To think that you do not adhere to the packing protocol in Aldi, you should be banned?

It's not hard. It's load. Pack into trolley. Pay. Go and pack your shopping up like a snail at your own pace at the packing shelf.

I think that Aldi should employ someone with one of those big hoops on a long pole and when someone looks like they are going to start limp-wristedly packing their bags at the till/mouthbreathing over cashier going too fast, the hoop man gets the faffer around the neck with the hoop and drags them out. They are then banned from Aldi for ever.

Banhammered from Aldi, ha ha ha ha! The shame!

Oh - and I had no idea about the packing rules until I read about it on here - our Lidl doesn't have signs up.

garlicBreathZombie · 25/10/2011 16:26

Had some teenagers round my house, made posh toasties.
The following day, visited some other teenagers in their town, made posh toasties.

I bought:
2 part-baked ciabatta loaves
1 pat of butter
1 jar of red pesto
2 packs of prosciutto
1 lump of mozarella
fresh basil
dried mixed herbs

from Aldi for £12.50
The next day, I bought the same from Waitrose for £27 Shock

Plus, the Aldi pesto jar was twice as big as Waitrose's.

We've actually got an Aldi close to where we live now - has always been Lidl before, so I'd be grateful for any suggestions on what is good / should be avoided. Have a giant Tesco opposite, so tend to go there, but cutting shopping bills would be good!

Bugsy2 · 25/10/2011 16:29

Diddl, I am so thick - please explain. Does your DH have the crate in the trolley when he is shopping? If not, where is it? I'm not quite getting how he unloads the shopping & packs the crate - unless there is a giant queue & you have time to unload, pack, stand around, grow to hate the person in front of you, lose the will to live & then start packing. I guess that must be it?
so is crate packing acceptable, but bag packing not acceptable?
So many questions - keen to get the ALDI / LIDL ettiquette right! [hgrin]

diddl · 25/10/2011 16:30

"DH is a bit of a food snob so not sure he'd be up for that."

So if you cook something, does he demand to see the packaging to check where it´s from?

There maybe are some things that aren´t as good.

But you don´t know until you try.

I do think that in the expression "food snob", the word snob should sometimes be changed to mug!

Funtimewincies · 25/10/2011 16:31

I've never seen signs and had no idea that there was a facist regime protocol in operation. Mind you, I'm 5' and maybe there were out of my eyeline. I don't tend to shop staring upwards.

The cashiers haven't put me right either .

Georgimama · 25/10/2011 16:31

internet shopping is all I can say to you lot of nutters. not one, not two, but three lovely men brought my shopping to my door today.

PinotScreechio · 25/10/2011 16:32

Get the giant shopping bags that can fit a small child in, line them up in a row of 4 in your trolley, plus one for fruit & veg hanging off the handbag hook by the kid seat.

Sling stuff in as she whizzes it through, straight into the bags.

Soft stuff gets on the conveyor belt last, ergo lands on top of the bags so no crushing.

Voilá!
Cheap shopping all packed in one swift move = smug me.

I thank you.

diddl · 25/10/2011 16:34

Yes, the crate folds up so is on it´s edge near the handles when he shops.

Then he loads stuff onto the belt & "unfolds" the crate into the trolley.

Yes, there´s usually a queue-it wouldn´t work if you´re still unloading & they´re putting stuff into another trolley.

I´ve never come across that tbh.

diddl · 25/10/2011 16:38

Where I am, if you´re not buying a trolleyful, it´s not unusual to put stuff into your own basket/bag, empty that onto the belt & then load it up again.

lovingthecoast · 25/10/2011 16:42

Diddl, when he's here he does most of the cooking. And I think he is a snob ie no solid basis for a lot of it. Last weekend we had friends stay who had come to see newborn DS2. Despite having a newborn and 3 other kids to run around after trying to make sure the house was in a reasonable state, DH insisted that certain items were in the fridge, on the cupboards and next to the cooker. He would rather they didn't come than they saw Tesco value table salt in the cupboard! Grin

Bugsy2 · 25/10/2011 16:42

Like the idea but think the folding crate would test my competence levels to the limit. Can just see myself wrestling with folding crate at the till and then being viciously head looped off to the side Bupcakes for being inefficient. Think maybe Pinot's child sized bags, possibly with very small child inside working as a minature packer may work better!

startail · 25/10/2011 16:44

Glad I've never shooed at Aldi, this would really piss me off.
Just a way of employing less till staff like those awful automatic tills.

notyummy · 25/10/2011 16:45

I would Hmm at your DH Loving....but I did once refill a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin with Tesco Basics stuff, so I am obviously not beyond that sort of thing myself. Grin Having said that, I think I've outgrown snobbery on the whole and base it on how it tastes.

PinotScreechio · 25/10/2011 16:45

notyummy :o Years of practice! Years! arf

notyummy · 25/10/2011 16:47

Well, yes it is Star - but it has been part of the business model from the start, and it is a key reason in keeping store running costs down and prices for the customers down. It also ensures steady levels of profit for the Albrecht family....but I don't think anyone thought it was a not-for-profit organisation.

aldiwhore · 25/10/2011 16:48

My DH is a food snob and actually prefers some of Aldi's foods to anything the supermarket can offer.

I'm a complete basics queen, and though there are some brands I will buy because they are the best in my opinion, there are thousands of others that you can get in a basic's version that are equally as good. Trial and error.

Aldi has some amazing food in at Christmas, their puddings are the best.

diddl · 25/10/2011 16:50

"Like the idea but think the folding crate would test my competence levels to the limit."

They´re really easy.

When you lift an empty one by the handles, they sort of just fall into place!

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 25/10/2011 16:51

I especially like apricot jam from Aldi. And the prosciutto (but not together).

No-one has mentioned my main problem with shopping at Aldi - the Special Buys. The ones that you didn't realise you couldn't do without each week.

ReindeerBollocks · 25/10/2011 16:53

Star - the upshot is you pay less (and get out quicker!).

I hate people packing at the end of the till and taking an age, so I like to use Pinots trick and still fling the items in, the protocol is really clear so its not like the cashiers are being rude, they are just trying to do their job as quickly as possible.

Plus Tesco staff here are really horrid, there is one lady who always asks for ID, even when I have DH and the DCs in tow. I'm sure she does it just to spite me as goodness knows I look old and haggard enough for wine.

lovingthecoast · 25/10/2011 16:53

Notyummy, your post has made me laugh because Bombay Sapphire gin was on the list of must haves. No cheap gin allowed. Having said that, I do think you can taste the difference when it comes to gin. Grin

garlicBreathZombie · 25/10/2011 16:54

YY, raspberry, the special buys!!

Just off for another dehumidifier ...

aldiwhore · 25/10/2011 16:55

Ah the 'special buys' Pavlova torches with the power of a thousand candles, wellies socks, socket sets and other things you never knew you really needed!

As far as carrier bags go, I shove everything back in the trolley and load the stuff into bags at the car, because that's where the bags always are. It does feel odd leaving a supermarket with unpacked shopping, but I hang on to my receipt!

lovingthecoast · 25/10/2011 16:56

But what if it's pouring?
