to think I have the right to give my pay & display ticket to someone elce if I wish.

Many local pay & display car parks are now installing machines that force you to add your registration number to the ticket so that you cannot pass any unused time on to another parker. I think this is a bloody liberty! If I have paid for 2 hours parking and unexpectedly get back after only an hour, I should get a refund if I'm not permitted to pass on the ticket. Apart from boycotting these places, I'd love to know if there's another way to get my own back.

All the machines are like that where I live. It's a shame but it's not something that gets me especially riled tbh

Our machines aren't like that however the tickets say not transferable, I have seen car park attendants ticket people for passing tickets on to other motorists.

Ddin't someone suggest putting in a false reg like P155 OFF or something?

Not brave enough to risk a £30 fine though to try it

I agree its annoying but its a tough business getting council budgets to balance so better get used to it.

You've never had the legal right to pass it on. They are just using technology to enforce something they struggled to before.

YANBU! If I've paid for a number of hours parking, I should be able to pass it on to somebody else if I so wish. Random acts of kindness make people feel good and I always appreciate it if somebody passes their ticket to me. But sorry, can't think of a way of getting your own back :(

also a gripe of mine is the fact they do not give change. It is easy enough to do but the councils do not install the change compartments as they get extra money for nothing.

i try to bring correct change needed in 5p's so it fills up the darn machine and goes out of order! i have no idea if this happens when the machines are full, but some wise man in the pub told me it does!

technically I think YABU because it's their carpark, their rules, rather than natural justice and a human right, but I agree with MrsVestibule - the random act of kindness aspect makes it kind of important to be able to pass on your ticket.

social cohesion and the Big Society and all that.

You can't do the P155 0ff as they don't want letters, just numbers, at least not round here. My numbers are '04' so that means that, technically, I could pass it to another car with those numbers in, not like they can prove it was not theirs...But not sure that is particularly harsh on the council etc...

i agree that if you pay for two hours then you own them two hours of renting a space. If you choose to then pass it onto someone then you are well within your rights.

I hate pay and display parking with a passion.

I am happy to pay for however long I have been when I leave , but I hate & detest trying to decide how long I want to park for in advance.

I love being able to pass the unused portion of my ticket on - when that arrives around here I will be less than impressed!

I once offered my ticket to a man in a White van on my way put. He was carparlimg attendant and not impressed.

YANBU...if you've paid for a space for 2 hours then it's yours for 2 hours and you should be able to give it away if you want. Most of the time it's impossible to know how long you are going to be...I'm always having to either rush back to the car to add more time or leaving with an hour still left.

i'd love to know the legal position.
I passed mine on to a woman lately accompanied by a bit of a rant. We got chatting, turned out she was the wife of one of the attendants. She was laughing though!

it's stupid just putting in numbers as all new cars only have 2 numbers per year....I think they will have to come up with a new solution

he was abusive and looked at me like i was shite

Usually the small print on the sign states that you can't pass a ticket on and therefore if you park and pay you are agreeing to abide by their rules and enter into a contract with them. Soooo... YABU.

However - so am I as I always do it!

There's a carpark round here that you have to put your full reg in but my car been 30 years old doesn't have enough letters/numbers. I always have to make up random ones to fill in the blanks which annoys me.

MsVestebule you are right on the money. It's lovely to put a smile on someone's face when they are rummaging around for shrapnel in the bottom of their bag by giving them an hours parking. It gives them and me a warm happy feeling.
