To not want to give this man his money back

I sold a buggy today, as seen h was happy with it and paid £200 which was cheap anyway. Twenty minutes later I got a text saying it doesn't fit through their front door and will I take it back.

I explained how to take the wheels off but no he is still saying it won't fit. I've already put the money in one of those pots you have to smash to get the money put of and feel a bit miffed I'm now going to have to smash it to take it out. But have I agreed reluctantly, I would be unreasonable not to take it back wouldn't I?! I still feel annoyed though

I wouldn't give it back either, nor would I ask for it back if I was the one who'd bought it. You wouldn't be mean if you refused, it's his responsibility to make sure it would fit through. If I'd been the one who'd made that mistake I'd either suck it up and take the wheels off or sell it on.

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 12:24

I haven't totally agreed, said I'd see if dp can get the money out the pot but I think I will, grudgingly.

YANBU

I would just tell him 'my husband says I'm not allowed to take the money back' stupid and sexist I know... but it will enable you to do a U-turn! Its his problem and think piglet is right in her suspicions.

You could always put your money in the bank - thats also quite safe. Unless using the jar is part of the fun for you.

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 12:26

Thing is karma wise yes it's good to, but, I wouldn't ddream of asking for money back fpr something that was my fault. Maybe I should say I'll buy it off of him for £150 Grin

AuntieMaggie · 14/10/2011 12:27

can you use tweezers to try and get the money out? though I don't think you should...

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 12:27

Oh yes I know I can use a bank but I save more this way as we are always bunging change in and the odd 20 etc whereas we wouldn't do that with the bank iyswim

"piglet is right in her suspicions"

Grin There's a clue in the name!

slavetofilofax · 14/10/2011 12:31

I would only offer to buy it back for £150.

You have to break your pot, you have spent time, and money listing the thing, and it's not your fault!

He can either accept that offer, or sell it on ebay himself.

ArtVandelay · 14/10/2011 12:33

Totally understand that. At my bank they have a coin sorter/counter that you can use yourself. The joy of feeding coins into a big clanky machine and then finding 6 or 7 euros made up of coppers from DS piggy bank! Fantastic.

Sorry John I have a man's name too but I am a lady, or at least female.

Hungrydragon · 14/10/2011 12:36

he really should have measured his door though. That's one of the things you take into consideration before buying a buggy.

If his door is too small to get a P&T in with the wheels of than whatever stroller he buys will probably have to be folded out side.

I'd probably refund as long as the product was ok but make it clear I thought he was being a chancer.

Hungrydragon · 14/10/2011 12:37

I am a lady, or at least female. [arf] [hgrin]

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 12:49

I love those sorters, we once used a pot full of coppers to pay for christmas food shop. Was brilliant

YANBU. You're not a business.

StuntCubble · 14/10/2011 12:57

Am seriously tempted to use arts excuse and blame dp. Is that awful? Will I have bad karma? A friend said I should have said I've spent the money but I'll gladly have it back and re sell and pass the money on to them Grin

OP posts:
FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 14/10/2011 13:03

he can fold it and take it through, you are NOT being mean to not want to refund him at all, it isn't faulty.

PicaK · 14/10/2011 13:07

This is not your responsibility.

Besides, you are only supposed to break terramundi pots when they are full. Sure it"s bad luck if you do so beforehand.

He can sell the pram himself.

neverputasockinatoaster · 14/10/2011 13:07

I don't think you should give the money back, he should have measured up!

However, you can lever the top off those pots if you put a knife in the money slot, so I was told by the lady in the shop I got DD's from, it lifts the top off, leaving a round hole and then you can stick the lid back on....

TiaMariaandDietCoke · 14/10/2011 13:08

Can't he just sell it on himself? Otherwise you'll be paying to readvertise due to his mistake. From what you've said he shouldn't have a problem selling it on again.

if you had a advert somewhere you may still get a few calls about it - you could offer to pass his number on to anyone who calls wanting to buy it?....

Salmotrutta · 14/10/2011 13:12

Totally agree that for a private sale like this it's caveat emptor.
It's a done deal and you are not responsible for their mistake.

I wouldn't give the money back - you don't have to legally. Even if it was faulty it would still be caveat emptor.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 14/10/2011 13:12

I'd give him the money back - reluctantly. Yes he 'should' have checked, but hindsight is always a wonderful thing. Someone mentioned karma earlier - it always catches you out.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/10/2011 13:14

Am I the only person that has never brought her pram/buggy into the house? Mine always stays in the car or the outside cupboard.

GHAHSTLYGHOULYpants · 14/10/2011 13:19

you can use a drill to make a hole in the bottom of the pots to get your money out leaving the pot intact and re-useable.

I would say--sorry mate, you bought it, you should have checked, not my problem anymore.

Whitecat · 14/10/2011 13:19

Turn it upside down, jiggle and use tweezers. I've done this before.

Balsam · 14/10/2011 13:32

Can't you write him a cheque? Or go and get another £200 cash out of the bank?

KatieMortician · 14/10/2011 13:40

I was going to say you would bu to give him the money back but having see those hideous pots I think smashing it would be doing you a favour tbh. Wink

Why not put your money in the bank? At least that way if it gets nicked by failing bank the financial services compensation scheme will pay you back.
