about SIL and DS1's Bris (circumcision) ?

I'm Jewish (Liberal) and DH counts himself as secular Jewish (as does all of his family).
His DBro (my BIL) married out - not a 'big' thing with them due to the whole non practicing/secular thing.

I'm due to give birth to DS1 (DC2) in a week.

They do not have children and it is only DH and BIL as siblings. our DC1 is a DD.

Both DH and BIL are circumcised.

She told us tonight that she would not be coming to DS1 Bris. The idea of doing that 'disgusts' her.

AIBU to be really upset and to think that she should have realised that marrying into a jewish family secular or not would mean that these sort of things would happen?

This has really really upset me - I have never got a hint of her feeling like this before.

Urine is a natural healer fairly sure that is a myth, but if you can find it on the NHS site I'd be interested.

The 'not cutting' seems also to be a myth as if you go to any Jewish site about it they will show you the knife.

As for the salvation thing I used the word as a shortcut. A Jewish father is required to have his son circumcised, but it doesn't specify what penalty he incurs for not doing so. Maybe a general one for not obeying god?

Any Jewish person here could clear that up if they wanted and tell us how god feels about people who don't circumcise their kids.

GColdtimer · 26/10/2011 12:56

Sharrie, I am really glad you changed your mind about circumcising your son. (If i read that correctly?)

PosiesOfPoison · 26/10/2011 12:59

Yes, about urine, all those women who tear in birth and complain about wee stinging....all liars.

"The uncircumcised male whose foreskin has not been circumcised, shall have his soul cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant." Genesis. But this is the part where God made the world right?

Maimonides (Moses ben Maimon "Rambam", CE 1135-1204), who apart from being a great Torah scholar was also a physician and philosopher, argued that circumcision acts to repress sexual pleasure and serves as a common bodily sign to members of the same faith."

Why is God so obsessed with sex?

GalloweesG · 26/10/2011 13:00

A vote to ban in San Fran

PigletJohn · 26/10/2011 13:04

"Why is God so obsessed with sex?"

I think any obsession lies with the people who claim to know what their particular god wants. Luckily there seem to be lots of gods who all want different things.

PigletJohn · 26/10/2011 13:08

Good grief!

That link opens by saying "evidence that circumcising boys is the best way to reduce the spread of HIV"

That's insane!

"Best" Shock Shock

How about using condoms, not being involved in prostitution, avoiding unprotected sodomy, not sharing used needles?

PigletJohn It's the New Scientist too! At least it's being robustly challenged.

Popbiscuit · 26/10/2011 14:33

Wow...just catching up here. There appears to be some confusion and misinformation on this thread. Circumcision for medical reasons is a different procedure from the routine (less so now) newborn circumcision that takes place every day in hospitals and doctors offices in North America. My two sons are both circumcised as is my Canadian DH (and just about every one of his Canadian peers). It was done in two minutes using a plastic ring. No cutting, no blood, baby fine immediately afterward. Done in GP's office by a Dr. with 40 years experience. No infections, no complications, no pain, no blood. Two healthy, happy little boys and a DH with no regrets or issues about it whatsoever. Baby immunizations were far more distressing from my end of things. There you have it, straight from the horses mouth.

PigletJohn · 26/10/2011 14:36

horses' mother, surely.

GalloweesG · 26/10/2011 14:39

PopBiscuit - Routine does not equal right. Plenty of men are furious that there anatomy was altered without their consent. I'm sure if you went through the medical records of "every man in Canada" you would be sure to find some complications.

onagar · 26/10/2011 14:51

The skin is held taut and using a special very sharp knife or scalpel the skin is cut flush with the shield with one sweep of the blade familymedicine

A metal knife, called an izmail is used to perform the circumcision. circlist.com

The father picks up the surgical knife and hands it to the mohel, Circumcision-Procedure

Links for those people who think there is no cutting.

Yes we know there are other ways for doctors to do it which may be less painful, but this is the proper way and any pain is too much if doing it for no reason.

PosiesOfPoison · 26/10/2011 14:54

Popbiscuit. No cutting and no blood, but skin was removed? Isn't that impossible? I wear a ring everyday on my finger but it doesn't magically drop off.

LaFilleSurLePont · 26/10/2011 14:55

I feel like a broken record here, but there is pain, blood and cutting with the plastibell method too,and that's just one method amongst several.

'The Plastibell Circumcision Device is a clear plastic ring with handle designed for male neonatal circumcision that has a deep groove running circumferentially. The adhesions between glans and foreskin are divided with a probe. Then the foreskin is cut longitudinally to allow it to be retracted and the glans (the head of penis) to be exposed. The Plastibell comes in 6 sizes. The appropriate one is chosen and applied to the head. The ring is then covered over by the foreskin. A ligature is tied firmly around the foreskin, crushing the skin against the groove in the Plastibell. Then the excess skin protruding beyond the ring is trimmed off. Finally, the handle is broken off at the end of the procedure. The entire procedure takes five to ten minutes, depending on the experience and skill of the surgeon. The ring falls off in 3 to 7 days leaving a circumferential wound that will heal over the following week. Typically, the glans will appear red or yellow until it has cornified.'

onagar · 26/10/2011 14:56

It could be worse. At least it seems most have stopped performing Metzitza B'Peh - oral suction

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 26/10/2011 14:58

It's amazing how a tiny bit of internet research blows all of these excuses out of the water. No blood, yet red staining of the nappy? I haven't yet found a source that backs up this miraculous disappearing of the foreskin by waving a magic wand at it.

PosiesOfPoison · 26/10/2011 14:58

I don't know about others but I find it quite bizarre that anyoine still does this in 2011.

GalloweesG · 26/10/2011 15:02

Only the unthinking and unquestioning.

Me too Sad Angry

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 26/10/2011 15:11

"they were a bit worried about pain (they would have had the same worry should they have needed a tooth extraction instead) "

he didn't need his foreskin removed.

Popbiscuit · 26/10/2011 15:19

And we all know that everything you read on the internet is correct, don't we? Confused. Just wanted to say that I'm a real-life mother of circumcised boys and the real-life wife of a circumcised man and I can tell you that the hysterical and bloody descriptions above are quite different from what I have actually observed.
No blood on nappies either. Sorry to disappoint.

I'm going to hide this thread now and let you all get on with it.

porcamiseria · 26/10/2011 15:22

hey at least it unites the jews and muslims eh

ban circumcism, but peace in the middle east!

porcamiseria · 26/10/2011 15:23

I dont really like the idea BUT I also think MN gets into SUCH a tussle about this

whilst this thread has been going on, how many people have died through violence and torture????
