My dd went for sleepover at 13 year olds friends house and as a film to watch was shown the human centipede. Apparently downloaded.
What would you do?
Would you let your own dd for go for sleepover at their house again?
I am very annoyed about this.

Ok well maybe mumsnet should block old threads not everyone checks what date something is posted when its in active.

Canuckduck · 09/11/2022 02:51

Of course it’s not ideal and yes it’s disgusting but thirteen year olds are not always forthcoming! They are also very capable of downloading things without consent.

I would be more concerned with the Mom going out boozing and no adult being home or sober. If the are going to be home alone I’d want to know in advance.

Snoozer11 · 09/11/2022 02:51

I think once they reach 14, you have to be accept that sleepovers aren't going to be braiding hair and watching Spongebob Squarepants.

I also think the idea of constant supervision is a bit questionable.

I would hate to watch the Human Centipede, although I might have thought differently at that age. I think there's a big difference between putting on a horror film as part of a group, when they're all watching it together, and sitting alone in the dark watching it.

I saw all sorts of 15 and 18 rated films when I was under that age.

Oh ffs!

ilovepuppies2019 · 09/11/2022 04:07

I wouldn't be happy but I would be as annoyed, if not more annoyed, with DD than the parents. At 14 she needed to stand up and say I don't want to watch this after she understood that it was gory. I would have and I think it's a really important life skill to have to stand up for yourself and decide what is or isn't in you own best interests. I would be worried and questioning her on why she didn't feel confident enough to tell the others to stop or call you and ask for a pick up. She's going to be exposed to worse than this soon and she needs to feel confident enough to walk away from situations that she doesn't feel comfortable with.

If the parents of the child knew about the film then I would be horrified but I think that that is unlikely. More than likely the girl downloaded it without her parents knowing and thought she would be clever. It happens are sleep overs and the level of adult supervision needed to ensure that nothing inappropriate is viewed in a world of screens and teenagers is ridiculous. Kids have to empowered to know what they do and don't want to watch. The parents saying that they would be icy and furious that a 14 year old was allowed to access something on her screens that the parents didn't know about - don't throw stones in glass houses. Parents often have no idea what their kids are doing and most attempts to stop them are easily evaded. You may think that you know exactly what your kids have seen but it's unlikely.

Hell no! I am 30 and I wouldn't watch it!

I'm, older than 30, and I'd not watch it , either, having just read a synopsis.

It's called ''Torture porn'' in the description, and sounds absolutely revolting.

A degree of supervision is definitely needed when having sleepovers.

Oh ffs!

WHO woke the ZOMBIE?

There should be locks put on old posts to prevent resurrection of ZOMBIES.

HoppingPavlova · 09/11/2022 04:47

Did the parents know? If so - I'd tear them a new one. If not - I'd raise, with icy condescension, the lack of supervision over internet use that has allowed a 14 year old to download a graphic and perverted 18 film, and how the children were able to watch it without a parent being aware.

Not that simple I’m afraid. Back when it came out, a friends Yr6 child (12yo) was given it on a thumb drive at school by another child. Told older 14yo sibling who put thumb drive into a tv in a spare living room where they were caught watching it, but had already seen more than you would want - personally I believe 1second is too much and whatever sick mind thought that up should be locked away.

If it had happened at my house I’d be mortified and definitely want to know. At 12yo a child knows that shit is inappropriate to watch so both kids are also at fault for actually watching it so blame all around with this one.

I don’t understand this. I had a job for decades where I was routinely exposed to blood, gore and mangled bodies. Even so, reading the synopsis of this when it came out made my stomach turn, it’s absolutely disturbing shit. If my adult kids watched this I’d be seriously worried as I honestly think you need to have something quite wrong with you to be able to watch it.

Gh12345 · 09/11/2022 05:06

I usually would say no let them watch older films, until I read it was The Human centipede. It’s awful

Joystir59 · 09/11/2022 05:12

My friend was a centipede segment in Human Centipede 2. He had a lot of fun acting in it.

Magentax · 09/11/2022 05:20

As OP’s daughter is now fully
adult we can find out if it did cause any long term issue!

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2022 05:58

Another day, another trip in the MN time machine. Hmm

bluetongue · 09/11/2022 06:14

Eh, if that’s the worst thing that happened and you daughter told you about it then it’s not really the end of the world. I was a pretty tame teen but even I watched some pretty bad horror movies at sleepovers. Not to mention raiding the parents’ alcohol cabinet and getting drunk a few times at around 14. I was in the ‘nerd’ group at high school.

Honestly for a 14 year old there’s much, much worse things she could be doing. Drugs, alcohol, even having sex and getting pregnant. Better the devil you know I think.

Oh lord, I just read the post not the date 🤦‍♀️

DNBU · 09/11/2022 07:54

It’s of passage to watch a scary film at a sleepover, but The Human Centipede is such an awful film.

I would ‘t stop them from going to a sleepover there again but I would say something to the parents next time she goes there, along the lines of ‘DD said they watched The Human Centipede last time.. I know teens love scary films but that one crosses a line for me as it’s so graphic, it’s too much even for me. Please don’t let them watch stuff like that, it’s too disturbing. I’d rather pick DD up in that situation.

Redglitter · 09/11/2022 03:14

Zombie thread!!!!

The OPs daughter is 25 now

I would bet money that she's grown up to be a normal well-adjusted adult after going through the perfectly normal teenage rite of passage of illicitly watching a scary/gross film.

Clawdy · 09/11/2022 08:07

DS went to a sleepover at a friend's years ago and they watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre, aged 12. This was the same friend whose mum wouldn't let him watch Grange Hill because it was "unsuitable "!

Naimee87 · 09/11/2022 09:49

This is awful! I would 100% be complaining to the parents and no longer letting my DS(also 13) sleepover. I know that kids watch horror and for them its exciting /dangerous but knowing my DS he would not forget those images and would have a million questions. I havent seen the film but know of it. Vile and gross and not even something adults should find entertaining. Disgusting!

Violashift · 09/11/2022 21:57

Interesting that the parents view 10 years later are more realistic and not as pearl clutching.

Stationsofthecross · 09/11/2022 22:05

OMG no. I would be horrified. I banned that film in my home. Disgusting.

TabsKane · 09/11/2022 22:05

YANBU. I’m very liberal but I’m so against that sick film

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2022 22:17
