serving in Iraq at the time, although that's now by the by, and even though I obviously won't forget him, I liked the idea of having one that echoed his. He has a black one and I have a very colourful one that I love.

I don't think having your brother's name tattoed is any odder than having any other loved one's name.

ShriekingLisa · 25/10/2011 21:21

I have my two dcs names on my wrists. Nothing wrong in fact Im thinking of getting dhs name tattooed on me somehwere but dont know where. Dh is getting name tattooed on his arm from wrist to elbow along with our dcs names too.

MrsStephenFry · 25/10/2011 23:42

Getting your iwn name tattooed on your arm....heard it all now. Is it because they are so dim they might forget if they have to walk and talk at the same time?

Fiercelydoesit · 26/10/2011 00:00

Yanbu

Tattoos are ghastly altogether IMO. Don't know how I'll deal with it if either of my ds's want (or get) them - even if it's I LUV MUM. Hideous things.

Sorry, just messing with my noo iPad as I've no idea how it works!

HauntedHengshanRoad · 26/10/2011 05:15

Name tattoos are chav-beacons, especially when it's children's names. The names are almost always double-barrelled or spelled "uniquely" too.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 26/10/2011 13:34

I would prefer a pictorial representation if it were me but to be honest it is up to her and her arm is very easily covered for a job interview so YABU.

Nixea · 26/10/2011 13:58

Mandy, the girl with the stars later confessed to lying about it to cover her own back once her parents went ballistic at her.
Charming creature.

fuzzynavel · 26/10/2011 14:03

I'm not a lover of tattoo's personally but I don't really think it odd to have your brothers name if you were into them and wanted it.

YaMaYaMa · 26/10/2011 14:10

I wouldnt personally, as I think just having 'John' on my arm is probably the most boring tattoo I can imagine. Grin

Actually, I have just laughed quite loudly in the office at the idea

YaMaYaMa · 26/10/2011 14:12

Oooh shut up people saying name tats are tacky, I was tempted to get my daughter's name on my wrist a few months ago.

pinkgirlythoughts · 26/10/2011 14:22

I know a few people who have their own names tattooed on their wrists (or sometimes just their initials). Wouldn't do it myself.

helendigestives · 26/10/2011 14:25

Everyone I know with tattoos simply covers them up for job interviews, ascertains the company's policy regarding visibility and then dresses accordingly. Should she wish, there's also some very good cover-up that can be used.

sheepgomeep · 26/10/2011 14:31

HauntedHengshanRoad are they REALLY? My dc names are certainly not double barrelled or uniquely spelt. I am not chavvy. I don't own a staffy or a rottweiler wear tons of jewellery or anything else that defines me as a 'chavvy'. Horrible bloody word anyway and snobby.

I do know quite a few people with dc name tattoos and they haven't got double barrelled name either Confused

spiderpig8 · 26/10/2011 14:35

tattoos are chav beacons full stop.

helendigestives · 26/10/2011 14:58

Glad you cleared that one up for us, spiderpig. Hmm
