To think that you do not adhere to the packing protocol in Aldi, you should be banned?

It's not hard. It's load. Pack into trolley. Pay. Go and pack your shopping up like a snail at your own pace at the packing shelf.

I think that Aldi should employ someone with one of those big hoops on a long pole and when someone looks like they are going to start limp-wristedly packing their bags at the till/mouthbreathing over cashier going too fast, the hoop man gets the faffer around the neck with the hoop and drags them out. They are then banned from Aldi for ever.

Banhammered from Aldi, ha ha ha ha! The shame!

never been in aldi

should i know the packing protocol? do you have to sign a contract before you are allowed to shop there

notyummy · 25/10/2011 14:30

Agreed.

Next!

TheSkiingGardener · 25/10/2011 14:32

Been to Aldi, only bought a few things. Didn't know there was a packing protocol.

When does it get explained? Is there some kind of induction ceremony?

Ormirian · 25/10/2011 14:33

You are so right!

And no-one - I mean no-one can beat Aldi cashiers for speed. No matter how hard they try....

BupcakesandHaunting · 25/10/2011 14:33

There are massive blue and white signs at the till saying what the protocol is. Sight issues aside, even as a first time shopper it is not hard to pick up the jist of things. You can also see everyone else doing it. A bit like when you're only holiday in a forrin supermarket, you can work out what's going on by seeing what everyone else is doing.

OP posts:
wahwahwah · 25/10/2011 14:35

Noooooo, it is the people who, when the cashier has beeped everything through, have not packed anything and stand there with a startled expression as if they had not considered that they would actually have to pay for the stuff. Then they start looking for their purse...

TooEasilyTempted · 25/10/2011 14:35

YANBU. I can barely keep up with the cashier and get the stuff back into the trolley, never mind start packing at the till.

mousyfledermaus · 25/10/2011 14:35

yanbu
was at lidl today (same system) and one lady took her time packing everything in bags at the till.
grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Andrewofgg · 25/10/2011 14:35

Agree. And the same treatment for the types (in any supermarket) who wait till the cashier has started and then remember something they have forgotten and go back for it while a queue of customers waits.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 25/10/2011 14:37

I don't know, if you have the bigger supermarket bags, they just open out and you can fling stuff in there with abandon. No need to put the stuff in the trolley first and then go and pack. That's precious MNing time, that is. Shock

silverten · 25/10/2011 14:37

Only if they agree to sack every checkout operator who insists you do the packing elsewhere when there is no one else in the shop and you've only got half a trolley's worth of stuff.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 25/10/2011 14:37

I use their big bags. I load the belt in the order I want to pack stuff. I fling it all straight into the big bags and have my card ready to pay. It saves me going to the gym Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 25/10/2011 14:38

I think the employee with the hoop could be used to good effect in many supermarkets. People with too many items in the "five items or fewer" lane. Faffers. Those who cannot find their purse. Those who know the cashier, so spend time catching up on gossip while you wait behind, patiently.

I also think that old people should not be allowed to go shopping on a Saturday, unless it's an emergency, as they clearly have all week to do it.
(sort of joking on that last one.....)

coccyx · 25/10/2011 14:39

Rules is rules silverten!

notyummy · 25/10/2011 14:39

As a previous Aldi employee, I should explain that part of the reason that things are cheaper in there is they spend a lot less on staffing than other supermarkets (although the rates they pay people are higher than other supermarkets - but you are expected to work harder for it!) Therefore the skeleton staffing system is semi-reliant on them being able to process people much quicker at the till; hence the v speedy cashiers. The people who want to pack all their bags carefully at the till also should be aware that the staff have voodoo dolls of them made up in the staff loos......

tooearlymustdache · 25/10/2011 14:40

this would never happen in Waitrose!

(gawd, my finger has been hovering over the 'post message' button for ages Grin)

Ormirian · 25/10/2011 14:41

Aldi are all struggling to cope during the recession. According to the very nice chatty cashier in our local store they conveyor belts in many stores are only designed for small amts of shopping because that was all they used to be used for. Now with so many people doing their main shop there, the conveyor belts aren't big enough. Hence much more delay and huffing and puffing from other customers.

I almost don't dare show my face there since my saturday morning shop on week took up the entire conveyor belt Blush. I stopped to let 2 people with one item through but couldn't keep doing it. I had to just get on with it and ignore the shufflings and sighings and subliminal tuts. I was epxecting a round of applause when the cashier finished.

oldraver · 25/10/2011 14:42

Packing Protocol Shock But why do we go along with this kind of crap. So long as someone is not taking an age why do they have to be rushed along.

We're getting an Aldi/Lidl in town so will have to go along and have a look

BupcakesandHaunting · 25/10/2011 14:43

Packing a few items into a lareg bag would take the same amount of time as packing into a trolley - you would be safe from the Hoop of Doom.

"Agree. And the same treatment for the types (in any supermarket) who wait till the cashier has started and then remember something they have forgotten and go back for it while a queue of customers waits."

Angry X 3

A woman in Aldi did this a few months back. Swanned off to get forgotten things but took her time about it started perusing the olives. We were up next and I said to the cashier "I'm not waiting for her to come back" and the cashier did this indignant huff and went "Actually neither AM I!" and chucked all of her stuff into an empty trolley and made the silly woman re-join the queue when she returned with her Urgent Anitpasti. She was shocked. Obviously used to having the Waitrose staff licking her arse.

Gosh. That sounds ghastly. Like airport security procedure every timeyou want to get some shopping. I'll stick to wait-y-rose thanks.

diddl · 25/10/2011 14:46

"It's load. Pack into trolley. Pay. Go and pack your shopping up like a snail at your own pace at the packing shelf. "

Sorry, but I don´t get what you´re saying here at all.Blush

BupcakesandHaunting · 25/10/2011 14:46

"Packing Protocol But why do we go along with this kind of crap. So long as someone is not taking an age why do they have to be rushed along."

For the reasons that notyummy said. You're saving about a third on your shopping bill. The penance for that is you allow the cashiers to process purchases quickly. That is what Aldi is for, it is quick and cheap. If I want to exchange pleasant chitter-chatter whilst I pack my stuff at a leisurely pace, I go to Waitrose or Sainsbury's.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 25/10/2011 14:46

YANBU

In the old days they used to memorise all the prices - I have put stuff on the belt at one end and been told the final bill by the time I had my trolley in place at the checkout.

Ormirian · 25/10/2011 14:48

raspberry - I remember that too! I always used to be massively impressed. I wondered if they had to learn it like London taxi drivers doing 'the Knowledge'

Rowgtfc72 · 25/10/2011 14:48

I line everything up in the order I want it packed and shove it in my bag quick ! I'm much quicker than the old dears that have to put everything carefully in their trolley, and I remember to smile and say "bye" as I do it !
