To not want to give this man his money back

I sold a buggy today, as seen h was happy with it and paid £200 which was cheap anyway. Twenty minutes later I got a text saying it doesn't fit through their front door and will I take it back.

I explained how to take the wheels off but no he is still saying it won't fit. I've already put the money in one of those pots you have to smash to get the money put of and feel a bit miffed I'm now going to have to smash it to take it out. But have I agreed reluctantly, I would be unreasonable not to take it back wouldn't I?! I still feel annoyed though

Um no I don't have £200 spare cash.

I like the pots because I put more money on than I would a bank account Smile

You are nicer than me, OP. I wouldn't be giving a refund because someone bought before checking something.

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 15:20

Am starting to think sod it no I'm not going to refund.

Good for you!

notlettingthefearshow · 14/10/2011 15:43

Of course you should give him the money back. It's an oversight on his behalf but quite a hassle for him to return it, so he would only do it if necessary. You can bet he won't make that mistake again!

If the buggy's a steal then you won't have any problems shifting it to someone else.

larrygrylls · 14/10/2011 15:43

I just don't get this one.

Why can't the buyer resell it. Why do you have to go through the aggro and expense? Not sure I see the karma angle either. He has what he bought; there was no deceit or hard sell involved and, as it was already second hand, he can resell it. So, he has to put himself out a little due to his own carelessness. Isn't that how life is meant to work?

whiteoleander · 14/10/2011 15:46

he's changed his mind, probably lying, and taking advantage of your good nature - although he knows where you live I guess - not a great situation OP. I guess better to be on the safe side.

unavailable · 14/10/2011 15:54

Of course you are legally entitled to refuse a refund, but I think you should. Its a bit meanspirited to take the "it's not my problem" attitude.

Be nice!

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 15:57

Even if refund is going to cost me money in replacing the pot?

OP posts:
NinkyNonker · 14/10/2011 15:58

If you do decide to then a refund minus sensible costs...price of pot plus advertising last time and next seems fair.

unavailable · 14/10/2011 16:01

I would tell him you agree minus the cost of a replacement pot if you have to smash it to access the money. If he quibbles, he is unreasonable. The deal is then off and you still have the warm glow of knowing you tried to do a kindness.

patindahat · 14/10/2011 16:20

Just make sure it is your pushchair (and in the condition that you sold it) that you are getting back if you decide to refund. Some tricky folk about.

Chulita · 14/10/2011 16:30

I can't believe the consensus is that it would be mean not to refund it! My pushchair didn't fit through the door of the last house we had but I wouldn't take it back because of that, my fault for not checking and I got around it. How would it be mean? I really don't get it...

KatieMortician · 14/10/2011 16:45

It's his problem, not yours. Why should the OP be put out more than this man and his silly mistake?

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 14/10/2011 16:48

I wouldn't give it back either. It's not your responsibility to check the width of his doors fgs. Mothercare have never come out to my house and checked if whatever I'm buying fits in my house. If it tried to take something back on those terms they'd quite rightly refuse. Let him sell it on.

QueenStromba · 14/10/2011 17:04

I wouldn't give him the money back even if the money wasn't in one of those pots. I think you're mad for considering it given the pot would cost £20 to replace. There's no reason he can't sell it on himself.

MollyTheMole · 14/10/2011 17:30

nah, I wouldnt give it back even if it was just sitting in my purse, sold as seen an all that....

ShroudOfHamsters · 14/10/2011 17:32

I would say I would give it back if he would reimburse me for the pot.

So give him back the money less price of pot.

And if you manage to get the notes out without breaking the pot, you're quids in Grin

pictish · 14/10/2011 17:35

Of course you have to give him his money back! OMG!
If YOU bought a buggy that didn't fit through your front door for £200 you'd take it back!!

Stuff your stupid pot. Ridiculous.

pictish · 14/10/2011 17:38

Abd it's not his problem that you put it in the pot either. He paid you £200 for something that is no good to him!

What the hell is wrong with people these days??!! Confused

LaurieFairyCake · 14/10/2011 17:38

I wouldn't give him his money back (I might if he was ultra nice and I actually believed him) but If there was the teeniest hint of entitlement or bullshit about the door then I wouldn't.

I'm not a shop.

GalloweesG · 14/10/2011 17:39

Caveat Emptor, or something like that.

Tell the cheeky sod to sell it on.

pictish · 14/10/2011 17:42

It's £200 for a buggy that is useless!!

All of you saying 'that's his problem' are hags of the highest order. I'm glad you're all so well off you could write off £200 as a silly mistake. I would be absolutely devastated to lose that amount.

If that were me, and you refused to refund, I would want to punch your selfish grabby lights out.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 14/10/2011 17:44

I think we've found the buyer :o

His mistake. Tough titty.

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 14/10/2011 17:45

well he can sell it on
