was reading some magazine in the dentist, there was a woman from dragons den iin the mag.
saying how she had a wardrode worth 3 million.

and she went onto say well i work hard for it.
so ideserve it.
and something todo with she sees her expensive clothes as a symbol of how sucessful she is.

really made me feel sick, how a horrible nasty attitude to have in life.

i'm sure even if i was a millionaire, i would not be proud about spending that much on clothes.

i don't know its just the arrogant im entitled to this that got me.
and dont they think people how have less also work hard. probably alot of them work alot harder

what do you think

And there certainly can be a correlation between working hard and having a lot of money. It is not necessarily the only factor but some people do become pretty wealthy through hard work alone.

I don't think everyone works equally hard though. The level of hard work required to start up her type of company in that industry and build it up over the years is beyond what I could personally manage or be interested in managing, even if I work hard in my own job.

I have friends who say to me 'I don't know how you do X or Y'? But, when questioned, they aren't actually prepared to work weekends, or late into the night or spend a significant portion of their otherwise free time dedicated to that task.

I feel sorry for people who work incredibly long hours on minimum wage jobs, but actually, I don't know many of these people any more, most of the mums I know work part-time/use tax credits/live on the husband's wage; the only people I know where both the men and women are working 16 hour days are immigrant families who are building businesses for the next generation (and fitting in childcare around that, they wouldn't see having a child as a reason not to work in the shop, for example, they would just childcare all day and work at night).

TLD2 · 06/10/2011 12:15

Her riches also enable her to give to charity and invest in new entrepreneurs, who are hoping that their hard work will give themi similar success.

Does that part of her attitude stink as well?

WolfShapedBullet · 06/10/2011 12:16

To the poster who mentioned her 'botox' if it is HD's facial looks you are referring to, she has actually suffered a dense stroke in the past causing a pronounced weakness on one side of her body.
I watched an interview with her discussing it, she had monthsof rehabilitation, but obviously that side of the body is still affected.

Fair play to her I say, we all have our indulgences but it's all relative.

Georgimama · 06/10/2011 12:18

yy to hardgoing's post.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 06/10/2011 12:20

Yanbu.

She should give all her money to me as penance.

CBA to read all the messages so sorry if repeating but ...

What exactly do you want her to do with the money? I thought the rich were supposed to spend their money. Trickle-down effect and all that.

northernrock · 06/10/2011 12:22

A lot of people work really hard. Nurses, cleaners, teachers, administrators..
They dont get paid a lot (most people in this country dont get paid a lot) but work just as hard as CEO's do.

Actually, people who brag about how hard they work, ime, often don't actually work that hard-that just want people to admire them, and people who brag about what their clothes cost are just embarrassingly vulgar.

slavetofilofax · 06/10/2011 12:22

How do you know she hasn't given a big donation to a children's hospice? Or some other equally worthy cause?

The country needs people like her to pay their massive tax bills, no one would get anything from the state if there weren't exceptionally high earners.

Hullygully · 06/10/2011 12:22

oh yes. that's always worked hasn't it? the good old trickle-down.

Hullygully · 06/10/2011 12:23

High earners don't pay tax here. That's the point of the caymans.

Hullygully · 06/10/2011 12:23

Do you have any idea how easy it is to avoid paying tax if you're wealthy?

I don't mean that rudely, but really.

toptramp · 06/10/2011 12:25

Well I think that Hilary and the other Dragons are good role models for our kids. Entrepeneurialism is just what this country needs.

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 06/10/2011 12:27

what ever you may think of her, sadly we do need people like her to employ, give to charity and yup spend money on clothes. At least she does give a lot to charity and I would have thought that the journo twisted to say the least as she doesn't seem that arrogant (she was more than happy to help someone in the Den with no investment iirc as it was something to do with physio post stroke/accident etc). In many respects I would prefer her to have the money than some twat who goes off shore for a tax dodge. But I do find 3 mill on clothes obsene

wannaBe · 06/10/2011 12:28

and I hate this attitude that debt is somehow other peoples' responsibility too.

So you maxed out your credit card on a wardrobe/holiday/gadgets you couldn't afford but "had to have" anyway, while struggling to pay off your 125% mortgage.

Yes, the ease with which it has been possible to borrow money is scary.

But no-one holds a gun to your head and makes you do it.

purits · 06/10/2011 12:28

LOL @ hully.

Hands up who on here has voluntarily paid more tax than they legally have to.

toptramp · 06/10/2011 12:29

I do agree though that carers, nurses and teachers need to be payed more but should be prepared to excel in those roles.

Peachy · 06/10/2011 12:29

Ah loads of people work hard for minimum wage

The nursery staff my sister managed, minimum wage, expected in at 7 and lucky to get away from her by six and they have to study as well

Dh doesn't even manage minimum wage half the time, but that;'s why he has chosen to do the start up whilst he has a study income- 16 hour days typical though, weekends as well

Just how it is

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 06/10/2011 12:29

hully I often think if the uber rich just paid the tax they would be better off than paying some weasly accountant to hide it somewhere - cos that can't be cheap Smile when you are that rich its just greedy to keep it all

OriginalGhoster · 06/10/2011 12:30

Magazines are a giant advert for consumerism, they are funded by advertising. An article inferring the idea that success and happiness depends on the value of your wardrobe is par for the course.

Next time your're at the dentist, just read the posters about gum disease and missed appointments instead.

If my happiness or success was related to the price of my clothes, I'd be bloody miserable.

And I'm not Grin

chandellina · 06/10/2011 12:31

i think the bigger problem is when people leave off the "I work hard" part and it just becomes "I deserve it."

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 06/10/2011 12:32

Have to say I was always horrified at the amount of money the bank would offer to me if I went in, infact the less I had in the bank the more they would offer which was always a red flag for me. But I am sensible Grin oh yes I am

Peachy · 06/10/2011 12:32

Yes toptramp although interestingly if you have many skills employers run away fast because you can't intimidate people with options.
