Went into Primark for first time today. Awful just awful. Full of cheap tat would rather shop at a jumble sale.

Squeaky - I am tallish (5'9"") and Primark are too short. So, we can deduce that their clothes are designed for someone between you and me. But who the fuck designs clothes for people who are 5' 4.5"?

CumpyGrunt · 09/10/2011 01:17

Wearing primarni pj bottoms that I bought for £4 Grin

I have a lovely new pacamac type thing that I got for £8.

I have recently discovered the fucking huge Primark in the middle of Glasgow.

babycham42 · 09/10/2011 01:20

Perhaps those of us at 5ft could send the excess 4.5" to our taller friends to be tacked on the bottom of their PJ's.
Everyone's a winner.Grin

perfumedlife · 09/10/2011 01:48

No, not too hot sqeaky, in fact, far less sweat inducing than slippers.

I'm 5'4 and they're still miles too long, think i'll belt them up with an old pair of tights and just give in to decrepitude in the style of my granny.

squeakytoy · 09/10/2011 01:54

oh I hate having hot feet.. perhaps its just me... I find myself legs up in the air, feet on the wall, just to cool them down... and I know its not the menopause cos I have had this issue for years! Grin.... I wear my Ugg flip flops all year long!

redexpat · 09/10/2011 03:15

PJs.
Tracksuit bottoms for wearing around the house.
Hold ups and tights.
I've always had a reasonable amount of luck with bras - small boobs.
DH got 3 pairs of jeans which fit him better than any others I've seen.

But any clothes that you want to be seen in, unlikely.

spiderslegs · 09/10/2011 03:49

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid

My friend made me go in once.

I was scared I might die from a massive build up of static charge.

hairymonkey · 09/10/2011 06:24

Love Primark, I think it's great that you can dress your children in clothes actually made by children, cute isn't it? Brilliant, as their little fingers can get into all the nooks and crannies of those pesky machines in the sweatshops, warms my heart almost as much as a yummy pair of fleecy jim jams.....

ColdSancerre · 09/10/2011 06:35

Took my niece shopping to London one Sunday a few weeks ago. She made me go to Primark on Oxford Street. I insisted on a glass of wine first to fortify me and it was still hell. I hope never to have to go again.

spiderslegs · 09/10/2011 06:38

HairyMonkey - you are quite right, third wrold children are most excellent at providing all of our needs.

And the best thing is, their mother's are benefiting from it too. The more children they have, the more they earn.

Really, everyone's a winner.

fluffythevampirestabber · 09/10/2011 06:43

I am a single parent. I am at uni. I have two girls.

Other than "cheap tat" places, where would you suggest I shop? I have to kit out a 9 year old and a just-about-to-be 13 year old and myself on the tightest of tight budgets.

If we go to Primark I can get fashionable bits that keep the 13 year old happy, a couple of new bits for the 9 year old (since she is hand me down sue) and I can get knickers/tights/and maybe a new jumper for myself.

Went to H&M yesterday and it was shoddily made rubbish as well AND the tights were £8 a pair. I'm not paying that for a pair of tights I'll pick them up in Primark for half that.

having said that I still hate the jumble sale aspect of it and have promised to take a bunch of DD1 and her mates to the nearest big city next Saturday for her birthday treat and she's already said she wants to do Primark. And Holister to look. Can you all please send gin

sunshineoutdoors · 09/10/2011 07:03

Have massively gone off Primark since the time I found a human poo in one of the changing rooms. Shop assistant said it wasn't the first time it had happened! I hope it was a child's poo (although that's still disgusting imo)

At the risk of sounding like a snob I feel I would be less likely to experience this in a slightly more upmarket shop.Smile

Pagwatch · 09/10/2011 07:05

If you have to use Primark or if you like it great.
But i hate it not least because some of the stuff they are selling is so cheap the antecedents cannot possibly be ethical. I don't like to think some 10 year old is working 10 hours a say so that I can boast about my bargain.

But I have also worked on jumble sales and they are scarier.

Pagwatch · 09/10/2011 07:06

Poo in the changing room?

fluffythevampirestabber · 09/10/2011 07:07

Yuk sunshinethat is disgusting.

Thing is I genuinely cannot afford to shop for DD's anywhere other than Primark/New Look/Peacocks.

I hate this kind of snobbery it makes me feel like I'm getting picked on for being poor and not able to shop in Boden. I can't even afford Marks and Sparks for myself.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 09/10/2011 07:36

Hmmm maybe I am a bit of a snob. Don't care not shopping there would rathe dress in a bin bag all day. Maybe for kids it makes sense to shop there as they might have outgrown the stuff before it falls to bits.
But for adults it makes more sense to me to buy something well made (not really expensive but yes more than Primark) and wear it longer than just one season.
Am off to hide in the kitchen for a bit.

fluffythevampirestabber · 09/10/2011 07:41

Whenshewasbad I have a very limited income. I cannot afford the outlay for expensive clothes for myself and sometimes just sometimes I want to wear something that looks half fashionable and isn't jeans and a jumper.

Yesterday I was in town and looking for a winter coat. M&S coats were well over £100. I do not have £100 to spend on myself - for that I need my entire wardrobe for the whole fucking year.

I did see a couple of nice coats in Primark and New Look but came home with one dress for myself that was £14.99 with 20% off. If I shopped in boden it wouldn't be £12 I'd be spending it would be £80 and for that I could kit me and the kids out in clothes from the cheaper places.

fluffythevampirestabber · 09/10/2011 07:46

I should add. The only reason I need a new winter coat is because the one I have is going into holes at the arm seams. Literally holes. It is at least 6 years old and is my only winter coat.

I do shop in charity shops but it isn't always cheaper than the cheap shops and since I live in a small town there isn't a great choice.

ThePosieParker · 09/10/2011 07:51

Awful place, poorly made and poorly cut clothes, never EVER shop in there.

Besides I think I'm the wrong shape for cheap clothes and I look awful.

fluffythevampirestabber · 09/10/2011 07:52

Ok so if Primark is the work of the very devil, and you have very very limited funds, where do you shop?

Pagwatch · 09/10/2011 07:55

Fluffy

If primark meets your needs then great.
That doesn't mean everyone else has to like it. Nor does it mean that anyone else is looking down on you.
I used to get my clothes from charity shops or I made them. Other people don't like looking in charity shops but I still love it.
Everyone is different.
That you chose to shop there does not mean no one else is allowed to have an opinion about it.
I don't like it. Oddly I like T K Maxx and new look. It's just opinions. It isn't personal

catwithflowers · 09/10/2011 07:58

Charity shops are the answer Wink. Nabbed myself a lovely Monsoon skirt in one of ours yesterday for 3.99 Smile

fluffythevampirestabber · 09/10/2011 07:58

I do go to TKMaxx but because I'm short any of their trousers are far too long and by the time I would pay to get them taken up they're too expensive.

I just hate on here that it's all "oh you're condemning poor children to working their fingers til they bleed by buying in Primark"

You know, lots of other companies use cheap labour abroad, yes Primark isn't great but you know it's all about budgets and choices for me - I'd rather buy organic free range chicken too but I can't afford it

fluffy, Asda has some nice coats ranging from 15 quid to about 30. Might have to go there myself after scouring the 10 local charity shops within 5 mins of my house Grin
