My dd went for sleepover at 13 year olds friends house and as a film to watch was shown the human centipede. Apparently downloaded.
What would you do?
Would you let your own dd for go for sleepover at their house again?
I am very annoyed about this.

My dad bought The Exorcist for me when I was 13, when it had been re-released. He didn't even look at the box. He also used to get out films from The Omen series for me and my friends aged 13 upwards when we had sleepovers, again without checking at all.

I only found out years later that one of my friends was scared shitless after watching The Exorcist and slept in her mum's bed for about a month after! But she still continued coming to sleepovers and watching the films (as we sometimes do now for nostalgic purposes) and her mom apparently didn't say anything to my parents as they didn't veto them. Confused

I will definitely be keeping a better eye on my own kids' choices of films, programmes and websites. I was never disturbed by any of the stuff I found and could 'police myself' quite effectively but I think that's more luck than anything else.

LordOfTheFlies · 25/10/2011 19:54

I've seen the HC (twice sort of. First time I CBA contuing, it was soooo bad. Then I had to watch it for closure) I was praying for Mad Scientist to pull the pool cover over the dark haired girl and leave her.She got on my wick.
The idea of the film is bleurg but the acting is dire.

The Exorcist is a scary film.Even now it's so dated, I couldn't watch it at home. Fine in a cinema.

My DS says some of his friends play Call of Duty (I know one does, the other parents say they don't) My DS knows I won't let him play it but I'll bet money at some time he will. Then he'll understand why there's censorship and age ratings.

Children have always tried to push the boundaries with films. I did-and ended up with nightmares after The Evil Dead when I was 16.[hblush]

lucymr · 25/10/2011 20:00

I would definitely have a word with the mother - that film is horrific

WitchesAreComing · 25/10/2011 20:05

I read the Wiki link last night and it really disturbed me. As a previous poster said, the premise is deeply misogynistic and exactly like the worst kind of humiliating torture pornography. The composition of the centipede with the most unpleasant and painful aspects being given to the two women (who are also the parts with no voice) is no accident.

Not on a par with The Shining or The Exorcist and not in any way acceptable. YANBU.

Did you actually read my post of Mon 24-Oct-11 16:34:12 before responding to it on Mon 24-Oct-11 18:05:31? I think not.

I actually pointed out that the principal issue of the thread as far as I was concerned was people making decisons about other people's children while they are under their care. I said that I wouldn't dream of putting on a film like the Human Centipede for fear of a provoking a backlash just like the one described here in this thread. So, far from condoning the view that "people can do what the fridge they like" as you put it with other people's children, I was stating that people should totally avoid doing anything that is likely to offend or provoke a full scale moral panic.

zippey · 10/06/2012 02:59

Most people on here are condeming something without watching it. Ive watched it, found it a bit creepy, but its really not all that bad a film. People will watch or listen to things when they have a high profile or is banned. Id be more worried about the mainstream sexualisation and body image issues given off by pop videos and magazines that kids access daily than a one off video nasty film. Nothing bad ever came from watching films like the Excorsist, Evil Dead etc. (apart from nightmares), in fact they are now regarded as game-changing movies.

For a good thinking persons gross out movie, watch Martyrs. That was pretty intense I thought.

comedycentral · 10/06/2012 06:46

I would let the parents know because I bet they don't.

dubbada · 10/06/2012 06:49

what is it?

StealthPolarBear · 10/06/2012 06:51

old thread!!

ginmakesitallok · 10/06/2012 06:53

October chaps - October

sashh · 10/06/2012 06:53

OK so let me see if I got this right.

DD is 14 and went to a sleepover where the parents went out. They watched a film that is not age appropriate and your daughter isn't bothered.

The film was downloaded so probably not legal.

I think YANBU - your dd was left with other teenagers, no adult supervision - which I assume you would provide if the sleepover was at your house to take part in an illegal activity. OK yes I'm over dramatising a bit, but only a bit.

I'm also a bit woried that your daughter wasn't upset / bothered.

StealthPolarBear · 10/06/2012 06:55

the DD may well be 15 now :o

sashh · 10/06/2012 07:23

oops, yes stealth, didn't look at the start date of the thred

I'm a massive horror fan but human centipede is absolutely gross and obscene. I couldn't watch it all the way through.

As a parent I'd never allow my daughter to watch it, and if I'd let her friends watch it on a sleepover I would expect an angry mob of parents to be knocking on my door the next day

Kat311011 · 10/06/2012 09:17

I've watched this film and its very disturbing. I would be fuming if my child had been allowed to watch this at a sleepover.

Nanny0gg · 10/06/2012 09:27

I don't understand your reasoning for not speaking to the girl's parents, OP.
They might not see anything wrong with it (clearly, as they knew what the girls were watching) but it wouldn't hurt to let them know that other parents aren't quite so happy. Might make them think twice in the future.
(Do you know what any of the other parents thought about it?)

Nanny0gg · 10/06/2012 09:30

Bugger!! First time I've been caught out by a Zombie thread!
That'll teach me to read threads properly first. I wondered why some of the Grin had Halloween hats on!

quirrelquarrel · 10/06/2012 10:19

We were shown The Ring in Y9 English. But we stopped just before the end!
I had to block my mind before bed for a year- too scary for words- all I remember is my pathetic English teacher pointing out- look, children, at all that great pathetic fallacy, look how much we can learn from er...other mediums...

OldGreyWiffleTest · 10/06/2012 11:13

WHY do people resurrect OLD THREADS?

zippey · 10/06/2012 11:24

Why do people have a problem when old threads are resurrected? People comment on threads new and old because it resonates with them or because they find the topic interesting enough to comment on. Its also perfectly legal. If MM did not want old threads to be resurrected then they should delete threads after they pass a certain date (eg 2 months).

chloekitten · 10/06/2012 16:15

Sorry I didnt see this before I put my question about children watching horror - I would (and did) talk to the parents about this. It is a violation of your daughters mind IMO. I would not allow my child to go there again, unless there was a cast iron guarantee that they understood what was appropriate and never allowed inappropriate material to be shown again to your daughter.

What stupid parents allow this mind filth into their childrens bedrooms? (and yes, I believe it is their job to know, even if the child downloaded it behind their backs. They should be bobbing in with biscuits and stuff to make sure they know whats going on and whats being watched).

WhiteWidow · 10/06/2012 16:19

In all honesty if it was the first one, it's not that bad. She's 14, im surprised she hasn't seen worse.

If it was the second one I'd feel sorry for her eyes. It's the worst bloody horrific film ever. I was sick in my mouth.

WhiteWidow · 10/06/2012 16:20

Oops didn't see how old this was. Who finds these Christ!
